Walking and TalkingWhat did you think of Eastman Dental Center?“I am very impressed. I didn’t know

the Center was as internationally richas it is; nor did I know it was strictly apostdoctoral institution. I’ve met manyhere who care deeply about dental edu-cation. I was especially touched by theclose relations professors and graduatesshare and the strength of communityhere. This is my tenth graduation thisyear, and I’ve seen more warmth herethan I have at most institutions.

I’m also very impressed with the quality of the teaching and research and how you’re develop-ing and preparing lead-ers who care. That’s so important with thecritical health careissues we face today.”

Convocation

You are among the most privilegedgroup in the world. Some of you areAmericans and some of you are fromother countries in the world. I want youto take a moment and savor this hour.Just take the time to feel good aboutbeing here tonight. The fact is that usually when you accomplish things, before you even know it, we are at thenext level. What I’m going to be....whatcomes next...all the issues involving family and we rarely take the time toreflect on what it took to get here and to appreciate this moment.

The reason it’s important to do that, although this is a good moment, everymoment won’t be a good moment. Yourfamilies know this and you know this.Sometimes when you take a momentand think about this special feeling...all of your family members who helped youget here, the professors who helped you,you will find that in the difficult times, this memory can sustain you.

I often talk about growing up in theDeep South and I work in Baltimore. I grew up in Birmingham and when people talk about the Deep South, theyalways talk about the importance of stories. When I grew up there weretwo things I loved doing...solving mathproblems and eating food. My motherwas always trying to get me to loseweight but my grandmother loved myfat cheeks.

My grandmother would make twoblueberry pies for the family, one for thefamily and one for Freeman. And, shewould put my name on it and it wouldmake me feel so special. My motherwould be upset with my grandmotherbut my grandmother would just sit there watching me eat piece after piece of thatblueberry pie. I can still taste that pie

today and when I’m depressed some-times, I think about that blueberry pieand I just savor the moment. So, takethis as your blueberry pie and savor it!

My second point...I want you toknow your story. Each of you has astory that consists of everything thathas happened in not only your life butalso the things that happened to yourparents and grandparents....all thethings that made you who you aretoday. Regardless of where you are inthe world, there is a story there and stories inspire...stories inspire us all.I have a sister-in-law who is a dentist innorthern Virginia and we’ve comparedstories about dentists. We live in aworld in which people have two typesof thoughts about dentists. Most peoplethink in the cosmetic range and every-body talks about white teeth, but at thesame time there are all kinds of healthissues involved. Usually, people onlythink about dentists when...there ispain. Then you think about your den-tist! One of the challenges we have isthat people don’t think prevention.

I was very fortunate when I was ayoung boy, I had a wonderful dentistwho was broadly educated, and I’ll tellyou what he did that was so fascinating. When I would come to his office, hewould always ask me a question thatwould make me think about my val-ues... my life....and my future. Whilehe worked on me, he wanted me to bethinking about the question. And, whenwe finished, we’d talk a few minutes. He had an enormous impact on mebecause he taught me to have thepatience to reflect. So, when I thinkabout a dentist’s chair, I think aboutreflection. It also helped me stop think-ing about the pain, quite frankly...but hiswas a wonderful approach.

In contrast, my wife grew up in a little town in Virginia. Unfortunately, there were no dentists of color, and theone white dentist in town would onlypull black children’s teeth. He was not anice man and it was an awful experi-ence. My wife’s baby sister said, “Iwant to have a life different than that. I want to become a dentist so I can tellall kinds of kids that they are special.”She became a dentist and she loveswhat she does.

Those are two stories....but thestory of that little girl seeing a dentistwho was not nice inspired her to wantto make a difference. That storyinspires me because it says what’s possi-ble. Here’s the point for you. You areat the top of your game. You are theleaders of this country and in the world. The challenge that we face is that toooften people don’t really understand thesignificance of your work other thanwhen they’re having some pain. Thefact is, as the Surgeon General said, when you talk about craniofacial tissue, you are talking about humanity. This is the nobility of your work.

