The challenge consisted of a 52 km hike through the hinterland of Springbrook, to raise money for student’s well-being, as well as a test of our physical and mental capabilities. Most of our team was able to successfully complete this trek which began at 11 am on Saturday and continued into the early hours of Sunday morning. We walked through the cold night, torrential rain, lightning and thunder, with blisters and sore bodies and kept our complaints to a minimum. Despite these unforeseen circumstances, generally speaking, we maintained great team spirit throughout the course of the walk, we supported each other with encouragements and songs, we even named the areas of most difficulty with appropriately sarcastic names such as; Death Hill and Chocolate Fountain Mountain. There are two amazing teachers to thank for making this all possible for us. They stayed positive and put up with our off-key singing and whining, for a consecutive 18 long hours. The time spent is doubled when you add up the additional hours of planning and training leading up to the weekend, which we could not be more grateful for. Thank you, Miss Thomas and Miss Williams. This event was eye opening for our whole team, we developed a sense of companionship that is very hard to come by. Every person accomplished an achievement in some way through the challenge. Even those who unfortunately did not make it to the end had to come to terms with their decision, sometimes it is just as hard to acknowledge and accept when it is time to stop, to prevent further injury. I have participated in the Kokoda challenge twice and each time it has given me a fulfilling sense of achievement. This year I encouraged my sister to join me on this journey, and at 4:45 in the morning when we crossed the finish line together, the exhaustion in our bodies was so obvious and yet the happiness was so grand that no one would believe that we had been walking since the morning before. I was so proud of every person who gave the challenge their best. There is nothing like that moment you cross the finish line with your team. The Kokoda Challenge is a physical quest which I believe everyone needs to experience at least once in their lives. Zyla Steele, year 11 Kokoda Kudos

During the last weekend of the school holidays a small number of talented and dedicated students embarked on an incredibly challenging 52km hike in the Gold Coast hinterland. The Kokoda Challenge is a charity event designed to test the participants’ endurance, determination and resilience whilst raising money for the Kokoda Youth Foundation. Toormina High School was lucky enough to enter two teams into this prestigious event, the Toormina Typhoons and the Toormina Tornadoes. The race began at 11am on a beautiful bright and sunny Saturday morning with 150 school teams jostling for a place near the front. Our teams found each other amongst the crowd and decided to hike as one group and support each other the entire way. The first 12km of the hike proved surprisingly difficult with what felt like non-stop hike up a never-ending mountain. Despite this challenge our teams kept a smile on their faces and encouraged not only the members of our team, but students from other schools who were struggling with the ascent. It became common for other passing teachers to remark on how positive and friendly Toormina High students were despite the challenging nature of the terrain. A number of our students took some time when they reached the top of the mountain to have a 20 minute photo shoot with some beautiful scenery in the background. We reached the first support crew checkpoint in mostly good spirits. This was a chance to grab a quick bite to eat, refill our water and (for a few unlucky ones) attend to some already painful blisters. With our snacks refilled we took off again, determined to pick up our pace. It wasn’t long before the speakers came out and the music started, giving our students a boost of energy and a chance for Miss Thomas to attempt singing along to ‘Despacito’. The trail quickly turned from an easy, slow descent to a horrendously steep downhill section, just to make sure those knees were added to the list of painful body parts. As the sun started to go down, the ominous clouds began to roll in. It was beginning to look like we were in for a long night. The skies opened up as an unbelievable lightning storm began to hit all around us. It wasn’t long before we were soaked to the bone and starting to shiver. Walking through the river crossing ensured that our shoes and socks were wringing wet and sealed our fate – our blisters were going to get much, much worse by the end of this. The pitch black night was steadily pierced by lightning bolts all around us – the storm had not dissipated as we had hoped. The speaker died, only to be replaced by Ee Ee singing songs of her own creation. We eventually came to the section we had affectionately nicknamed ‘Death Hill’ on last year’s hike. This mountain begins with a steep, loose gravel surface making you feel like every step will result in you losing your footing and rolling back down to the start. The pouring rain only made this worse. We were relieved to see the gravely death hill come to an end, only to discover the newly named Chocolate Fountain Mountain. The slippery mud caused every small step to slide back into its started position, making this trek even harder. We were dismayed to discover around every small bend was another hill to climb, it was beginning to seem impossible. It began commonplace to see other hikers covered head to toe in mud from multiple tumbles down the mountain. With burning legs, massive blisters and rain pouring down their faces, our students reached the top and miraculously continued to smile and cheer on other teams. We continued on, finally reaching the second support crew checkpoint after over 12 hours of hiking. Our feet were in incredible pain, and most of us spent our limited time bandaging our feet, trying to find some small amount of comfort for the last 15km of our journey. With some hot food in our bellies, we walked away from our comfortable chairs only to come across another steep, slippery mountain to climb.

