Spelling Bee

In Week 7 our school hosted the Regional Spelling Bee in our Hall. With almost 100 students from other schools, along with their families and teachers. Our representatives: Sammy, Emma, Marcus and Julian did us proud. Thank you to Mr Cohen and Miss Raphael for organising the event. We have had a lot of positive feedback from parents and teachers of other schools commending the event and also our Year 6 leaders who welcomed everyone at the gate and escorted them to the Hall. A special thank you to the members of the P&C who baked and set up a morning and afternoon tea for the visiting parents and teachers involved. It was very much appreciated. Well done to everyone involved.

Stage 1 Learning I have had the pleasure of visiting some Stage 1 classes in the Modern Learning Centre to see their Virtual Reality Tours of our school. Their 360 degree photography and accompanying text was very impressive.

Aley Family - Library Donation

Thank you to the Aley Family (Samantha - 5/6C and William - 2B) for their very generous donation of $810 to our PSPS Library. We are looking forward to the wonderful books and resources that will be purchased for our students to enjoy.

Maths Engagement Day

Our Maths Engagement Day last week was lots of fun. My groups in the staffroom had fun spending “money” on catalogue items and using buzzers to be a maths quiz champion. From all accounts, students enjoyed rotating around the myriad of indoor and outdoor learning Maths activities.

Kindergarten 2020

We had a fantastic turn out to our Kindergarten 2020 Orientation Evening. If you know of any families who wish to enrol their students at Peakhurst South next year, it isn’t too late. We have three Kindy Start days in Term 4 which will involve the children learning in the Kindergarten classrooms and parents having information sessions in the Hall at the same time. Contact the Office for more information.

Staff News

Ms Cole has been asked to stay on in her Literacy and Numeracy Strategy Advisor role until the end of the year. She told me she is enjoying the opportunities this role presents and the learning she can bring back to our school next year. Until then, our Executive Team will remain as follows: Mr Cohen - Assistant Principal; Stage 2&3 supervisor Mrs Hart - Relieving Assistant Principal Learning Support; support staff supervisor Ms Szybiak - Relieving Assistant Principal; Early Stage 1 supervisor Mrs Bowden - Relieving Assistant Principal; Stage

1 supervisor; Instructional Leader Executive Team School Visit

Last Thursday morning the Executive Team visited Mascot Public School to observe recognised best practice through classroom observations. They were able to gain further insights into differentiated Guided Reading strategies, Fluency Reading and Fluency Writing, and flexible learning styles. Observing other teachers in other school settings is a valuable and powerful means of professional learning for our staff. This visit has enabled our executive to bring back ideas that could work in our context and trial some of these practices with their classes and stages. This will assist in our planning for 2020.

Tell Them From Me Parent Survey -

have your say! The Tell Them From Me survey is an optional survey offered to schools by the Department of Education. I am in the process of setting up the Parent Survey which I would love for you to find 15 minutes over the next month to complete. By doing this survey, it will allow us to identify areas of strength and areas for improvement from the perspective of parents, and to inform practical changes where needed. It will also inform my leadership of PSPS. As a staff, we can set clear priorities and initiatives based on the results. A flyer will go out in CareMonkey next week with the online link to complete the survey.

Thank You As this is the last newsletter of the term, I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to everyone for making my first term at PSPS such a pleasurable one. It is a testament to the whole school community that despite the changes in staffing and leadership, the school has continued to run smoothly through this transition period. I have loved receiving the kind words of support, and emails outlining how much your children love coming to school. Having a safe and happy learning environment is paramount. Moving forward, I will continue to ensure that all decisions are student-centred decisions, so that coming to Peakhurst South will continue to be a joy for all. Felicity Young

Want to know what children are talking about in ethics class? Want to join in the discussion?

For an in-depth look at the class topics, including background reading and activities designed to start

discussions around the dinner table, see: https://primaryethics.com.au/parents.

From there you can also sign up to the ethics@home newsletter to have this information emailed to you

each term.

Could you be an ethics teacher for Peakhurst South Primary School in 2020?

We are seeking volunteers so that ethics classes are available for all families who have requested them.

Prior experience teaching or knowledge of ethics is not required. Ethics teachers receive full training by

Primary Ethics, the not-for-profit organisation approved to design curriculum and instruction for the

ethics program. Training consists of a two-day workshop and short online modules. Lesson materials are

provided.

In ethics classes, children learn how to think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments

with evidence; rather than act according to blind habit or peer pressure.

“It's great seeing the kids grow in confidence and adding their views and ideas to the

discussion. Even the quietest kids have something to say and in Ethics class,

everyone gets a chance to speak.” Alex, ethics teacher at PSPS.

“Teaching Ethics is such a great way to be involved with the school, my kids and

their peers, a highlight of my week. I am consistently amazed at just how clearly the

kids see and understand the world around them.” Clare, ethics teacher at PSPS.