When talking about speaking, smil-ing, kissing, crying out for pain, and protecting against microbial infections...from the biological side of things tohuman interaction, you have the oppor-tunity to help people to be the best theycan be as human beings. Therefore, Iwould challenge you, as leaders, toremember that of those to whom much is given, much is required.

You are in the top 1% of the citizensof the world. If you were in undergrad-uate dental programs, you’d still be inthe top 4-5%. But at your level now,you are in the top 1% graduating fromone of the finest universities in theworld...great emphasis...all of this

advanced training...and the question isthis...what will you do to change theworld? What will you do beyond simplymaking a good living?

Here’s the challenge. Whetheryou go to an underdeveloped country orwhether you are in America, you willfind large numbers of poor people. Oneof the things that is significant aboutEDC is that it does reach out. Thequestion for you is what will you do tokeep learning, growing, and developing?

There’s so much more to learn. Notso much about the science of it all butabout human nature, about how youcan make that difference. So my chal-lenge here tonight is to consider thepossibilities. Now is the time to askwhat is possible. You’re at the top ofyour game...you are leaders in theworld, so be the best you can be. Youare in the top 1% of the people in theworld and have graduated from thefinest University in the world.

Ask yourself...what will you do to change the world...this world thatcontains such large numbers of poorpeople....what will YOU do? I challengeyou to consider the possibilities. Whenyou set off to change the world remem-ber to enjoy your family, remember thismoment, know your story, and knowthat you will be a leader.

This is the final thing to remember ...watch your thoughts forthey become your words. Watch yourwords for they become your actions.Watch your actions they become yourhabits. Watch your habits because they become your character. Watch your character for that becomes...your destiny.

Savor the moment!

e’ve had an eventful six months since the last issue of Momentum and this one is full

of good news about Dentistry’s people, pro-grams, and events, with a special focus on our upcomingAll Alumni Reunion 2007.

Alumni CommunicationWe are using technology to reach out to our graduates

including the use of e-mail blasts to share the latest newsand events. Alumni can keep in touch with each other on-line by registering with the Alumni Network athttp://www.alumniconnections.com/URMC/.

We’ll be designing a new look for our Website this summer and hope you’ll feelfree to comment on how it meets your informational needs. The Web is an ever-changing medium and the information on our site grows on a weekly basis. All of our recruitment materials are now available on the site. You can meet the EastmanDental Foundation Board with the new link on the home page and reconnect withyour fellow alumni under the Alumni and Friends segment.

All Alumni Reunion 2007The reunion planning has skyrocketed with a few months until the event, which

takes place on November 7-11. A large number of our alumni and faculty will be presenting scientific programs throughout the four-day reunion. Topics range from an “Update of Radiological Techniques to Better Detect Caries” to “The Da VinciCode in Orthodontics: Principles and Applications.” In addition, there will be a session on “Gene Therapy” and one on “Traumatic Dental Injuries.” You’ll find a registration form and schedule in this issue and on the Web athttp://www.urmc.rochester.edu/dentistry/reunion

Each of the program areas has planned interesting and informative sessions fortheir alumni. You’ll find all the information along with an on-line registration on theDentistry Website. I hope all will plan on joining us for a great time of learning andreconnecting with colleagues. The faculty and I are looking forward to seeing all ofyou at the Sanibel Resort and Spa in Fort Myers, Florida.

Feasibility StudyExploring the feasibility of establishing a small undergraduate dental program at

the University has been halted for now. The Medical Center is involved in a strategicplanning process and Dentistry will identify and prioritize additional strategies andtactics for the development of translational research and training for academic leader-ship. When the planning process is complete, we look forward to the opportunity ofthe post-merger review of UR Dentistry by an external advisory group of nationallyrecognized experts.

