46 FÉVRIER/MARS 2017 FEBRUARY/MARCH

During my undergraduate years, I had thehonor of being selected for the 40-voiceWestminster Choir, then the chorus-in-residence at the Spoleto Festival USA(formerly also known as the Festival of

Two Worlds). Those three summers werepriceless. Not only was I a member of one ofthe world’s premier choirs, but I had the un-usual opportunity to interact with some of theburgeoning professionals of the time. Our cho-rus master, Glenn Parker, was a genuinely funperson. He was also a demanding taskmasterwho expected no less than our best because onstage we would be conducted by the likes ofCristian Badea and the late Spiros Argiris.

We would also interact with Renée Flemingbefore she made her Metropolitan Operadebut; the tenor Franco Farina; the bass Vic-tor von Halem and Anthony Laciura, whowould become one of the Met’s best-lovedcharacter tenors and an acclaimed actor in thetelevision series Boardwalk Empire.

Most importantly, we would work with thefestival’s founder, Gian Carlo Menotti, on hisown opera, The Saint of Bleecker Street, andin productions of Parsifal and Jenufa. Spoletodid what a summer program should do; in-spire, educate and convey what it takes to be-come an operatic artist of the first water.

A year after my last Spoleto experience, which, among other things, strengthened mygrasp of the Italian language, I was acceptedas an apprentice and later a fellow at theAspen Music Festival and School. I playedthree lead roles during those summers and gotto hone my craft through first-rate coaching, masterclasses, and performances under theleadership of Edward Berkeley, Jorge Mester,John DeMain and others. The eminent cellistLynn Harrell, whose father Mack Harrell wasa Metropolitan Opera baritone, exhibited abetter legato than most singers. During mythird year, a young cellist came to me and saidthat Mr. Harrell wanted help with phrasing

and breathing in the Schumann Concerto. Mysummer experiences kept getting better!

I was also enrolled in my share of pyramidschemes designed mainly to line the pocketsof the organizers, who bribed government of-ficials in small European villages. Fees wereusually exorbitant and the instruction, mediocre. And yet, during one such otherwisepoor experience, I met a voice teacher outsideof the program who would change my vocallife. She gave me tools that continue to serveme as both singer and teacher.

Thirty years ago, when I applied for theseprograms, the number of singers pursuingopera was small by today’s standards. I oftenencountered the same singers at auditions inNorth America and in Europe. Today, itwould be a miracle if two singers should en-counter each other at more than one auditionvenue. The field is saturated. Many youngsingers are not ready.

Saturation at the “aspiring” level creates ademand for more summer training programs. The majority of programs during my forma-tive years were bona fide training programs.Often philanthropies lowered the financialburden on participants. The schemes that arerampant today reflect the desperation ofyoung singers who need to fill their résumésand validate their applications for more rep-utable programs. It is difficult to convinceyoung singers that it is their well-rounded tal-ents that get them to be seriously considered. And yet it is possible that a young student willmeet his or her next mentor even in the con-text of a predatory program.

The summer experience is still relevant. Iadvise even my professional clients to find in-spiring environments to prepare their nextrole, whether visiting a coach in some idyllicvillage or a teacher who lives in an interestingtown they have never been to. A good summerprogram should: 1) place the young artist in asafe, unfamiliar, inspiring environment in

which he/she can explore the unexpected; 2)provide a curriculum that challenges all as-pects of the student’s craft; 3) offer enoughperforming experiences to allow students toput new discoveries into practice 4) include afaculty of educators who spend their timehelping singers grow.

Too much stress is put on masterclasseswith famous singers. Some are good at it, mostare not. Teaching is a skill that takes years todevelop. Singing and the teaching of singingare different disciplines that require differentskill sets. Few people have both at the highestlevel. A singer may have a great technique andno idea how to communicate to the studenthow to acquire those skills. A singer may be agreat interpreter and have no idea how to con-vey this insight. While it is cool to hang outwith famous people, is it worth thousands ofdollars to find out if they can teach?

Not that I am against famous singers. If Ifind a big name with great teaching skills (suchas Joyce DiDonato) I would do everything pos-sible to have this person at my summer acad-emy. On the other hand, it is inspiring to havehigh-level active performers give concerts andtalk about their experiences. I have had lunch, coffee or dinner with top singers, conductorsand directors when I was in my twenties. Theirinsights remain with me today.

We go to summer programs to learn what weneed to improve, to uncover another piece ofour true selves, to be inspired to go beyond ourcomfort zones. To the aspiring young singer Isay the following: beware of any program thatpromises to fix all of your problems and pavethe way to your big break. That is pure fantasy. If you wish truly to take advantage of the sum-mer program atmosphere, do some research, contact the programs and talk to friends whomay have attended. Make sure that you are get-ting what you expect. Summer programsshould get you closer to your dream, not createa mirage of your favourite operatic stage. LSM
