STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENTS CELEBRATED AT SPECIAL EVENING Last Tuesday, a celebration for a broad range of student successes took place in Kingston Theatre, as teachers, governors of the College, and even the Mayor of Surrey Heath, Cllr Robin Perry - as well as the Mayoress Jill Boxell - presented awards throughout the evening. Students were recognised for outstanding sporting achievements, their leadership skills, academic excellence and making outstanding progress in their learning; an audience of proud parents looked on. Students with at least two years or more of consecutive 100% attendance were also acknowledged; some students had not missed a single lesson in four years at Collingwood - a wonderful achievement.

Bake Off

A huge thank you to every student who took part in our very first European Day of Languages Bake Off. The judges and I were overwhelmed by the quality of the cakes that were brought in on Friday morning. The judges had a very difficult time deciding which cakes they liked best!

After much deliberation they agreed on the following for taste and appearance:

FROM THE PRINCIPAL European Day of Languages Well done to the MFL Department for an amazing European Day of Languages last week with some very exciting activities for students and staff. Staff, students and prospective parents of Year 6 students touring the College were all very impressed by the excellent displays in Q corridor and the LRC. There was a fantastic response to the Bake Off task based on this theme and it was a very difficult decision to decide on a winner. I very much enjoyed being part of the team that sampled all 33 cake entries! Academic Review Many thanks to all those parents and carers who attended the Academic Review meetings last Wednesday. As usual we have received some very positive comments regarding this event and hope that the discussions held with form tutors and mentors, and the targets set will help students continue to make progress. Open Evening A reminder that the College will have an early closure this Thursday to help us prepare for our Open Evening. So far we have had some very busy daily tours with some incredibly positive feedback on our staff, students and site! The Open Evening gives us a further opportunity to talk to prospective parents about what Collingwood has to offer and why our first choice preferences continue to increase!

Red Carpet Event I was delighted to welcome the PiXL Edge students to the Red Carpet event this morning. These students are following a nationally recognised award in Character Education and Leadership. They are all involved in organising and leading on a wide range of events and activities in the College and are superb ambassadors for us in activities that involve the local community. The Leadership potential in this group is just amazing and this morning’s event was a good opportunity to acknowledge the fantastic work they are doing! A full list of our PiXL Edge students can be found on the next page.

Attendance Strategy You will receive an email today that details your child’s attendance since the start of term and we would ask that you discuss this with them. This will be a regular email to you as part of our attendance strategy and we hope that you will be able to support us in emphasising the importance of regular attendance and that ‘every lesson and day’ counts.

STUDENTS’ ACHIEVEMENTS CELEBRATED AT SPECIAL EVENING

Older students who had made an outstanding contribution to the life of the College, as well as those showing great fortitude and resilience in overcoming difficulties, were also celebrated.

The Head Girl at Collingwood, Millicent Brodie Cooper, and Deputy Head Girl, Darci Goulty, were Masters of Ceremony for the evening. They were also joined by our newly appointed KS4 Head Girl and Boy, Elizabeth Walker and Dylan Wright, who presented two of the awards on the evening.

The awards were interspersed with some outstanding student reports, which covered many of the exciting events from 2018-19 such as, the expedition to Vietnam and Cambodia and the Year 9 Football Team. We also had an excellent performance from a selection of the We Will Rock You cast accompanied by Jake Pang on the piano.

Our pride for all of our students’ success is key in the College community and ethos, and we were delighted to be able to celebrate this formally and publicly.

The Modern Foreign Languages Department is looking for French, Spanish and Italian native speakers to help our students develop their speaking skills. If you are interested in helping our students and can spare a

few hours every week or every other week please get in touch, it will be greatly appreciated. The Department is also looking for members of the local community who use a foreign language in their current job and would be willing to come and talk to our students about the importance of learning a foreign language. We would like to congratulate all students and staff who participated and helped make the language taster sessions a big success. People enjoyed practising a wide range of languages: Russian, Arabic, Mandarin, Polish, Punjabi and Urdu. Everyone made a great effort to help us celebrate language diversity here at College. Equally, Year 7 students have created some acrostic poems to celebrate the European Day of Languages and we are happy to say there are some very creative and high quality poems that will be rewarded during the following week. Many thanks to all the form groups that completed the languages quiz last week and sent their scores. Languages are the link to all nations. Last week in the Library we recognised the importance of speaking several languages. We gave our students the opportunity to celebrate the richness and the diversity of European languages.

All week long students enjoyed varied activities including games, puzzles and quizzes with a special treat on Wednesday when we put out a delicious table of biscuits from around Europe for students to enjoy at break time and lunch time! Many students earned some extra praise points by completing our ‘how to say hello in 12 different languages’ quiz.

This week recommended reads: Why not have fun and take a look at our book written in a European language?

Even if you can’t read a whole book, sometimes it is just as much fun to try and match part of the original book with the translation, or translate the title or find new foreign words. On Thursday 3 October, we are celebrating ...

We will have several activities lined up, including ‘Paint a Poem’.

Overdue Books/DVDs

Any parents who have received letters or telephone calls about overdue books or DVDs, please return the items to either the Library or any one of the reception areas (marked for the attention of Ms S Blay) as soon as possible. If there is an issue with returning these items please contact me between 12.00pm and 4.00pm Monday to Friday on 01276 457600 extension 427 to discuss.

At the start of each academic year the Art Department organises trips which support students’ coursework for GCSE. This term, Years 9 and 10 GCSE Art, Craft and Design students visited the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, London.

Students had an enjoyable day taking photographs to record valuable primary research for their Natural Forms coursework unit.

They visited the Shirley Sherwood and Marianne North Galleries, the Temperate House, the Palm House and the Princess of Wales Conservatory, where a few students spotted one of the resident Chinese water dragons. Students also had the opportunity to visit The Hive, an impressive multi-sensory installation designed by Wolfgang Buttress. He drew inspiration for the latticed structure from Dr Martin Bencsik’s research into bee vibrations and communication patterns. Hundreds of LED lights on the structure glowed and a unique soundtrack hummed and buzzed around us in response to the real-time activity of a beehive at Kew. The highlight of the day was the opportunity to photograph several beautiful sculptures around the gardens as part of Dale Chihuly’s Reflections on Nature exhibition. We now look forward to seeing the work generated from our visit.
