The Peak Fire in Chatsworth Tuesday, and the current Lake Fire currently blazing near Lake Hughes, point out that fire season has exploded with the high temperatures and low humidity. Cal Fire Chief Lucas Spelman has told Valley News Group in a previous article that in California now, fire season is “all year long.”

L.A. Fire Department and insurance experts like Tim Gaspar are urging residents to clear all defensible space, have an emergency plan and be prepared. For more tips on how to be prepared, like copying important documents, keeping a ready evacuation bag and more, visit www.ready.gov.

Boys will be boys and explore outside and play in the dirt. For two local brothers, that childhood wandering has turned into a successful business. Woodland Hills natives Justin and Shawn Dunn have launched Shroomshot - mushroom-based probiotic wellness shots.

It all started with Shawn’s passion for foraging for wild plants and fungi while in college. “I’d find things like berries, currents, prickly pear cactus, olives and more,” he told Valley News Group. “Some I researched were for medicinal use, others for culinary endeavors. The first mushrooms I found were Turkey Tail mushrooms, but traveling through California I also found oyster, Lion’s Mane and chanterelles - all edible.”

That passion led to a partnership with Justin, an investor and entrepreneur, to form an easy-to-consume product that would deliver the health benefits of mushrooms.

Nevertheless, the question remains, should you send your mail-in ballot as it comes - third class without a stamp, or throw your own stamp on it to make sure it arrives in time to be counted?

The best argument is to skip the mail altogether, and hand deliver it early to a polling place near you.

Why are we talking about ballots in August, when the election is in November?

Because politics are front and center right now with the Republican and Democratic conventions. They’re in the news nationally, and locally, as you can see from the Calabasas news on our front cover.

And honestly, November isn’t that far away.

Mail in ballots will be delivered to the Post Office October 5, according to elections official Miranda Nobriga. Because of the pandemic they will be sent to all registered voters in California this year whether you signed up for a mail in ballot or not.

So it’s even easier now to cast your vote.

Coronavirus has changed many things about our lives, and voting is one. You now have a choice on how you can. Uncomfortable going to a polling place and standing in line with other people? Vote by mail or simply drop your ballot off.

Every October we run a legal ad from the county listing all the local polling locations. This year we’ll put it front and center – not just in six-point type but right up front where everyone can find

Three Key Steps To Selling A Business In Good Times Or BadThe COVID-19 pandemic

is putting people out of work, slowing down lots of industries, and causing businesses to close. But at the same time, an uncertain chapter in America’s economic history may provide opportunities for individuals looking for a fresh start - or a soft landing.

Nearly half of small business owners in the U.S. are 65 and older, and a good number are considering selling their business rather than putting their resources and energy into bouncing back from the recession. But isn’t an economic downturn an inopportune time to sell a business?

Not necessarily, says Terry Monroe, founder and president of American Business Brokers & Advisors (ABBA) and author of Hidden Wealth: The Secret to Getting Top Dollar for Your Business.

“Some think due to the current difficult times many businesses are having that they wouldn’t be able to get a reasonable sale price,” Monroe says. “And they worry that they’ll have to delay retirement for several years because of COVID-19. But the reality is, there are lots of people, including the unemployed, looking to reinvent themselves and for a chance to run their own

business. Investors with plenty of money are always around looking for good opportunities. The baby boomers who own many of these businesses are burned out and want to get out. But small business owners in general often

don’t realize all that is required to achieve a successful sale. Done the right way, selling can result in owners walking away feeling they got good value for all they put into their business.”

Monroe says owners should think about the following factors when considering putting their business on the block:•Askyourselfwhy.“Selling a business can initially

be an emotional consideration, but one has to drill down to the reality of why they want to sell and why it would make sense,” Monroe says. “Burnout is a common reason. If it’s affecting health or company performance, it’s time to get out. Another common factor is the inability to expand when necessary - the

Don’t over-focus on the price. What you should focus on is how much you would put in your pocket when the sale is complete.”

Valley Village makes a “home away from home” for adults with developmental disabilities.

At the village they are able to learn, play, sing, dance, create and live a life otherwise unimagined.

Now those adults - like the rest of the world - are stuck at home without the services the non-profit can offer them.

Gearing up for the time when their amazing staff can again help protect, foster, develop and advance the rights of this unique group, Valley Village is holding a “couch concert” fundraiser on Thursday, September 10.

Music is a key component of Valley Village Day Programs, and participants look forward to that special time, so it is only fitting that American Idol contestant, Golden Ticket winner and Valley Village music teacher Juno Rada will perform from 5:30 to 7 pm on Zoom.