Alumni and Faculty NewsIt is always a delight to see our alumni and faculty garnering awards and honors

because it shows that we offer one of the country’s foremost academic and researchenvironments. A number of the honors are in the research field and one of ourvisions for the institution is to be renown in the basic and translational research withthe Center for Oral Biology. Congratulations to all our alumni and faculty for raisingthe bar and heightening our reputation in the research field.

Physical PlantWe recently developed a NYS HEAL proposal in conjunction with the other four

New York State Dental Academic Centers (NYSDAC) that are the State’s oral healthsafety net. EDC’s portion includes a plan to redesign the atrium so we can respondto our ever-increasing patient numbers and needs. The Center was designed in the70s to handle 30,000 to 40,000 patient visits a year. We are now providing 90,000visits a year and the need continues to grow.

The design includes a Critical Care Center in the atrium to treat the 45-55 emer-gency patients who arrive on a daily basis. Because of the building’s age, there aremajor infrastructure needs that must be met before we can begin any work on theatrium or the clinics. We’ll keep you updated regarding the status of the proposal.

Before closingIt is important to recognize the people who make our organization grow and

flourish. Thank you to our donors whose gifts support the additional initiatives insupport of our patient care, education, and research. We owe a debt of gratitude to our faculty for the long hours spent teaching, mentoring, and being life coaches.Thank you to our staff who do everything from cleaning teeth and sterilizing equip-ment to scheduling patients and keeping the building up and running. This includeseveryone from the administrators, secretaries, and billing clerks, to the library staff, housekeepers, and appointment schedulers.

We are more than just bricks and mortar…we are the ones who carry on theEastman Legacy to care for the underserved and especially the children.

My best wishes to you,

Cyril MeyerowitzProfessor and Chair, Eastman Department of DentistryDirector, Eastman Dental Center

Wfree, nongovernmental dental pro-gram has blossomed in the absence

of proper health-care centers for CostaRica’s indigenous,” said New York den-tist and founder of Project Talamanca,Dr. Peter Aborn, Prostho ‘76.

Shiroles, Talamanca is in theCaribbean region and there are no oralhealth care options in the area. Dr.Aborn was part of a four-day care proj-ect that provided fillings and restorativework for about 250 area people.

Dr. Aborn hopes to have a fullyequipped health center in the area inthe next year. Patients walked five and

six days to get treatment. Talamanca is an area that offers better access tosugar than toothbrushes and trips tothe dentist.

In 2005, Dr. Aborn, who has a private practice and teaches at theUniversidad Latina, of Panama, gath-ered some students and colleagues tolaunch a series of dental visits to theTalamanca Indigenous Reserve. Hesaid, “We want to give the people abasic service that all people deserve.”

From A 50th Medallion RecipientColin Watson, BDS, Dip AdBetty Watson, BDSAustralia

Betty and I were pleased to receive your invitation to attend the Eastman 50th MedallionCeremony. Sadly, however, for health reasons, we are no longer able to travel and are unable toaccept your kind invitation.

We both greatly enjoyed our stay inRochester and benefited from it. On return toAustralia, we did our best in the traditions ofservice we learned at Eastman. Betty firstworked for a while at the Australian NationalUniversity and then with the ACT School DentalService. My own career involved instigating theprovision of Fluoridation into the water suppliesin our area, the first in Australia. I was alsoinvolved in the management and tutoring for the Dental Assistants Training Course atCanberra’s TAFE and was a member of theACT Dental Board for many years.

We have maintained contact with many friends made while in Rochester and were pleased to learn how well Eastman is currentlymanaging.

We wish Eastman well for its Ceremony and future.

E-mail #2 Thank you so much for gettingback to me. I’m the hygienist in the picture abovethe heading “Dental Hygiene in the 50’s.” Dr.Bibby was the director of the Eastman school atthat time. If you want more info, do not hesitateto contact me.

