By John Pawlowski Congratulations to Alicia Nix, this month’s Volunteer of the

Month. Alicia has consistently volunteered throughout 2004, includ-ing the last several Trophy Series Races. She has also stepped up to assist in writing the Member Profiles in the News on the Run. Her first profile of Alan Reiley appears in this month’s issue. Alicia has over 30 hours of volunteering for 2004 and is eligible for the running gear awarded to volunteers who have over 30 hours.

Alicia joined RMRR in February 2003 and her first trophy se-ries race was the 4.4 mile Wash Park race in December 2002, before she joined. Alicia began running in the summer of 2001, and enjoys RMRR since it gives her the opportunity to run with other runners. In addition to volunteering, Alicia enjoys running the Tro-phy Series races and finished in the top 20 for the past 2 years. Aiming for the monthly Trophy Series races helps keep her focused on running and gives her the oppor-tunity to better her pace, time and endurance. Since she began running, she has also competed in Fall Frenzy Duathlon and Boulder Backroads half-marathon.

In addition to running and volunteering, Alicia enjoys reading, writing, and poetry and enjoys many of the outdoor sports that Colorado has to offer. Please join us in thanking Alicia for her volunteer efforts and congratulations for being Volunteer of the Month.

A Letter from the President…

Important Dates to Remember Sunday, January 9, Trophy Series Race, Twin Lakes Park—NEW LOCATION FOR 2005 Sunday, January 16, Volunteer and Awards Banquet, More info on page 14 Saturday, February 5, February Trophy Series Race (NOTE: Change in day from last month’s schedule.)

Well, the D e c e m b e r T r o p h y Race at Wash Park completed a year of near p e r f e c t weather for our events. We had a

total of 103 runners and race walkers compared to 72 for last December’s race at Wash Park. Mike and Chris Vanoni did a great job as Race Direc-tors. A special thanks to Heather Reddy and Jim Chow for taking the time to work with Mike on the course setup and unpacking the van at the office after the race. Both Heather and Jim are thinking about directing their own race next year. Please join me in offering them your encouragement and help! In addition, a hearty “Thanks” to Potts, aka Pathenia Jones, for very able voice and additional raffle prizes!!! We all should try to help or partici-pate in the Kwanza 5K Run on Dec 26th and the Run for the Dream on Jan 15th. The number of members participating is up over last year and we hope to continue this trend. Please let myself or any of the other Board Mem-bers know if you have any ideas or goals for 2005 that will make our events more enjoyable and /or increase the value of your membership. We hope to attract more and more of our membership into participating as either volunteers or participants at our events. We are always in need of non-running volunteers, which by the way is how I got started when I first joined the club. It’s a great way to get

exposed to our handicap race system and meet the really great people that help out on a regular basis at all our events. Without this core group, our club couldn’t exist!!! We are still in need of someone to step forward to take the system that Lee Bengston has developed for the Volunteer Coordinator position and carry it forward. Lee has fine tuned his system for the last 2 years and feels that with his help and Nancy Stone’s continued assistance, anyone that enjoys talking and meeting people would find this position very rewarding. The 2005 race schedule was included in the De-cember issue of News on the Run. My thanks to all those who provided comments and suggestions. Bonnie is also looking for members willing to direct the monthly Trophy Series Races(12) and the Summer Marathon Training Races(4). Directing a race is a great way to support the club and earn the clothing/gear award at the Annual Awards and Volunteer Banquet held each January. My thanks to those who have already agreed to direct some of the races. Hope to see many of you on Sunday evening January 16th for the Annual Awards and Volunteer Party. It will be held at the Fox Hollow Golf Course, details in this issue of News on the Run and on rmrr.org. May the great running weather continue! Doug Smith

Calling All Race Directors and Anyone Who Wants to Learn Directing a race is a great way to give back to the club, earn volunteer hours, and get that warm fuzzy feeling that

comes from helping out. There are several open opportunities in the race schedule above, and more experienced mem-bers are willing to co-direct with you if you want to learn how to direct a race. If interested in directing a trophy series race or a Marathon Training Series race for the upcoming racing season, please contact Bonnie Keefe at [email protected] or call 303-741-4065.

By Doug Smith The RMRR Board is composed of up to 15 members and includes the Executive Committee. In addition to serving on the Board, these individ-ual members have volunteered to perform other responsibilities. I've also included members who perform other needed tasks within the club. Everyone who enjoys the many benefits of club membership should be very thankful to all those who choose to hold positions or perform other responsibilities within the club. Lastly, the club depends on the many volunteers who help put on each of our races. A complete list of their names is included on the back cover of each issue of News on The Run with the hours they have contributed. As of the writing of this article, the club still needs a Volunteer Coordina-tor. Lee Bengston has held this position for the last 2 years and is step-ping down after the December Trophy Race. On behalf of the 2004 Board, we are very appreciative of Lee's efforts and are thankful that he will continue to serve on the 2005 Board as a Member-at-Large and to help train the new Volunteer Coordinator. The system he has developed will be helpful for any member wishing to step forward. The main require-ment is a willingness to spent 2-4 hours a month on the phone, 1-2 weeks prior to each club race. Training Group Runs