This concert will feature song requests from attendees. You can help select the music that Rada will perform during the concert. For just $5, you can

request a song from his list. Rada is taking a limited number of requests, and they are on a first-come, first-served basis. When you select your sponsorship level, complete the form with your song requests. If you’re purchasing an individual ticket, just add the option for a song request and

complete the song request form. You can select requests from an array of artists – Prince, Maroon 5, The Beatles, Justin Timberlake, and many more. Include your top three choices from his list - you can even make a dedication.

Weathercaster Fritz Coleman will guest host the concert. Sponsorships are open until September 1; concert tickets available up to concert time. Individual tickets are $20 per person and available at valleyvillage.org/special-events/.

Juno Rada will perform September 10 for Valley Village.

“COVID-TOES” is believed to be a symptom of the new coronavirus sweeping the world. Not as commonly identified, this may be largely overlooked among lesser-known symptoms referred to as COVID-19 skin conditions. Dermatologists around the world are gathering data on what may actually be earlier onset skin conditions. They have observed rashes, hives, and blisters at times preceding the familiar symptoms of the new coronavirus.

Since there is considerable lapse time between transmission of the virus and overt symptoms generally thought to be between eight and 14 days, the patient may or may not be aware of changes in the condition of the skin. People can also transmit the coronavirus days before they themselves show signs of sickness. This is what scientists call “presymptomatic transmission.”

Perhaps most notable of

skin disorders related directly to coronavirus outbreak is the aforementioned COVID-toes symptom - a frostbite-like condition nicknamed COVID-toes. A few hundred cases of this affliction have been recorded characterized by purple, bruise-like bumps – registry for which is kept by the American Academy of Dermatology.

Despite its name, and links with authentic cases on the books, its ultimate determination has NOT been authenticated, simply because many people with the distinctive condition haven’t been tested for COVID-19 because they are not sick enough to require intensive medical attention.

Those persons who develop suspicious-looking new skin outbreaks (as described in this article) may have a reason to self isolate.

Local Firefighters Honored by Burn Center Firefighters injured in the May explosion in a downtown fire were

reunited last week with the doctors and nurses who helped them recover. The Grossman Burn Center at West Hills Hospital celebrated the recovery of those firefighters, who were all released from the hospital by the end of July. The event was attended by L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti, Councilmen Bob Blumenfield and John Lee, and Dr. Peter Grossman, Medical Director of the Burn Center. Grossman Burn Center is a plastic surgery-based medical center in West Hills specializing in comprehensive burn treatment - from acute care and reconstruction, to rehabilitation and psychological counseling.

Pure Water Demonstration Facility to Open in Calabasas The Las Virgenes-Triunfo

Joint Powers will open their Pure Water Demonstration Facility on September 11 at 10 am.

The plant will test out the equipment that will ultimately be used in the full scale Advanced Water Treatment Plant. This will allow the district to optimize the treatment process by right-sizing the equipment, verifying which technologies and equipment

manufacturers will provide the best value for the money.

The ultimate goal is to recycle water back into the drinking water system, and not discharge excess down Malibu Creek, as it has since the 1950’s.

The ribbon cutting ceremony on September 11 will have Senator Henry Stern as the keynote speaker, followed by a virtual tour of the facility.

Because it will be a virtual tour, there is no need to register. If you would like to receive a commemorative drinking glass prior to the grand opening, call Dawn Buchanan at (818) 251-2108 or email [email protected] and provide an address.

To attend the virtual tour the dial 1 (669) 990 6833; the webinar ID is 9175269 0016.

Killing Germs That Can Kill You - On Things You Never Thought Of

We wear masks. We wash our hands.

But what about all the germs on items we use everyday?

According to University of Arizona researchers, your cell phone has 10 times the germs of a toilet seat.

Makes you think?Now there’s a quick, easy

way to sanitize your phone, keys, masks, glasses and more - any small thing that attracts a big amount of germs.

The Travelon Multi-Function Sanitizer is small enough to fit in your hand, but powerful enough to sanitize your phone in two to three minutes.

According to Mark Stern, owner of Savinar Luggage in Canoga Park, the Travelon uses UV wavelengths to kill 99% of germs on objects placed inside.

It uses two professional grade germicidal UV-C lights with 360 degree coverage. The USB adaptor allows you to plug it in and sanitize from anywhere - your home, office or car.

It fits most mobile phones with screens up to 6.5 inches. (Actual size of device is 4.8 x 1.8 x 8.85 inches and weighs less than a pound.)

