Crowley’s Achievement/650-8 Honored with U.S. Coast Guard Award for Two At-Sea Rescues in 2013
(TAMPA, Fla.; February xx, 2014) – Crowley Maritime Corporation’s articulated tug-barge (ATB)
Achievement/650-8 was awarded a public service commendation by the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) during
this week’s 8th Annual Maritime Industry Night – a celebratory event that honors the maritime industry
and those who work in it – for two at-sea rescues in less than nine months during 2013. The special award
was presented by the Commandant 7th District Rear Admiral J. H. Korn and Captain of the Port Gregory
Case to Crowley Achievement/650-8 Capt. Gus Cramer and Chief Engineer Vince Mull for their
“excellence in providing assistance with a USCG search and rescue.
“Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg wanted to recognize the professionalism and commitment to the
safety of life at sea displayed by the captain and crew of ATB Achievement,” said Lt. Kate Sullivan,
USCG St. Petersburg public affairs officer. “In a nine-month period, ATB Achievement helped Coast
Guard Sector St. Petersburg respond to two search and rescue cases, providing immediate on-scene
assistance that helped save lives. Without the prudent actions taken by ATB Achievement, it is uncertain
what the outcome of the two search and rescue cases would have been.”
The first rescue, which took place last January, provided the opportunity for Crowley’s crewmembers to
pull aboard a badly injured man struggling to stay afloat near the base of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in
Tampa Bay. During the rescue, the Crowley team quickly lowered the vessel's rescue boat and managed
to pull the man from the water in less than eight minutes from the initial sighting, wrapping him in a
blanket until the St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue boat arrived on scene to perform other life-saving
treatments.
The second incident, which happened in September, saved the lives of four individuals aboard a 30-foot
fishing boat taking on water 35 miles offshore from Clearwater, Fla., during a strong storm.
Both rescues were completed by the same heroic crew, led by Capt. Cramer. Additional crewmembers
involved included Chief Mate Ryan Emmons; Second Mate Peter Madden; A/B Thomas “Duke”
Ellington; Third Mate Dennis Blackman; A/B Louis Ferrer; Engineer Vince Mull; Assistant Engineers
Zach Lindsey, Calvin Burrus and Mark Lettieri; A/B Tankerman Ronnie Robinson; and Robeson Carrier,
cook. The trip was the last for Burrus, who retired after the voyage.
Following both rescues, the ATB went on to safely deliver loads of fuel for the customer.
“On behalf of everyone at Crowley, I want to congratulate this brave crew for putting their training to
good use to perform the vital measures needed to rescue those in peril in such a short amount of time,”
said Crowley’s Rob Grune, senior vice president and general manager, petroleum services. “These
crewmembers are true heroes and deserve to be recognized for their actions. We are most appreciative of
the recognition by the U.S. Coast Guard for this important work.”
The crew of Crowley’s Achievement/650-8, is fully trained and prepared to respond to a variety of
incidents. In addition to meeting defined regulatory training requirements, the company’s crewmembers
participate annually in company-sponsored safety programs, designed exclusively for mariners. The
program provides training in survival tactics, shipboard fire fighting, medical incidents and other relevant
topics to give the mariners the skills they need to survive in emergency situations.
An ATB is a tank vessel (the barge) that can carry a variety of petroleum and chemical products. The tank
vessel is connected to a large, powerful tugboat that propels and maneuvers the vessel. Crowley owns and
operates 17 U.S.-flagged ATBs, which include 155,000-barrel, 180,000-barrel and 330,000 barrel
capacity tank vessels. Crowley also owns two U.S.-flagged tankers with 330,000 barrel capacity. Each
vessel is chartered to leading companies in the petroleum and chemical industries. Additionally, Crowley
operates a number of Jones Act tankers on behalf of other owners which trade both domestically and
internationally.