A huge congratulations to our students, Hannah Bake, Jodie Wood, Nara Donovan, Zyla Steele, Vanessa Steele, Charles Thomson, Ee Ee Nuon and Erin Potter who pushed themselves to the best of their ability and challenged themselves both physically and mentally. Also to Miss Lucy Thomas whose positive attitude and strength kept the whole team moving. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents of those students involved, not just for the huge amount of support given through this journey, but for raising such kind, caring and supportive people. We are incredibly lucky to have these students as part of our Toormina High community. Kate Williams, PDHPE Teacher

Luckily for us, we knew the worst was behind us and we were able to focus on supporting each other to the end. Our students put in a very strong effort in the last 15km and completed the hike in 17 hours and 45 minutes. Whilst this challenge is incredibly demanding on both the body and the mind, our students kept smiling and encouraging all those around them.

for supporting our Year 10 Work Experience students.

Tutoring WorkshopsOver the July school holidays, many of our year 12 students participated in an intensive tutoring workshop. Experienced stage 6 teachers covering HSC subjects in English, mathematics, science, HSIE, CAPA, PDHPE and TAS helped prepare our students for the upcoming examinations. Held over 4 days and running from 9am to 4pm each day, the workshop proved a hit as some subjects had as many as 15-20 students participate. Good luck year 12 in your upcoming Trial HSC!

From 25th - 26th August, 13 students from Toormina High School attended the Regional Debating Camp. All of the students enjoyed themselves thoroughly and learnt a lot from the mock debates they participated in and workshops that they attended across the two days. Our year 9/10 team were the zone winners, which meant that they progressed through to the regional quarter-finals where they debated against Woolgoola High School. The topic was "That online gambling should be banned" and Toormina were the negative team. Toormina were successful in winning this debate which meant that they then progressed through to the regional semi-finals. The semi-finals took a twist as they had to leave camp to debate via video conference with Norfolk Island Central School. This was an excellent experience for the students and it was wonderful to be able to compete against students so far away - 1439kms to be exact!! Toormina was once again the negative side and the topic was "That we should allow safety screening of drugs at music festivals". In what was a close debate, Toormina were once again awarded the win. This saw the team progress through to the regional finals. The region started with 42 teams and the finals bought it down to just two. The finals saw Toormina and Alstonville compete against each other for the regional winner title. Once again, Toormina were awarded the negative side of the case with a flip of a coin. The topic was "That we should remove art and music from the curriculum and replace them with science". It was a very high quality debate with excellent ideas put forward from both teams, ultimately though, Alstonville inched just in front of Toormina to take the win.

U16 Girls AFLToormina High was proudly represented at the AFL Swans Cup by an outstanding group of young women in years 7-10. We came up against strong opposition in Coffs Harbour High School, John Paul College and Bishop Druitt College. We had a successful day progressing through the round robin with 2 wins and 1 loss, making it into the final against a very competitive JPC side. We put up a strong fight, despite having no experienced AFL players in our side, but unfortunately went down by 3 goals in the final. Excellent performances on the day by Jenna Stevenson, Trinity Uerata, Shavanah Boota, Tori Rose, Karli Rann and Kirra Richards. If any girls are interested in getting involved in the local junior AFL competition, please see Miss Williams in the PDHPE staffroom for more information.

U15’s BasketballOn Tuesday of week 2 Toormina High sent two teams to compete in the U15’s Basketball Knockout Gala day at Sportzcental. Our boys kicked off the day, competing against a strong Woolgoolga High team. After letting the opposition get away to a strong start, Toormina High clawed their way back into the game through their persistence and positive attitude. Unfortunately it was not enough and the boys ultimately lost by 2 points at the end of the fourth quarter. The U15 girls team also began the day competing against a competitive Woolgoolga High team. With excellent rebounding skills and tremendous teamwork, we pulled ahead to a 12-2 lead at half time. With some outstanding offensive individual performances from Piara Yap Stokes, Shyleaker Braam, Bella Paunovic and Trinity Uerata, the girls continued to increase their lead to 26-6 by the end of the game. With the girls through to round 2, we were up against a very strong opposition in Bellingen High school. Unfortunately Bellingen were too strong in defence, and they took the win 28-10. Excellent performances from Rachel Holm, Cori Garner, Lucy Kasics and Charlet East.Well done to all those involved.

PBL Needs Your Input!!!The PBL team this week were able to start the process of allowing our students to have their say on what they think about their school and how they would like it to be like in the future. Over the coming weeks, you, as parents and community members will also get the opportunity to have input in helping to shaping the future of our school. This will be done via our Skoolbag app, Facebook and also by paper surveys that will be sent home with your child. We encourage you to take this opportunity to let us know what you think of our school and how you would like it to be in the future for you and your children.Left are some of the words that our Year 12 students used to tell us how they would like our school to look, feel and sound. Rachel Charnock, Support Teacher https://goo.gl/forms/IL0AYut9QWzkM4nD3

Earlier this year I went on a 6-month exchange in Belgium to learn French. While Australian schools were on their summer holidays, I started my schooling completely in another language. Most people would view this as the biggest difference between Australia and Belgium but there were so many other things that came as a shock to me.School life was VERY formal. No one had much of a relationship with their teachers and the learning environment was extremely traditional. There was absolutely no talking in class or between classes, no mucking around, we had to stand if any teacher came in or out of the classroom while calling them “Sir” or “Madam” if we were talking directly to them. Another big difference in Belgian schooling was the 8-hour school day. This was a MASSIVE shock to me, we were in lessons from 8-1:30 and then we got a 45-minute break and then another 3 lessons after that, very different from Toormina.

