With a subscription, users can record conferences and personalized greetings for conferences. In case you need some cocktail party trivia, FreeConference claims it now serves well over one billion minutes a year of all-digital conference calls.

• NEC recently announced plans for UNIVERGE Cloud Services UCaaS, yet another UC provider positioning its technologies for the cloud. The UNIVERGE Unified Communications as a Service (UCaaS) suite is a complete grouping of voice, data and video services that include a Web-based end-user client that can be deployed across any device including a PC, smartphone or tablet. Launch is scheduled for later this year.

• At Enterprise Connect, Avaya introduced the Collaborative Cloud, a strategic framework for delivering communications and collaboration applications and services to businesses through public, private and hybrid cloud models. The company also announced the AvayaLive suite of public-cloud delivered solutions, including the new AvayaLive Connect solution and the enhanced AvayaLive Engage. The Avaya Collaborative Cloud framework is designed to enable its customers, channel partners, service providers, and developers to use, build, deliver and enhance cloud collaboration solutions based on Avaya applications, platforms and infrastructure. AvayaLive Connect is a new, integrated UC solution for small businesses that includes voice, voice conferencing, messaging, video, mobility, presence, and other capabilities. The solution supports PC, Apple Mac, iOS and Android devices, multiple offices, and is designed to be ordered, downloaded and accessed through the Web. AvayaLive Connect is currently in trials and is planned for general availability in the U.S. market by mid-2012. AvayaLive Engage is a rebranding and updating of Avaya’s web.alive, a Web-based, immersive collaboration environment that WR profiled last year; Engage adds new features such as support for Apple Mac OSX operating

systems and Safari browsers; video collaboration and conferencing; video streaming, sharing, and synchronized playback; and enhanced collaboration tools. Around the same time Avaya announced for enterprise-grade private or hybrid clouds, businesses and cloud service providers can use the Avaya Virtual Enterprise Network Architecture (VENA) and Avaya Aura as the foundation. Avaya VENA enables enterprises or hosting companies to deploy a standards-based private cloud infrastructure that can be extended enterprise-wide from the data center all the way to the desktop. Avaya Aura provides the core communications platform to centralize and deliver UC and contact center applications. Avaya Communications Outsourcing Solutions can also be provided to enterprises as a private, managed cloud service. As if that’s not enough, Avaya also announced at EC its plan to establish a strategic relationship with Level 3 Communications in support of the AvayaLive Connect solution in the U.S. And in other news, Private equity firms TPG Capital and Silver Lake Partners (no surprise there) have said they intend to fund most of the $227 million Avaya will be spending to purchase RADVISION (while using the $90.7 million on hand at RADVISION as well).

• Also at Enterprise Connect, Cisco Systems rolled out improvements to both its Jabber IM presence / videoconferencing product and its Telepresence line. Cisco announced its first version of Jabber for the iPad and an upgrade of Jabber for Windows desktop and laptop PCs, as Jabber has become a universal client for Cisco interactive technologies, including WebEx. The company also introduced a new high end telepresence system called TX9000,

and that it is expanding the depth of integration between Jabber and its telepresence line. The TX9000 is a new three-screen immersive telepresence platform that combines telepresence with advanced collaboration and content sharing capabilities. The TX9000 integrates with WebEx, enabling “one-touch simplicity” as the company puts it for scheduling and starting WebEx and Telepresence integrated meetings. Future capabilities will support adding WebEx ad hoc to any Telepresence call using the Cisco TelePresence Touch interface. Cisco indicated that the TX9000 can support 1080p, 60 fps video while data sharing capabilities support 1080p, 30 fps. The TX9000 provides interoperability support for SIP, BFCP, H.264 and Telepresence Interoperability Protocol (TIP). Back to the issue of Jabber and its role: many in the media already have weighed in on the inevitable clash of the titans: Microsoft Lync with Skype vs. Jabber, which is now offered as a free client for point-to-point calls only.

• And Polycom had plenty of announcements at Enterprise Connect, introducing two new interoperable solutions with HP and Microsoft that combine Polycom RealPresence video solutions, HP Networking technology and services, and Microsoft Lync with joint reference architectures. The solutions are meant to reduce the time and resources required to create and maintain an end-to-end UC and video collaboration environment. The two solutions can be delivered in one of two ways: 1) the HP and Polycom Rich Media Communications solution, which combines Polycom RealPresence video solutions and various video systems with HP Networking technology and services to deliver high-quality video collaboration across the enterprise; and 2) the HP AppSystem for Microsoft Lync with Polycom RealPresence Video, for environments built on the Microsoft Lync UC platform. This solution is based on HP Converged Infrastructure that combines tailored HP networking, storage, servers, and services into a readily-scalable platform for a complete UC solution across IM, presence, voice and video conferencing. Customers can incorporate Polycom RealPresence video solutions as a pre-integrated platform. (Polycom also added Microsoft Lync interoperability through Polycom’s CX product line.)