E-mail #3 Ms Kettell, I think the patient inthe chair is Diane Basage (DeRoos) and the internis Ian McKey. Diane is the one who contacted meabout the picture and she is the one who told mewho the Dr. is. I have some fun pictures of someof my classmates and of course of my class. I stillhave my cap and some of the teeth we had tocarve out of Ivory soap. I often take these thingsto show my students at our college here in Tulsaand they get a big kick out of comparing today tothe “olden days” of Dental Hygiene school.

Thank you so much for your interest.

Ladies and gentlemen,

t’s hard to believe that I am standing in front of you to make a speech like

this. It means that it’s my turn and I amabout to leave the program. How fastthe time is! I have to say that the daysin the program were absolutely nothingbut wonderful.

Thank you all, for what I am now. I am a witness of myself and I have totestify what has happened to me forlast three years.

Every year, when the Brewer con-ference comes to date, I remember my

father the most. One day when I wasin my first year, I was working veryhard in the lab after midnight and itwas the very night before my firstBrewer. As soon as I came back home,I got the phone call from my family inKorea and they informed me that myfather has passed away. I had to packright away and several hours later, Iwas on the plane heading for his funeral. That’s why this is my secondBrewer, not the third one.

He was always very proud of meand he was even happier when I gotaccepted by this program. If he hadbeen alive, he must have been a personwho is more proud of me and happierabout my graduation than anybodyelse. He was a diligent man for all hislife. If you think I am diligent, it shouldbe attributed to him. If you think I amkind and gentle, it’s because of mymother. If you think I am matured, it’sbecause of my wife and two angels

between us. If you think I am a

good clinician, it’s because I was taught from the best teachers.

Thank you, Dr. Graser, Dr. Ercoli,Dr. Oster, Dr. Soltys, Dr. Tallents, Dr.Abt, Dr. Hofstede, Dr. Mozrall, Dr.Jarvis, Dr. Samburski, and many otherdoctors who taught me. If I claimmyself a prosthodontist, it’s because of your excellent education.

Thank you, Mike and the Hagan’sfamily for your support with the won-derful lab works.

Thank you, alumni. With your support, I was able to precede myresearch project, and I was able to have trips to nation-wide conferencesto present my case.

I remember myself when I came to U.S three years ago. I was merely a humble student. Now look at me and all my achievement of those threeyears. All of them must be attributedto you. Again, look at me. You arewatching your great masterpiece thatwas being made for three years.

Thank you very much and may Godbless you. God bless your family. Godbless Eastman Prostho program. AndGod bless this country. Thank youagain. Thank you very much.

Dr. Carlo Ercoli’sDinner Remarks

“I want you toknow how we usefunds from our alumni. Last year we actually sent twoof our third-year residents to threemeetings. Alumnifunds partially sup-port them and that’sthanks to you. Thathelps make our pro-gram visible at thenational level. Wealso can afford a fewthings for the resi-dents that otherwisewe wouldn’t have.

Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart.”

Renaissance supports DentistryDentistry at UR would like to acknowledge RHSC for their

support of dental education by way of their contribution to theHandelman Fellowship Fund. The Handelman Fund is over halfway to completion of its goal of $500,000. The purpose of thefund is to help educate future leaders in dentistry.

“We are dedicated to promoting good oral health, and ensuringthat our members have access to quality dental care is among ourhighest priorities. Supporting dental education through programslike Dentistry at the University of Rochester is a reflection of theRenaissance mission and one way that we are able to give back to the communities we serve.”

The Pension Protection Act of 2006

A special opportunity for individuals who are 70 1/2 or older in 2007Dentistry at the University of Rochester

he federal government has briefly opened a window that may present an option for you to make a special gift to the University that has opened

doors for so many.

The Pension Protection Act of 2006The Pension Protection Act of 2006 provides a significant opportunity for individ-uals over the age of 70 1/2 to make direct tax-free distributions to Dentistry atthe University of Rochester from their IRAs without having to include thoseamounts in adjusted gross income. The transfer “counts” toward meeting theminimum required distribution for the calendar year and can be easily completed. While there is no charitable income tax deduction allowed because the giftedassets are tax deferred, many took advantage of this opportunity in 2006.

