FROM THE CO-PRINCIPALS Staff Leavers We would like to thank all those staff leaving Collingwood for their hard work, commitment and support and wish them well in the next steps of their career or retirement. We would like to pay a special tribute to Jan Eaton, who many of you will know has been a teacher at Collingwood for a magnificent 38 years. This was her first teaching appointment back in September 1978 and she only intended staying for 3 years! Generations of students and staff have benefitted from her teaching, Senior Leadership team responsibilities and, of course, organising all of the College’s special events over the years such as the London Olympic 2012 event, the World War 1 Commemorative Day and the recent Somme event. Her contribution to Collingwood has been immense! Jan has had an extremely successful career with us and we are pleased to say that parents will still see her in Collingwood on occasions next year as she is going on to work with us and other local schools as a specialist educational consultant. We wish Jan all the very best for the future and thank her for her commitment to Collingwood over the past 38 years.

We are pleased to inform parents that despite the serious teacher shortage we have successfully recruited a number of high quality staff and that we are fully staffed for September. CONTINUE ON PAGE 3

Restructuring

As you will no doubt be aware schools are under extreme financial pressure at the moment due to a series of cuts in the public sector and considerable increases in staff costs. We have taken strong proactive measures to ensure a balanced budget for next year. We have made savings through a management restructure across the College but this has unfortunately necessitated the removal of some support staff posts. This has not been an easy process but we are confident that the College will continue to move forward under the new structure. Natural turnover from teaching staff has meant that there are no teaching staff redundancies. The management restructure has merged the Heads of Faculty positions with the Senior Leadership Team. The role of Sixth Form Year Manager has been replaced by a KS5 Curriculum Leader. There have also been a number of departmental changes which will be detailed early next term. Whilst we have succeeded in balancing the books for 2016/2017, we are concerned that the financial situation for all schools will be even more challenging whilst we wait for the outcome of the National Funding Formula. Since the demise of the Collingwood College Association (CCA), we have looked at various ways we could replace the valuable support that a parents’ association can provide to Collingwood. We are very conscious that parents have less time available to attend and support traditional fundraising activities once their children reach secondary school. In order to continue to provide a rich and broad range of extended educational activities it is essential to enlist the financial support of parents. This support is increasingly needed to support curriculum activities which can no longer be afforded from our diminishing income as well to enhance a wide range of enriching experiences. Parents will remember that we had to replace one of our ageing minibuses this year. The minibus is constantly used by a wide range of departments to take students to competitions, activities, sports fixtures etc. In discussions with parents, it has been suggested that we should ask for regular contributions to the College Fund rather than making an annual request. We know that some parents are unable to make significant contributions but if we can encourage everyone to contribute at an appropriate level, we can enrich the education available for all students. Our initial thoughts were to ask parents to set up a termly standing order rather than a one off payment in the Autumn term. We are happy to receive feedback on this issue but it is our opinion that most parents would prefer this option to alternative fundraising events. Unfortunately, in future, there may also be a small charge to cover the costs of activities that have previously been freely available. Thank you

We would like to thank all parents and carers for their continued support throughout this academic year and trust that you all have a healthy, enjoyable and sun-filled summer break!

CHINESE STUDENTS VISIT COLLINGWOOD

During their visit on Tuesday the students of Jiangning School were paired up with students from Collingwood and were able to take part in a Food Technology lesson where they baked cupcakes. We are very grateful to Mrs Marshall who worked tirelessly to ensure all the students understood how to make them. This was no easy task as many did not possess the English skills to understand some of the more technical terms, but with the help of Mrs Marshall, their teachers and their Collingwood partners they were able to take away some amazing cakes! The Jiangning students also had a tour of Collingwood and were particularly impressed by all our facilities, especially in the Technology Department, where they were able to view the latest Status Racing car.

The staff and students were also impressed by the way Collingwood students learn and take a lead role in their learning, during the lessons seen. Having experienced lessons in Chinese schools this is a very different approach to what they are used to.

In the next Countdown to China meeting we will be looking at some of the differences between Chinese life and education, which will help us retain our International Schools Award. Collingwood College has developed close links with our Chinese friends at Jiangning School over the last 6 years. We look forward to our visit to Jiangning in October 2016. During our previous visits we have experienced Chinese cooking, Maths lessons, calligraphy, tea making and origami lessons so are excited to see what new skills we can learn on our next visit! We are grateful to the following students who met and played hosts to the students from Jiangning while they were with us:

Francesca Abeelack, Grace Austin, Aimee Conway, Imogen Cook, Sally Jardine, Mia Jones, Jessica Long, Semima Nembang, Neha Rai, Rebecca Stevens, Madeline Stevens, Lily Thornhill, Jamie To, Charlotte Turland and Matthew Collard. I am also grateful to Mrs Jones and Mrs Marshall without whom the visit would not have been such a success. Many friendships were formed on Tuesday, despite the language barrier. We look forward to continuing our bond of friendship with the staff and students at Jiangning School in October 2016, and over future visits to China.

