Blazek first came up with the idea eight years ago when he wanted to produce personalized greeting cards. Atthe time, he went to a local bank to seek financing but they turned him down due to his youth and inexperience.Although being turned down, the seed was sown and Blazek kept the idea in his heart.

After receiving a certificate in Arts Administration from Grant MacEwan college Blazek went to work for Seemagazine. It was here that he developed his writing and marketing skills. Wanting to use both skills Blazekreturned to college and received a diploma in Public Relations. One Million DollarsEdmonton — June 24,1999 — The man whose workshop taught Jessie Foveaux how to write a million-dollarstory is coming to Edmonton. Charley Kempthorne, North America’s preeminent personal historian, isscheduled to be in the city on July 16th and 17th . He will be teaching Edmontonian’s how to record andwrite their own personal memoirs in Feature Gallery #2 at the Provincial Museum of Alberta.

Kempthorne first taught Foveaux at a workshop he held in a local adult learning center in Manhattan, Kansas inearly 1977. Over the course of many months Foveaux’s story developed from a letter to her grandchildren into a200-page book that included painful memories of her marriage to an alcoholic husband. For the next seventeenyears Foveaux would get requests for copies of her book from friends and neighbors. She would gladly sendthem a copy for the price it cost her to print.

When Kempthorne started Lifestory magazine, what would later be called “the bible of the memoir movement”by the Orange County Register, he sent news releases across the US. Clare Ansberry, a reporter for the WallStreet Journal, was interested in the story and asked to see some of the books his students had written. He senther several copies, one of which was Foveaux’s. Intrigued by Foveaux’s story Ansberry flew down to Manhat-tan, Kansas and interviewed the elderly lady. On March 6, 1997 the story about Foveaux’s life appeared on thefront page of the Wall Street Journal. A bidding war for the publishing rights ensued and Foveaux was givenmore than a million dollars as an advance.

This is Kempthorne’s first visit to Canada. His workshop is being sponsored by The Write Thought Card andBook Company, a personal memoir publishing house. Tickets for the workshop, which includes lunch, are$55.00 before July 15, 1999. $75.00 at the door. They are available by calling Paul at The Write ThoughtCard and Book Company at 432 - 5663. Both workshops are expected to sell out.

Charley Kempthorne can be reached for interviews before June 30,1999 at 1 - 800 685 - 7330After June 30 please contact Paul R. Blazek at 780 - 432 - 5663 to arrange an interview