Gifts from an IRA simplifiedPreviously, if you wanted to use IRA funds for a charitable contribution, you hadto make a taxable withdrawal from your IRA and then contribute it. The amountyou withdrew was taxable, and the deduction for the contribution may or maynot have offset the tax.

The new law presents a short-term opportunity to make a tax-free contribution by December 31, 2007.

Certain guidelines apply to these non-taxable charitable distributions from an IRA:■ They cannot exceed $100,000 per year ■ They must be made to a public charity (not a private foundation), and they

cannot be to a supporting organization or a donor advised fund ■ The gifts must be outright; for instance, they cannot be used to establish a

gift annuity or fund a charitable remainder trust ■ They can be used to make a gift to the Dentistry Annual Funds or to

endowment ■ These tax-free distributions can be made only through December 31, 2007

unless extended by Congress

You should consult your personal financial advisor about the applicability to your situation of the legal principles contained herein.

“B eing able to shadow helps me see the goal; shadowing helps

me see what I’m working toward.”When Elizabeth Kaminsky graduatesfrom the University of Rochester, shewill have a BA degree with a concen-tration in the area of brain and cogni-tive psychology and neuroscience, along with a business certificate and a minor in AmericanSign Language.Kaminsky will spendtime at the Universityof Melbourne,Australia and thenreturn to the UR.

As part of hershadowing program,Kaminsky also spenta day with a specialistat Rochester GeneralHospital that dealtwith infectious dis-eases. Shefound thattopic tobe

very interesting. She also spent a daywith a neurologist at Highland Hospitaland found that an interesting specialtybut felt it was too intense of a field.

Choosing oral health care,Kaminsky said, “I find teeth less scaryand I like the clinic setting rather thanthe hospital. I’d also like to combine afamily with my work and dentistry will

give me that option.Finding time for a family

would be very difficultto do for a female doc-tor who’s on call 24-hours a day.”

...And Dad’s A Dentist

WhenKaminsky men-tions her mother’sinfluence in working with children, she alsoadds that her Dadhas been a rolemodel in the fieldof oral health.

StevenKaminsky, DDS,received a GeneralDentistry Programcertificate in 1977. He said, “When Igraduated from EDC and went outinto the world I had no perception ofwhat it would be like in the real world.Stan Handelman was my programchair and there were 14-15 residents inmy class. Stan was influential in myeducation because he helped medesign a curriculum to suit my interestso I was able to more forward andbuild a solid career.”

After his program at EDC, Dr.Kaminsky went on to Tufts to studyendodontics. He taught at theUniversity of Pacifica and then wentback to Boston where he practiced asan endodontist for 30 years. He isnow a part-time faculty member atTufts. He said, “The endo field haschanged dramatically in the past 10years. What was once the ‘art’ ofendo now encompasses a whole newtechnology.”

Regarding his time at EDC, Dr. Kaminsky said, “I grew up in theBoston area where people aren’t really too friendly. I have fond memo-ries of EDC because everyone was soopen and friendly.” He added, “EDC is unique in the country because youhave a postdoctoral dental school nextto undergraduate schools. This isunique because it provides easy accessto prospective students to visit andshadow in the field of dentistry. Atmost, with other institutions, studentscommute from their college to the den-tal school and it is very cumbersome.”

Asked if he would like to see his daughter become a dentist, Dr.Kaminsky said, “I think Liz’s mechani-cal skills and good intellect make hera good candidate for the dental field.

She’s also extremely caring, whichonly adds to her skills. Her interestin pediatric dentistry would be a perfect fit.”

