COLLINGWOOD SPORTS LEADERS INSPIRE THE FUTURE

Another highlight for us was looking after a troop of elephants which included mother, baby and two adopted aunts - Pin, Pun, Kaew Petch and Laong Dao. We enjoyed hand feeding the elephants banana balls, made from bananas, bran and pellets. We also filled their enclosure with salad (a bamboo chip and molasses mix), enrichments (bamboo logs, tyres and wraps filled with fruit) and in the evenings got to wash and walk the elephants, which was a truly magical experience. Every day we were challenged with special projects, one of which was clearing a lake so that gibbons could inhabit islands that the water surrounded. Gibbons can’t swim and if a lake is densely populated with lilies, they attempt to run across them and consequently drown. Hence the importance of the activity. By the end of our trip we had made two islands habitable, thereby providing the centre with more space for gibbons in the future. We really loved the experience, not only because of the animals but also the people we met. There was a great sense of comradery throughout the sanctuary and this helped motivate us throughout the two weeks to work

with our friends and achieve something for the animals. Also, it was a great morale booster to see so many dogs and cats running around the sanctuary. WFFT rescues all animals and over the years has accumulated 17 dogs and 5 cats, some who are blind, deaf and have serious health conditions. They were a great comfort throughout our time abroad.

Overall, we really enjoyed our trip to Thailand. Although the experience challenged us both physically and emotionally we have learnt a lot about ourselves and what we can achieve. We would encourage anyone to take up the opportunity of participating in the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

YEAR 8 STUDENT SHORTLISTED FOR ‘YOUNG COMMENTATOR OF THE YEAR’ Freddie Price (8G) recently entered the BBC Young Commentator of the Year; a nationwide competition for budding sports commentators aged between 11 and 15. Freddie chose to commentate on a football match between Manchester City and Everton. Being a City fan himself, his enthusiasm was genuine as he described, in flowing detail, the goal that gave City a 3-0 lead. Freddie’s entry has now been shortlisted for the final 15, so a clip will be played live on air on BBC Radio 5 Live between 7.30am and 8.00am on Thursday 22 November. Fingers crossed for the announcement of the winner live on air on BBC Radio 5 Live at 7.00pm on Sunday 25 November. Good luck Freddie!

Please see a selection of our new DVDs here. Overdue Library Books Please can we ask parents that if they have received a letter or telephone call regarding an overdue library book(s) to encourage their son or daughter to return it to the Library as soon as possible. If the book has been lost then it needs to be paid for via ParentPay under ‘Replacement Library Book’. If there is an issue with the student returning a library book/item please speak to Ms Blay or Mrs Teissonniere.

Following on from the WW1 Centenary special events on Friday 9 November, we are delighted that we have been sent a copy of Peter Jackson’s film ‘They Shall Not Grow Old’. This extraordinary new film brings the war back to life, using new technology to render this century old footage in HD colour. This is a ground breaking film which contains original World War 1 film footage.

We are proposing a screening of this in Kingston Theatre on Monday 10 December at 3.30pm. This will be open to all students aged 15 and above and all staff too. The event will be free of charge although we recommend bringing a small donation with you on the evening for the British Legion.

Seats will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