• Logitech has introduced a product meant to fill the gap between a simple webcam and a group videoconferencing system: a new “portable” videoconferencing peripheral, the BCC950

ConferenceCam. More expensive than a low-end webcam, the ~$250 ConferenceCam blends a pan-tilt-zoon (PTZ) HD webcam and speakerphone in one unit, which attaches to a PC or Mac via USB. Meant to support mobile workers and constantly changing workgroups, the idea seems to us to be about creating the ability to create a mini-group video experience on an ad hoc basis. It can be used with Skype or Microsoft Lync and can become a node in a videoconference involving third-party systems such as Cisco TelePresence, Avaya’s Aura communications platform and Logitech’s LifeSize product line. The camera is capable of 1080p video capture at 30 frames per second. It has an integrated, omnidirectional microphone that can capture audio from 360 degrees around the base unit, plus a small built-in speaker.

• Yorktel has been busy on many fronts. First, the company has purchased First Connections, Ltd., based in the UK, to help grow its footprint first established in 2006 and expanded upon in 2012. First Connections is headquartered in Basingstoke, UK, with eight locations in the UK and Ireland. First Connections brings 15 years of experience in audio / visual solutions, private video networking, video streaming, and integration. This announcement was made just a week or so after Applied Global Technologies (AGT) and Yorktel announced a partnership to enable Yorktel to embed AGT’s mobile video conferencing solutions within its new and existing service offerings. The alliance is two-fold, allowing Yorktel to sell to its customers a mobile video conferencing gateway that attaches to existing Cisco and Polycom infrastructures, in addition to enabling Yorktel’s Cloud-based service via mobile video conferencing apps. This builds upon

Yorktel’s previously (January) unveiled Video Cloud Connect+ managed services offering, which includes AGT’s ENCORE Mobile Pathway Protocol to support interoperability. Through this partnership, AGT also will provide Yorktel-branded apps that will be available in the Mac App store.

• Matrix Video Communications has selected Vidtel’s MeetMe Video Conferencing Service. Matrix will deliver Vidtel’s cloud-based service to its SMB customers in Western Canada.

• Telesphere has introduced a new Web collaboration service that enables multi-user HD audio and video conferencing, transfer and storage of files, and other functions that enable successful meetings, webinars and training sessions for business. Telesphere’s WebConnect is accessible anywhere a participant has Internet connectivity using any standard web browser. It is also integrated with applications such as Outlook for both Windows and Mac, and business and social networks, including Salesforce.com, YouTube, Facebook and others. In addition to conferencing that allows up to 9 simultaneous participants via video and up to 300 by audio, features of WebConnect include the ability to import video materials in a variety of formats, including live streaming video; synchronized Web streaming; support for multiple languages; closed captioning; password-protected logons and end-to-end encryption.

• BCSGlobal Networks has announced iViewReplay, a new feature for its mobile enterprise video services suite that builds on its iView — Powered by Vidyo service. iViewReplay allows users to record and webcast their video meetings and watch them later on demand. Users of iView — Powered by Vidyo can record and webcast video conferences conducted from their mobile video endpoints, including laptops, desktops, smartphones and tablets powered by iOS and Android. The iViewReplay service is meant to turn every iView — Powered by Vidyo endpoint into a “content creation station.”

• Implix has announced that its ClickMeeting and ClickWebinar online collaboration solutions are now available on iPad, Android and Blackberry PlayBook devices.

• The ever evolving Adobe has blogged that Adobe Connect reached a milestone, delivering more than 3 billion minutes of web conferencing services on its hosted platform in 2011 (and this does not count premise-based deployments of Connect). While WR’s Marc Beattie can tell you how many billions of minutes every major provider achieved last year — and Adobe is a top tier player — that number is indeed impressive. Even more interesting, Adobe has indicated that accesses of its hosted Connect service from mobile devices were (and we think this is put curiously): “more than double those from Linux or UNIX-based platforms.”

Three New Free White Papers: Driving Blended Learning Adoption, Impact of Broadcast and Streaming Video, and Video Collaboration in the Cloud

Blended Learning Technology: Navigating the Challenges of Large-Scale Adoption, sponsored by Echo360, discusses how to align lecture capture with strategic organizational goals. Based on in-depth interviews with Qatar University, George Washington University, University College

London, Monash University, and Wayne State University, the paper offers ten advisory approaches for overcoming the major obstacles to adoption.