The group that meets on Tuesday & Saturday is an offshoot of the Rocky Mountain Road Runners located in Denver, Colorado. The club spans all genders, ages, and abilities. Race Walkers are also welcome. Being a RMRR member is not a pre-requisite to joining us at any of the club's monthly Tro-phy Races, Tues Fun Runs, Sat Training Runs or the summer Marathon Training Series. The club provides free Power Gels on the Sat Training Runs while our supply lasts. See rmrr.org for additional information on the club. The Tuesday evening Fun Runs are at Wash-ington Park in Denver at 6 p.m. The group usually does 2 laps, about 5+ miles. Those interested, go for dinner after everyone is fin-ished.

The Saturday Training Runs are on various sections of the Highline Canal. The distance can vary from 8-22 miles according to the indi-vidual's or group's needs. The routes selected will be on compacted dirt trail, although there may be very short portions of asphalt or con-crete. We will try to have a car parked at or close to the scheduled midpoint for that week, so that we can re-fuel with more water and Power Gels. See Calendar for Saturday Run Locations.

Track Workouts The RMRR track workouts are not being held during the winter months. Check back in the Spring for the Track Workout schedule.

Training Partner Program Call Devin Croft (303) 978-9342, [email protected]. Leave your name, address, phone number, typical 10K pace, and time of day you run. Devin will do his best to

Other board positions: everyone will continue on except for Lee as Volunteer Coordinator. He’ll resign January 1 after 3 years of service. Lee will put together a short list of candi-dates. Kolene is looking for someone to record the phone message on the club hotline.

3. Computer race scoring at Nov T/S race – Last month’s scoring went well per Brad. He was able to put all the scores in and check later before sending out.

4. Website hosting – Alan – site is up at new hosting co. The site was set up from backup, so has some broken links. Some photo files were not uploaded because they are too big (.tif format vs .jpeg). Digihost had suspended our site because some of our files exceeded their limits. They maintained we were contacted, we could find no record they the club was told about any issues prior to the site being taken down. Attempts to contact Digihost proved to be difficult, they ignored Doug’s email and phone messages. They finally called back a week later, but by then the site was moved. Network Solutions is updated. Doug is the primary contact, he’ll look at citing positions as contacts instead of people.

5. 2005 Race calendar/locations – No conflicts with major races at this point.

6. Replace van window – Betsy. $300 to replace the windshield. Will check Van window at the next race. Seems to be expensive. Bonnie has a contact she’ll ask.

7. Club database – Brad will send out a new copy to board members after the Dec TS race.

8. Potential speakers for January banquet. Doug will contact a few of the possible speakers.

9. Minutes approved as amended. Leslie Mitchell did attend the No-vember board meeting.

Long Term Goals: 1. Timing system for 1000 runners would be about $46k, 100 runners

would be $14k. Our own automated system has some headroom, so we’re fine for now.

December Trophy Series As Doug mentioned in his column, the weather gods dished up great weather for another Trophy Series Race. Thank you to Mike and Chris

Vanoni for directing the race in Wash Park and to Potts for cheering on all of the runners and being the race starter. In Trophy Series scoring, Thomas Black took top honors, moving up from 3rd place last month. Brendan Croft took second place and Nick Benjamin and Joy Knipps tied for 3rd. Adam Feerst was fast male with a time of 26:26 and Deb Cunningham was fast female with a time of 31:12. In the racewalker category, Barbara Jansen took first place, to match her first place finish at the June race.

Continuing from last month’s appraisal of the Trophy Series standings, Adam Feerst discusses the Trophy Series scoring, Resolute Runner

Award and possible standings for the upcoming year. Please see his article beginning on page 1. Special thanks to Brad Labarry for compiling all of the year end scores. The January Trophy Series Race will be a 10k at Twin Lakes Park.

This is a new 10k course, but other 10k times to beat for the race are:

31:31 Male Robbert Fitts (Sloans Lake, May 1976) 38:38 Female Sue Oran (DeKoevand Park, May 1978) 51:54 Walker Mike Blanchard (City Park, Feb 1995)

Race Walkers Michael Blanchard wrapped up the race walking title after the October race. He regains the title he won in 2002, after missing out on the trophies

last year. Ed Guiff was consistent throughout the year to finish 2nd. Jan Hallez finished strong in the last two races to earn the 3rd place trophy. She finished

just 13 points behind Ed. John Lyle finished just out of the trophies, in 4th place.

