Another Change - the Academic Structure of Senior Secondary EducationBy Dr . Chan K.P .
Dro,xtp WAilDELIA MEMORIAL SCHOOL(BROADWAY)
News Letter
ISSUE NO.5Feb-2004
Education Commission inHong Kong has recentlypublished a documentcalled "Review of theAcademic Structure ofSenior SecondaryEducation" which putsforward the idea of a 3-yearsenior secondary academicstructure (i .e . 3 years of
junior secondary and 3 years of seniorsecondary) to replace the existing "5+2"structure (i .e . 5 years of secondary and 2years of pre-university) .
The philosophy behind the change is tofacilitate the development of a more flexiblecross-discipline curriculum so that studentswill be able to widen their horizon andconsolidate their knowledge base through amore coherent and diversified seniorsecondary education . It is expected that thenew structure will be implemented before theend of this decade . Despite the fact that thereare still a few more years for the change tocome, this change is a major one not only inschool level since it involves the changes inschool's subsidizing and administrativemeasures like Direct Subsidy Scheme beinglaunched in the previous decade as well asthe School Self Evaluation this year, but also
in classroom level such as style and contentof teaching for teachers as well as of learningfor students .
To name a concrete example, new P .6students in the coming September mayprobably be taking 11 lessons of a subjectcalled Liberal Studies which surely soundsstrange for most people at the frontline ofeducation in Hong Kong . The worst, ifeducators still try to keep themselves in theshell, is that a quarter of Hong Kong teacherswho have not been teaching the subject willbe asked to take up Liberal Studies in school .
Albert Einstein once said, "If the factsdon't fit the theory, change the facts ." WinstonChurchill also shared with the great scientistwhen he claimed, "A fanatic is one who can'tchange his mind and won't change thesubject ." I believe our teachers are proactiveenough to equip themselves before the newchange strikes us . This has been verifiedrecently in the Language Benchmark so thatwe can become one of the ten schools thatall language teachers meet the benchmarkrequirement . I also believe in our schoolorganizers that they can bring us through justlike the way we make full use of DSS policy .Then, the only person who can help us ensurethe smooth transition is YOU .
Are you ready for the change ahead?

I have joined Delia Memorial School (Broadway)in 2003/2004 after obtaining my Postgraduate Diplomain Education in Hong Kong. Having attended both thelocal St . Joseph's Primary School and St. Joseph'sCollege, I went overseas for higher education and wasawarded a Bachelor Degree from Canada .
With my family background closely associatedwith local education, I gave up my original career tobecome a qualified teacher, wishing to contributing toeducation instead, in particular for the less privilegedgroup in Hong Kong, as I am in fact very concernedabout the educational progress of youngsters who mayneed more caring in school activities and learning .
This year we have nine new teachers, three maleand six female . Let' s tell you more about them.
Dear All,I am Miss Sze, a Maths and Commerce teacher
in this school . Most of you may not know who I amand please let me take this golden opportunity tointroduce myself.
I was graduated from the Chinese University ofHong Kong. Last summer I was offered to be a Mathstutor in Delia, during the tutorial, I see a lot ofenthusiasmfrom you and I was deeply impressed . I am very gladjoining the Delia family and I will try my best to helpyou all exceed your academic goal!

In September, 60 teachers and students joinedthe "Adventure Ship" . Students learn to overcomepsychological hindrance, face challenge, and nevergive up . Then they can get confidence . They alsounderstand the importance of care, support andencouragement .
In October, our school has raised about $16300 inCommunity Chest Fund Raising (about $20/person) . It wasthe highest record among five Delia DSS Schools, and 250students joined the street flag sale . Moreover, we also helpother organizations to sell flag . We also visit elderly people, children, blind people, physical challengepeople centers . The following photosshowed that our students performed inCarnival of Anderson Club in Lamma Island .
On the other hand, we provide moremulti-cultural activities because ofincreased non-Chinese speaking students .There was a "yDiwali Celebration" in theend of October . Teachers had participatedin the Fashion Show, so charming!
In November, 30 students (S3 & S4) joined the "YouthLeadership Training Project" . We provided a series ofworkshops including self-understanding, communicationskills, peers support, and leadership skills . Some photosshowed the conditions in "Leadership Training Camp" .
We successfully applied for the "Citisuccess Fund" toorganize the "Colourful New GenerationIntegration Scheme" . It helped newly arrived
non-Chinese speaking students toadapt to local culture through a seriesof activities . The following photosshowed that students participated indifferent activities and Multi-cultureUnion Camp.
Whenever scouts hear this command, they fall in lines and wait for instructions .Our scout group offers diferent activities for its members from indoor games to
outdoor pionnering, hiking and camping . Scouts members acquire plenty of knowledge .Come and join us . All are welcome . .
The closing ceremony (2002-03) was heldat the University Hall in Baptist University . Aslide show reviewed the school life of the S .5& S.7 graduates . It was so touching that someof them could not help shedding tears .
May we wish all graduates happy and abright future .