The Impact of Broadcast and Streaming Video in Education is a meta-study, based on more than 80 sources of research, that outlines the advantages of broadcast and streaming video as an effective tool for accelerating learning in the 21st century. Sponsored by Cisco Systems, the

paper describes the impact of these video technologies in improving high-quality learning, and shares best practices.

Video Collaboration in the Cloud, sponsored by Deutsche Telekom, shows how easy-to-use cloud-based services featuring video interoperability between room systems, Skype, Lync, and Google are enabling improved internal business collaboration as well as B2B and B2C communications. A

cloud-based deployment model also provides financial flexibility, shorter time to market and can dramatically improve the risk/reward ratio for business managers.

• KRM, a full services, turnkey support organization for clients putting on public webinars and webcasts, has selected relative newcomer omNovia to be its webinar solutions partner. KRM provides web technology, phone bridges, payment processing, operators, moderators, and other capabilities so that its clients can focus purely on content.

• Mozilla is reportedly working on a free, browser-based videoconferencing service that uses a custom WebRTC API that Mozilla is building for Firefox, along with HTML5 canvas to render both local and remote videos on the Web page. The service is still in the very early development stages and was demonstrated at an IETF event in Paris in late March.

• Meanwhile, we can’t make this stuff up (except on April 1). YouDazzle has launched an online collaboration tool that uses a “multi-level,” network marketing business model (think Avon or health boosters where your neighbor sells to you and you sell to someone else and you all get rich). Consultants pay a one-time fee of $49 to “enroll” and for marketing materials and then can begin earning revenue on sales of YouDazzle to their network contacts. The service includes screensharing, web meeting, virtual presentation tool, data room provider and Dropbox client all in one, with tiered pricing levels based on user needs.

• AppNeta, a provider of cloud-based network performance management services, announced the launch of AppView Video, a new module for its PathView Cloud performance management service. AppView Video enables network engineers and IT teams to verify the quality of videoconference network services before and during calls, generating video, audio and signaling portions of the conference, with full support for QoS on all three traffic classes. PathView Cloud with AppView Video quickly determines end-to-end network readiness for videoconferencing.

• In case you ever need more examples of the uses of UC&C, note that Asian Age has reported that 120 Somalian pirates currently in jail in India will face trial via videoconferencing, saving on the use of six vans and 40 personnel and eliminating some security concerns.

Two New Wainhouse Research Analysts Rounding out the TeamTwo new senior analysts — each well known in various corners of the UC&C industry — have joined the Wainhouse Research team, and we’ve made it easy for you to remember them: welcome Steve and Stefan.

Steve Vonder Haar is our new senior analyst focusing on enterprise streaming and webcasting. Steve has covered the technology industry for more than 20 years, most recently serving as Research Director of Interactive Media Strategies — an analyst firm that tracked the market

for enterprise streaming & webcasting. At Interactive Media Strategies Steve authored numerous reports and produced many Webcasts that addressed trends shaping the adoption of online audio and video in business communications. Previously, Steve worked as Director of the Media and Entertainment Strategies group for the Yankee Group, and worked as a technology industry reporter for a range of industry and general publications. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri Columbia with dual degrees in Journalism and Economics, and holds a Masters degree in Business Administration from the University of Texas-Arlington. Steve is located in Arlington, TX and can be reached at [email protected].

Buckle up. The social media frenzy is about to kick into overdrive

As Facebook gears up for its long-anticipated initial public stock offering later this year, the chatter around social offerings from the likes of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and dozens of other developers will become more pervasive than ever before.

Don’t believe me? Well just look at the stir Facebook caused earlier this month by telling the world it would list its shares on the Nasdaq stock exchange. If this type of administrative decision causes a media commotion, you’ll need a machete to cut through the hype that will ensue when Facebook actually gets around to selling its stock.

Having joined Wainhouse Research in the past month to add to its coverage of the worlds of enterprise webcasting and streaming, I’m naturally watching the social media parade with great interest. At first, you might think that I would be troubled by all the attention paid to the social media space. After all, every word written about social media and every minute spent contemplating the impact of the technology would seem to push consideration of online audio and online video out of the spotlight and to the sidelines.

But nothing could be further from the truth.

Siemens. Stefan holds a M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Chemnitz University of Technology in Germany, and an MBA from Santa Clara University in California. Stefan is located in San Jose, CA and can be reached at [email protected].