UPDATE ON THE BIBBY LIBRARY DIGITIZED

DENTISTRY COLLECTION

t isn’t every day that you see a birdcage in your dentist’s waiting room,

but in Rochester, at the turn of the 20thcentury, you might have. GeorgeEastman, renowned entrepreneur andphilanthropist, established the RochesterDental Dispensary in 1915. The birdcagewas part of Eastman’s efforts to encour-age children not to fear dentistry.

Images such as this are part of therich history of Dentistry in Rochesterthat was not accessible to the public at large, until last spring, when Bibby Library at theUniversity of Rochester’s Eastman Dental Center, received a Regional Bibliographic Database Grant todigitize its historical dentistry collection. The goalof the project was to preserve existing print materi-als while making them more available.

Images and documents contained in the Bibby Library archives tell the story of dentistry inRochester: the Rochester Dental Dispensary andSchool for Dental Hygiene, dentistry’s earliest lead-ers in Rochester, historical dental equipment andprocedures, and the Eastman dental clinics inEurope. Each of these clinics was equipped with a

birdcage, which became a logo forthe Eastman Dental Clinics.

To date, more than 200 dentalimages and documents have been digitized. This process involvesselecting and scanning each piece, editing the images, creatingrecords for each item, and thenuploading the files to theUniversity of Rochester’s UR

Research repository. Once the materials are entered into the repository, they are fully searchable from the Web.

Efforts to make this collection availableto the public have been successful. Sincethe collection has been digitized, thelibrary has received numerous inquiries andrequests for information. enora A. Colaruotolo, social work-er at Eastman Dental Center since

2004, expanded her half-time role toensure a smooth transition of projectoversight and uninterrupted provisionof social work services when EDCsenior social worker Maggie Petroskyresigned.

Kimberly Flint, formerly a dentalassistant in pediatric dentistry, hasaccepted a full-time social work healthproject counselor position. Flint madethe transition to this role with littleeffort given her proven history withthe pediatric dental clinic staff andpatient population and her background

in oral health. She splits her timebetween a federally funded researchproject within the Pediatric DentistryClinic, another project that was-formerly funded by the New YorkState Department of Health, and theDental Home for Children Project.

Julianne Briffa was the first socialwork graduate student intern withinEDC. Briffa has been eager to learnabout social work in oral health care, and has been equally interested inlearning about grant writing, programdevelopment, and the implementationof services. She has already beenhelpful to the Dental Home for

Children Project in a number of waysincluding the development of a pedi-atric dentistry clinic brochure, thecareful review of project charts, andthe refinement of letters developed for communication with pediatric primary care providers.

Site VisitIn early April of 2006, the Dental

Home for Children Project, which issupported by a $250,000 HealthResources and Services Administra-tion (HRSA) grant, hosted a site visitthat was well-attended by a group of people at the local and state level, and by representatives of theAmerican Academy of Pediatrics inChicago. The site visit afforded proj-ect staff an opportunity to showcasethe project and engage in meaningfuldiscussions about the challenges ofattracting and maintaining families in the dental care system. A formalpresentation, a tour of the pediatricdental clinic, a brief tour of the community, and a visit to one ofEDC’s school-based sites were part of the visit. To capture the social context of many vulnerable families in Rochester, a project family wasinterviewed and videotaped withintheir home. This unscripted, candidhome visit, which was incorporatedinto the formal presentation, exempli-fied the vast obstacles facing manypoor families.

t this time, we are stopping the exploration of the feasibility of establishing a small academically focused undergraduate

program and a School of Dental Medicine at the University ofRochester (URSDM). After careful consideration of the feasibilitystudy, Brad Berk, MD, PhD, CEO of the Medical Center, hasdecided that the priorities for the Medical Center including theimmediate facility needs, do not allow for adequate resources orinfrastructure to continue this study. Possible continuation of thestudy will be considered in five years. Dentistry will continue tofocus on its mission and vision articulated at the time of the mergerof Eastman Dental Center into the University of Rochester andrestated in its 2007 Strategic Plan. In addition, as part of theMedical Center’s current strategic planning process (SPF 007),Dentistry will identify and prioritize additional strategies and tactics for the development of translational research and trainingfor academic leadership.

