TAMIL NADU

1. Following the announcement last week by Municipal Administration Minister S.P. Velumani to withhold the hike in property tax, the Chennai Corporation is finding it difficult to collect the taxes.

2. Close to 85 idols of the 2,622 idols, seized from art smuggler Subhash Kapoor, with a combined value of USD 107 million during the 2012 raid will be brought back to India in March 2020 in the first phase, said S. Vijay Kumar, art enthusiast and founder of India Pride that tracks Indian antiques.

3. Connemara library to sport a new look soon

PWD takes up work on heritage structure with funds from School Education Dept.

Constructed in the Indo- Saracenic style of architecture in 1896, the library is a repository of several centuries-old books. Officials of the Public Works Department noted that the current building was added to the heritage portion of the library during the 1970s.

4. The Chennai Corporation has estimated that in two years, its revenue through property tax collection will fall by 75%, compared to last year.

The property tax collected in 2018-19 fiscal was more than Rs. 1,000 crore. For the next two years, if the old rates are back, the Corporation is likely to net only around Rs. 250 crore per year.

1. The Supreme Court on Sunday put on hold a plea for ordering a floor test in the Maharashtra Assembly till it examined records that might shed light on what led Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to invite BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis to form the government and later swear him in as the Chief Minister on November 23. A three-judge Bench, led by Justice N.V. Ramana, requested Solicitor-General Tushar Mehta, in his capacity as the Centre’s law officer, to place on record before the court, by 10.30 a.m. on November 25, the letter of Mr. Fadnavis to the Governor staking claim to form the

government. Mr. Mehta was also asked to produce the Governor’s order

of November 23.

2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his monthly radio broadcast Maan Ki Baat on Sunday, lauded the “patience and maturity” shown by the people of the country in accepting the Supreme Court verdict in the Ayodhya case, and said the respect for the judiciary had gone up..

3. The government has said it is pushing Uttar Pradesh and

Madhya Pradesh to make progress on the Ken-Betwa river interlinking project, according to a response to a question in the Rajya Sabha last week. The project involves transferring surplus water from Ken river in Madhya Pradesh to the Betwa in Uttar Pradesh and irrigate 3.64 lakh hectares in the Bundelkhand region of both States. The Rs. 18,000 crore project has been mired in several controversies. The most recent one is a disagreement between the States on the share of water.

4. The hearing on Sunday in the Supreme Court on the plea of the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress combine is the third instance this year when the apex court held a special proceeding on a non-working day. On April 20, the SC held a hearing on Saturday after a former employee accused then CJI Ranjan Gogoi of sexual harassment. Later on November 9, the SC delivered its historic verdict, again on Saturday, in the Ayodhya case.

5. Arunachal Pradesh, India’s eastern-most State, wants a separate cadre of bureaucrats because of its cultural and topographical diversity. Officials and police officers posted in the State belong to the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre, and are deputed for a minimum of two years and above.

Governor Brigadier B.D. Mishra (retired) raised the issue at the annual conference of Governors held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Saturday.

6. The latest National Statistical Office (NSO) survey on sanitation debunked the claims of an open defecation-free or ODF India made by the Centre’s flagship Swachh Bharat scheme, although it did record great progress in toilet access and use in rural areas. The survey, released on Saturday, showed that about 71% of rural households had access to toilets at a time the Centre was claiming 95%. On October 2, 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that the whole country was ODF with complete access to toilets.

7. India bulldozed Bangladesh by an innings and 46 runs in

their first ever day-night Test to record a 12th home series win in a row.