Integrators (FSIs) and commercial opportunities in the Washington, DC region and beyond.

WRB: What is Collaborative Telepresence?

MS: Collaborative telepresence is traditional telepresence or video-conferencing combined with the much-required feature of sharing data. We add a stunning display surface with advanced source handling and ergonomics to make an extraordinary decision-making tool. Traditional telepresence solutions do not share data in the most effective manner. Cyviz allows users to have single as well as dual display sharing. We can send dual HD data channels to any H.323 endpoint. This means a customer running an application, live satellite feed, or spreadsheet can ‘share’ a single or dual HD channel while engaging in a videoconference for total collaborative telepresence.

WRB: Most of us never heard of Cyviz. Briefly, what is the company all about?

MS: Cyviz is totally focused on collaborative telepresence (CTP) and command and control solutions. We started selling to the Oil and Gas sector 13 years ago and have now branched out into the Federal Government, Defense, Life Sciences, Education and Manufacturing sectors. We offer solutions that deliver a Common Operating Environment (COE), are scalable using a unique building block approach, and that are intended to be simple to deploy, operate and maintain. All of our display solutions are controlled from a single desktop PC up to resolutions of almost 33 megapixels. Our headquarters is in Stavanger, Norway with three additional offices in Dubai, Houston, TX and Washington, DC. Since oil hasn’t yet been discovered under the Potomac River, the CTC DC focuses on the Federal government, Federal System

That’s because developers in the online world look at audio and video differently than most others. To them, audio and video are not media. Rather, they see them as different types of data that can enhance the online communications experience. As developers, their job is to create software that leverages audio and video to create applications that generate business benefit.

Viewed in this perspective, the coming social media frenzy will be great for the enterprise webcasting and streaming sector. After all, social media is nothing more than a catchy term that describes the development of online software solutions that enables more efficient forms of information exchange and communications.

Indeed, one could call YouTube applications that streamlined the way users share video online as the grand-daddy of today’s social media world. Moving forward, the intelligent integration of audio and video

capabilities is a logical extension for virtually any social platform vying for mindshare in today’s increasingly crowded market.

And don’t think the rise of social media has escaped the notice of vendors in the enterprise Webcasting space. Many platforms already bake in tools that simplify the process of promoting videos on social media networks. Some vendors, such as Kaltura, have been particularly aggressive in promoting their social media functionality. And other services, like NetBriefings, are preparing solutions that literally will make it possible to record and share videos across a range of social platforms at the click of a button.

So I say bring on the hype. Social media doesn’t steal the spotlight. Instead, it sets the stage for better software that builds a bigger role for online video in both internal and external corporate communications.

NextPlane - Federation in the CloudThis research note details interoperability challenges between disparate UC vendor solutions, and NextPlane’s cloud based solution intended to address these challenges.

WRB: So is videoconferencing an integral part of your solution?

MS: We feel videoconferencing is an important part of CTP because it is people who communicate with each other to share data. While some of our solutions do not include videoconferencing, the majority of our solutions do. We started working with Tandberg (now Cisco) about three years ago. During this time our design team worked hand-in-hand with the C60/C90 team in Norway to take the Tandberg API and integrate with the Cyviz Display Controller software. Once the CDC software is installed, it will control the C60/C90 fully without any additional programming.

WRB: Who are your customers?

MS: Our customers include Chevron, StatOil, Department of Energy, US Army, Navy, and Air Force, Lockheed Martin, NIH, Children’s National Medical Center (CNMC), Volvo, and Procter & Gamble. The Federal or government sector is our fastest growing one now accounting for nearly 25% of our overall business up from less than 5% three years ago.

WRB: Do you sell direct? Who are your partners?

MS: We sell only through the channel; we work only

with a select group as our resellers need to have the right mindset, technical ability, and resources. On the Federal side, we have a distributor / aggregator who holds our GSA schedule named Immix Group. This means all of our Federal business goes through Immix. Cyviz works with some of the largest resellers in the industry as well as with smaller, more focused regional resellers.

WRB: I have to ask. Who are your competitors?

MS: Cyviz offers a complete CTP and command and control solution. This is compared with our competitors who offer parts of a solution. Companies like Jupiter and RGB spectrum provide video processing hardware. AMX and Creston will provide programmable interfaces, and Barco and Christie provide displays. These manufacturers offer only parts of the puzzle.

WRB: Lastly, what are the major challenges facing Cyviz?

MS: We have been focused on engineering for the last 13 years. However, our biggest problem today is that a number of potential customers don’t know about us.