Further exploration of approaches to correct the post-mergeranomalies, create an identity and brand for dentistry, and developan organizational structure that allows dentistry to achieve its goalsand objectives will be undertaken through discussion by Dr. Berkand dentistry’s leadership. In addition, significant progress made in development efforts will continue and focus on projects thatsupport academic leadership training and address program needs. After the strategic planning process is completed, an external advisory group of nationally recognized experts will be appointedby Dr. Berk to conduct a post-merger review of UR Dentistry. This objective review could provide a useful roadmap for UR toregain its reputation in developing academic leaders in dentistry.

hy ‘Momentum?’ This question has been asked repeatedly since

the name was chosen. Why notsomething more descriptive - AlumniNews or Eastman Dental CornerNewsletter, for example.

Well, we liked the sound of theword, for one thing. But ‘Momentum’is more descriptive than it mightappear at first glance: momentum:the force of motion acquired by amoving body as a result of the continuance of its motion.

This is, in a sense, what theEastman Dental Center is about.Eastman is built not only of bricks and tiles, dental chairs and x-ray units, test tubes and charts, but of people -people who come here and contrib-ute something to the institution.Eastman is a bit better for havingbeen here and they, too, have benefit-ed from the experience. And as oneman or woman leaves to move on tosomething new, another appears tocreate a place of his or her own.

Eastman is a moving body. It has been almost 60 years since thefounding of the original RochesterDental Dispensary in 1915, and the numerous changes show that thisinstitution has not been standing still.

The name has changed twice.

The first change wasto honor the institution’sbenefactor, who not onlyprovided the finances butalso initiated that sense ofprogressive movement that stillexists today. George Eastmanrecognized a need for dental carewith an understanding that is probablynot found among the average laymaneven today, and his concern for thefuture of ‘his’ institution was oftenexpressed by surprise visits to the clin-ic at 9 AM to insure that everythingwas being handled properly.

Many years later, in 1965, thename was again changed, this time toreflect the fact that Eastman hadbecome a multi-purpose institution - aspecial Center where dental educationand research stand side-by-side withpatient care.

The educational programs thathave become part of the Center overthe past two decades have changedthrough the years to meet currentneeds. Research continues here, withthe completion of one project, and itsconclusions, leading to the start ofanother.

People who are part of these pro-grams change too, growing as a resultof their experiences.

Amongthose who have

been the cause ofchange at EDC, and who have

felt its effect in the resulting progressare the Center’s alumni. They havebeen part of Eastman’s momentum, and a major purpose of this publica-tion will be to serve as a link betweenthem and the institution they and oth-ers have helped to create.

‘Momentum’ is intended to be atwo-way exchange, and it will reflectwhat we hear from you. Keep us up-to-date on your activities - promo-tions, appointments, opening of a newoffice, honors and awards, andpersonal information. Tell uswhat you would like to see in thefuture - EDC news, news ofalumni, commentary, etc. Atthis time, we plan two issues ayear, but if there is a demand formore frequent publications, wewill meet that demand.

We’d also like to ask you, ifyou haven’t already done so, toplease fill out and return thealumni questionnaire about your

current activities that was sent to you by EDC. If you haven’t receivedone, or if you know of any alumniwho haven’t received one, please letus know.

‘Momentum’ is for others, too: for those who make up the staff of the Dental Center today, and forthose who previously held positionshere; for the members of the board of trustees, a very vital and activegroup of people who are giving timeto make things happen here; and formany others who have shown aninterest. These people have givensomething, and in the process of giv-ing, have contributed in some way tothe Eastman Dental Center’s momentum.

he effects of Early Childhood Caries (ECC) may be well established by 12

months of age so the disease may causeconsiderable destruction to the teethlong before a preschool child is seen by a dentist or hygienist.