Female Scratch Deb Cunningham continued her dominance, winning the Female Scratch title for the fourth straight year. Deb finished 1st in 5 of the 12 races, and

never finished lower than 3rd. Bonnie Keefe and Kolene Brown finished 2nd and 3rd, repeating from last year. Leslie Mitchell finished 4th, moving up 1 place from last year. Joanne

Winge captured the final, 5th place trophy. Erin Kaspar was the fastest in 4 races; Karen Voss in 3 races. However, they both missed too many races to earn enough points for trophies.

Male Scratch Scott Kukel won the Male Scratch title, moving up from 2nd place last year. Scott won 4 of the 12 races, more than any other male runner this year.

He got faster throughout the year, lowering his HCP from 58 after the January race, to a low of 46 after August, before finishing at 50. New member David Rothenburger won 2 races, and just edged out Rick Edrich by 3 point to finish 2nd. Rich Edrich repeated his 3rd place finish

from last year. Michael Collyer and John Bullock took the 4th and 5th place trophies. Setting up what could be a good battle for next year, several fast runners had high averages, but not enough races to earn trophies this year. This

includes Tim Gentry (2 top finishes in 2004), myself (2 top finishes in 2004), and Salim Rothman-Haji.

Next Newsletter Deadline, Friday January 14 The Newsletter Deadline is generally the Friday following that month’s Trophy Series Race. Next month’s deadline will be Friday,

January 14. Share your stories, photos, comments, thoughts, musings about running. Have a story or photos of other races you would like to share? Please send all submissions to [email protected].

Resolute Runner Mike Knipps won this year's Ric Robinette Resolute Runner award, finishing 151 points ahead of last year's winner Rick Edrich. Ric Robinette (for

whom the award is named) finished 3rd; Jeffrey Olson finished 4th; Deb Cunningham finished 5th. The Resolute Runner award goes to the runner with the most Trophy Series points over a four year period. This year's award is based on races

from 2001-2004. All 12 races count, so you can't drop a bad or missed race. Thus, since you almost certainly have to do all 12 races for four consecu-tive years, this is sometimes referred to as the "Get-a-Life" award.

This is the first time in who knows how many years, someone other than a Ric(k) (Edrich, Robinette or Brito) has won the award. Ric Robinette

certainly qualifies for Get-a-Life status. He hasn't missed a Trophy Series race since sometime in the 80s. Next year's race is shaping up to be extremely competitive. For 2005, we drop the 2001 scores and count from 2002-2005. After dropping the

2001 scores, Ric Robinette starts the year in the lead. However, Mike Knipps is only 2.1 points behind; Scott Kukel only 14.6 points; and Rick Edrich only by 64.8 points.

Looking two years ahead, to 2006, Deb Cunningham is hot on their heels. Scott McFarlane is moving up the list. Jeff Olson has been lurking

around for a few years. Kolene Brown and Alicia Nix could also be in the mix.

Looking forward So you didn't win a trophy in 2004? As Cubs fans say, "Wait till next year!" Every-

one starts out fresh again in January (except for the Resolute Runner award). It's a new chance to chase titles, chase trophies, and chase your friends.

Steady improvement is the key to success in the Trophy Series. Mike Knipps won

the Trophy Series title by showing steady, gradual improvement throughout the year. That kind of progress also reflects a smart approach to training.

Consistency is also important. Many of the trophy winners didn't improve their HCP,

but did stay at about the same level throughout the year. Most importantly, you have to show up. Every trophy winner this year, in every

category, did at least 10 races.

Additional Statistics • 241 members did at least one TS race this year (not including non-members). • 32 racers did 10 or more races this year. 72 did 6 or more. • The biggest single race improvement came from Josh Kail, who lowered his HCP

from 113 to 83 in the March race.

Thomas Black is the unidentified runner in last month’s News on the Run photo of Trophy Series winners. Thomas was also the first place winner of the December Trophy Series race. Congratula-tions Thomas!

POTTS TROTTERS

The Trophy Series (TS) is a monthly race series featuring a handicap start and scoring system. Participants start at different times. In theory, everyone finishes together. Start times are based on previous TS times. If this is your first TS race, we can use a recent 5k or 10k time to assign you a start time. Please arrive at least 15 min early for first time registra-tion. All TS races are open to the public. Entry fee is $5 for non-members; free for members. Race day registration only. If you are a new club member, just show up. You don't need your membership card. In order to ensure fairness to all runners at Trophy Series events, please adhere to the course as announced at the beginning of the race. Runners who go off course or do not complete the announced course will be disqualified and receive no points. You are re-sponsible for starting at your as-signed time. A reminder to all Trophy Series participants: Unfortunately, our insurance does not cover dogs or baby strollers on the race course. Sorry! Runners changing to walking and

vice versa MUST let us know at registration, before the race. This will affect the scoring. Check your race tag to make sure it is correct. An “R” on the label means runner and a “W” means walker. Walk-ers are expected to follow USATF rules. 1) The weight-bearing leg must have a straight knee. 2) Ground contact must be main-tained at all times If you have any questions about these rules, feel free to ask the race director or an experienced race-walker.