YEAR 6 PUPILS GET A FLAVOUR OF COLLINGWOOD The Year 6 pupils came to Collingwood for two very successful Induction Days on 5 and 6 July. There was much excitement and nervous anticipation on the first morning in Kingston Theatre but after putting the pupils into their new Tutor Groups there were lots of happy faces and smiles. Over the two days the Year 6 pupils had four lessons including an English, Maths and Science lesson, a tour of the College and a lesson with a Form Tutor getting to know each other in their new Tutor Groups. They quickly realised the benefits of coming to a bigger school when they got to experience "exciting things like making rainbows in Science." The Science labs were a real hit with the pupils who hadn't experienced practical Science lessons in a laboratory before, which made it more interesting and enjoyable for them.

Over the two days Year 6 began to realise the opportunities that coming to a big school like Collingwood can offer with all the trips and clubs on offer to them. In Geography, they got to learn about Wimbledon and why the top-seeded players come from the richer countries in the world. The students’ enthusiasm and knowledge of countries and their flags very much impressed the Geography teaching staff and Year 6 are very much looking forward to experiencing a "wider range of subjects being taught by nice and friendly teachers who challenge you", when they start in September.

One of the highlights of the two days is always lunchtime, where they choose what they want for lunch from a wide range of exciting foods and drinks on offer, and relax with new friends on the playground. By the end of the two days, Year 6 had made lots of new friends and enjoyed meeting other students from different schools in their new Tutor Groups. They really began to settle into life at Collingwood with the help and support of our enthusiastic Year 11 students who came back to support the students over the two days. The Year 6 pupils can't wait for September and wanted to make the Induction Days longer with a chance to experience more lessons.

YEAR 12 STUDENT WINS ANIMATION AWARD

Since 2007, the University of Manchester has been running the annual UK Schools Computer Animation Competition. It is all about enthusing school children about Computer Science, and to use computers creatively. Students aged 7-19 at UK schools and colleges can enter, and entry is free. Entries can be from individuals or from small teams but all entrants are expected to create an original key-frame computer animation, up to one minute in length, using eligible software. We are very pleased that one of the school entrants this year, Year 12 student Malgorzata Skornia, won the Key Stage 5 Individual Award (Highly Commended), for her super film ‘Procrastination’. It is a fantastic achievement. The animation can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqMGooBQ-rY This follows on from last year’s entry by Paul Finnis where he won Key Stage 5, Individual Runner up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3vmEQO51pE&list=PLa7KNPJTHIrXvI9Ujwxstx-WW3pGkFfC9

YEAR 10 ART AND PHOTOGRAPHY STUDENTS VISIT SCULPTURE PARK

For the recent Enterprise Days we took the Year 10 Art and Photography students to The Sculpture Park in the pretty village of Churt, near Farnham. There are 700 works of varying themes and construction, nestled within ten acres of beautiful Surrey woodland.

Our students spent two glorious days taking outstanding photos and sketching. They were amazed by the imaginative sculptures that fill this stunning site their favourite sculptures. The Year 10 GCSE students conduct was superb and they thoroughly enjoyed the day. The department was delighted by the way the students recorded the sculptures through some fantastic photographs and sketches. Everyone agreed that this was an inspirational trip and we hope to return again next year. We also recommend this fantastic sculpture park to anyone who wants a great day out.

Mrs Witt - Head of Art Department

The Sculpture Park trip was useful for our structure project in Art. It was great to take interesting photos and do drawing in different styles. It inspired us to use more techniques and improved our sketchbooks. Emma Freeman

The trip allowed us to collect lots of photos which will enable us to study structures for our new project. In addition it was a nice day out with friends. Kitty McKee

The trip was actually alright, I loved the dragon which was made out of wood. It’s given me lots of ideas for my new project. Jordan Coles

It was a pleasure to assist the Year 10’s at the Sculpture Park. They were incredibly well behaved, respectful and did the College proud. Overall, a great opportunity to view and study some amazing sculptures within the most tranquil setting. Miss Day (LSA)

SUCCESS AT THE KEY STAGE 3 SHAPE SPELLING BEE

On Thursday 14 July Collingwood’s Year 7 Spelling Team: Owen Moore, Sam Scruby, Lana Willing, Emily Welsh, Megan Jones and Kathryn Rea succeeded in winning the SHAPE Spelling Bee Trophy! They beat Years 7 and 8 teams from King's International and Tomlinscote in order to secure their victory. Their achievement is vast as the other teams were amazingly prepared and talented with their spelling. Just a sample of some of the words tested on - phenomenon, loquacious, terrestrial, intangible! A special mention goes to Owen Moore who was the last Year 7 standing out of all teams during the main spelling event and only narrowly missed out on being the last competitor in this event too. I am also exceptionally proud of the Year 8 team: Lauren Coles, Hannah Boast, Luke Bennett and Daniel Williams; who despite only having four members made an exceptional effort and managed to hold their ground against some rather fierce competition. It seems we'll be hosting the event next year and I am hopeful we'll be able to keep this hard-won trophy just a little longer! Thank you to all the members of staff who supported and assisted the two teams at this event.