Ella’s Exchange

The Belgian diet was also quite different, firstly they LOVE snails and frog’s legs. I outright refused to try snails, they look disgusting, but I did try frog’s legs and they were OK in the end. The main difference is how healthy they eat, I know Belgians are renowned for their fries, waffles and chocolate (which I definitely ate my fair share of) but they eat a lot of protein and vegetables and not a lot of processed sugar and salt. They are actually pretty against processed foods in general even though they sell them in the shops they mostly promote healthy eating and extensive exercise. And obviously language was a shock. Most kids my age can’t speak much English at all and instead can speak around 3-4 other languages. This is probably to do with the fact that Belgium is surrounded by other countries that don’t speak French or Flemish. Even though kids at school couldn’t speak English very well, most of the adults or parents that I interacted with could, due to the fact that our town, Arlon, was on the border with another country called Luxembourg. Luxembourg is a very culturally diverse country with a lot of migrants from across Europe working in one place, so to make it easier for people they naturally speak English in the workplace. This meant that even if people couldn’t speak English they could understand most of what I was saying.Even though going on exchange led to a real culture shock I had the best time and wouldn’t have changed anything. I think if any other students get the opportunity to go on exchange they should definitely take it because it will be the best experience of your life!

Please share your opinions with us on how you would like our school to look, feel and sound by clicking on this link.

Principal’s ColumnThe much anticipated work on improving the façade of the school commenced at the beginning of this term. The work will take approximately 18 weeks to complete. I apologise for any convenience this may cause during this time. During the holidays several improvements occurred in the Support Unit. The playground area received a much needed refurbishment. New grass, seated areas and paths were put in and this has made this area an asset instead of an eyesore. Additionally an electronic gate and fencing were put in, improving student safety.

The school bus had its first outing in the holidays, travelling to the Gold Coast transporting our team who completed the Kakoda Challenge 52km walk through the Gold Coast hinterland. Despite being smashed by a big storm, walking a very challenging course, the team completed the walk in 17 hours and 45 minutes. Well done team.I am happy to inform our community that I have been advised that the first stage of air-conditioning for classrooms has gone to tender. It is anticipated that this work will commence in term 4 in time for the summer. We have also taken delivery of some new outdoor furniture for the Senior’s Area that is currently being installed. Can I please ask parents to assist Toormina High School by encouraging students to wear the correct uniform each day. We are currently focused on improving school pride and wearing the correct uniform by students is an important aspect. There will be some significant changes over the next month as we move to the Learning Management Business Reform (LMBR) platform. Separate notes have been sent regarding payment changes. With the departure at the end of term 2 of Mrs McDowell to retirement, Ms Susan Jordan will be relieving as Deputy Principal. Mr Craig Holden is currently relieving for Mrs Melanie Murray who is on Long Service Leave. Mr Joseph Anderson will relieve for Mr Craig Holden who has been seconded to a Mathematics Consultancy position for the rest of 2017.Paul Humphrey, Principal

Congratulations to all of our Major and Minor Award recipients from last semester. It is great to see that your hard-work was recognised and you received the accolades you deserved. Congratulations also to our girl’s rugby league team, boy’s junior and senior rugby league teams and our debaters for their first class efforts on representing our school. The girl’s and junior boy’s rugby league teams have won through to the next round and will need to travel to Sydney for their next games.

Dear Parents and Carers

Toormina High School will transition to the new NSW Public Schools’ finance system and a new

bank account on 4 September 2017.

To ensure a smooth transition, there will be changes to the way we accept payments from parents

and carers.

1. Direct deposits: As of 25 August 2017, we will no longer accept direct deposits into our

current school bank account as we prepare to close this account and transition to the new

one. Any payments made using direct deposit after this date cannot be properly allocated to a

student’s account in a timely manner. Please ensure you have made any outstanding direct

deposits before 25 August 2017.

2. EFTPOS payments: We will not be able to accept EFTPOS payments between 29 Augustand 4 September 2017. Please ensure that you have made any outstanding EFTPOS

payments before 29 August, 2017. From 4 September 2017, EFTPOS payments will be

accepted as before.

3. Cash and cheque payments: Between 25 August 2017 and 4 September 2017, we will also

not be able to accept payments by cash or cheque as we prepare to close our current bank

account and transition to the new one. Please ensure that you have made any outstanding

cash or cheque payments before 25 August 2017. From 4 September 2017, cash and

cheque payments will be accepted as before.

4. Online payments (POP): As of 25 August 2017, payments to our current online payment

facility will cease. You will not be able to use the Department of Education’s Parent Online

Payment (POP) system until Wednesday 6 September.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we transition to our new finance system. If you

have any questions, please contact the school on 6653 3077.

Regards

Mr Paul Humphrey

Principal