An early intervention program in theStrong Hospital ambulatory pediatricclinic was funded with a grant from theDental Bureau of the New York StateDepartment of Health since infants and children are more likely to be seen by a pediatrician or a nurse practitionerthan they are by a dentist during early childhood.

The grant has been renewed for$42,400 per year for the next five years. The renewal is based on the significantincrease in the number of children

treated prior to the onset of ECC during the initial funding period.

The research team involved in thegrant renewal includes Drs. Ronald J. Billings, principal investigator, NeilHerendeen, Robert J. Berkowitz, andJeffrey Karp. The team also includesLenora A. Colaruotolo, Kimberly Flint,Mary Therese Whelehan, and Patricia Ragusa.

The program was a collaborativeeffort involving the faculty, staff, and residents of the University of RochesterMedical Center departments of Dentistryand pediatrics, and the Division of SocialWork. The goal was to improve aware-ness and to increase dental referrals forchildren at risk of ECC.

Parents are talking with Kimberly Flint, social work health project counselor, regarding the importance of good oral healthhabits for their son, who is being treated in the Pediatric Dentistry Clinic.

The Eastman Board owes adebt of thanks to Jim Hendersonfor the dedicated service he hasperformed on behalf of this organization.

He has served in a number ofimportant positions in addition tobeing a Board member over thepast three decades.

He has provided leadership in the areas of finance, devel-opment, and personnel management.

He has diligently attendedmeetings and lent his support asthe Board transitioned throughthe merger with the University ofRochester Medical Center. Hehas been a voice of caution, wis-dom, and caring as the Board andthe dental center branch out intonew directions and initiatives.

He has brought his skills, hisenergy, and his loyalty to theEastman Dental Center

Foundation Board of Directors…and for that, we honor him bymaking this tribute an official partof the June 2007 Board meeting.

he Eastman Dental Center Foundation Board of Directors includes indi-viduals who have historically supported the mission and vision of the

University of Rochester Medical Center and Eastman Dental Center. They are interested in promoting and supporting the mission and vision of EastmanDental Center, and are nationally prominent in oral health education, research, and clinical care and support the mission and vision of the Center.

Several years ago, the Board began to branch out in a number of areas.

New WebsiteThe world has gone digital, the Internet has become one of the most

popular ways to communicate across the globe, and the Board is now on theelectronic highway with its own Website.

I was amazed to learn that Dentistry’s recruitment efforts, which used toinvolve sending out hundreds of packets of information, is now done via theDentistry Website. The forms can all be downloaded and there is an extensiveQ&A site designed to help prospective students with any questions they may have.

The process is easier, cost effective, and quicker, which helps increase our recruitment efforts. We had 585 applications for 58 available positions in 2007 and the numbers continue to increase.

Academic Advisory CommitteeThe Board appointed an Academic Advisory Committee to assist

Dentistry and Medical Center leadership to maintain and improve the qualityof oral health education and research. The committee will do this by an ongo-ing review process of Dentistry’s educational programs and research activities.

The Board members appointed to the Committee include William Calnon,

DDS, Cecile Feldman, DMD, MBA, ChristopherFox, DMD, DMSc, and Richard Ranney, DDS,MS, the Committee chair. The group expects toreview two Eastman Dental Center programsper year, beginning with the PeriodontologyProgram this summer. The review process willbe based on a report form completed by the program director and followed by a one-day site visit review.

For each review, the program director mayalso suggest content experts in addition to thestanding Committee, one of whom would bechosen for the review. The review is intended tobe a constructive, interactive, and non-punitive process to assist programs intheir efforts to support the mission and vision of Dentistry and the Universityof Rochester Medical Center.

Saying goodbyeAt the June Board meeting, a

tribute was read for James Hendersonwho has resigned from the FoundationBoard after a long and devoted service.

This morning, we honor James T.Henderson, a dedicated friend of the Eastman Dental Center Foundation,Inc. Board of Directors.