“This item started off as a popular tool for travelers,” said Stern. “But with coronavirus we can’t keep them on the shelves. Everyone wants to be safe and sanitize whatever they touch - or anyone else may touch.”

The Travelon is in stock at Savinar and retails for $45 in store (also online at savinarlugguage.com for $49.99 with free

shipping). Check out the latest in protection against contagious germs at Savinar Luggage, 6931 Topanga Canyon Blvd., Canoga Park. For more information call (818) 703-1313 and ask for Mark.

On the westside? Visit Savinar Luggage at 4625 W. Washington Blvd. or call (323) 938-2501 and ask for Joey.

Pick up a free luggage tag when you visit either store!

REAL ESTATE Just in Time for Fall Planting - Free Compost is Back!

The Las Virgenes-Triunfo JPA is proud to announce the return of the popular community compost giveaway program beginning this Saturday, August 29, 8 am to 1 pm, by appointment.

Residents and land-scapers are once again invited back to the Rancho Las Virgenes Composting Facility, following proper safety protocols.

The return of the high-quality soil amendment comes nearly two years after the District’s composting facility sustained significant damage from the Woolsey Fire. Staff have worked diligently to repair and replace the complex machinery needed to create the Grade-A compost.

The JPA has also tested the soil amendment for the novel coronavirus, and has found

that it does not exist in the compost, ensuring its safety to the public and its usage.

In adhering to current safety

and social distancing measures due to COVID-19, all customers will be required to observe the following conditions:

• Customers are required to wear a mask at all times. No

exceptions.• Customers are required to

practice social distancing by keeping at least six feet between

themselves and others.• Customers must

bring their own shovel to collect compost.

• Customers must bring a valid ID.

• No more than six customers should be at the compost pile at one time.

• Customers must make a reservation on the District’s website or by calling Dawn Buchanan at (818) 251-2108. Reservations are

limited in order to allow for social distancing and ensure the safety of customers and staff. Customers who are seen not adhering to the above safety protocols will be asked by District staff to leave.

The City of Calabasas has begun the process of updating its long-term housing development policies. When completed, the new housing policies will comprise a specific chapter of the City’s overall General Plan, called the Housing Element. The new

housing policies must comply with state law, which includes a requirement for the City to plan for more than 350 new housing units.

As an important early step in preparing the new housing plan, the City is conducting an online survey to ask Calabasas

residents what they believe are the community’s most important housing needs. The survey includes 11 questions, and should take approximately five minutes to complete. The housing needs survey can be accessed via www.surveymonkey.com/r/HGC72ZL.

As dozens of wildfires continue to rage throughout California, measures by Senator Henry Stern (D-Calabasas) to help Californians reduce the likelihood of such blazes in the future and better protect themselves when wildfires ignite moved to the Assembly and Senate floors.

“Millions of acres of land have burned across the state in the past three years, and nearly 400,000 of those have gone up in smoke in just the past four days,” said Stern, chairman of the Senate Natural Resources & Water Committee. “As the events of this week have once again reminded us, we need to invest in fire prevention and protection just as much as we invest in battling these blazes.”

SB 1348, which passed the Assembly Appropriations Committee last week on a 13-4 vote, is an omnibus fire prevention and protection measure that, among other things:

- Requires CalFire to identify moderate and high severity fire zones;

- Directs the Building Standards Commission to extend its tough ignition-resistant building standards to cover moderate and high fire hazard severity zones;

- Authorizes CalFire to award grants to finance residential vegetation management pro-grams, including defensible space training, and public wildfire

resistance education outreach; and- Helps organizations and

trained volunteers in their fire prevention efforts by providing funding for them to assist people

or open their social media feed,” continued Stern. “The combination of extreme heat, wind, and drought-like conditions was a ticking time bomb waiting to be ignited. This week’s devastation has reminded us once again to focus our legislative efforts on fire preparation and prevention. SB 1348 will empower our communities to protect themselves from future fires. Going forward, much more investment and state action is direly needed to prepare for California’s seemingly endless fire season.”

AB 2213 (Limón-Stern), which passed the Senate Appropriations Committee on a bi-partisan 7-0 vote, makes it easier for fire officials to reach out to elderly Californians and those

Senators Henry Stern and Mike McGuire on the scene of recent fire devastation.

Senator Henry Stern Fights for More State Fire Resources

with defensible space and home hardening assessments.

The bill is supported by, among others, the City of Thousand Oaks, Napa Community Firewise Foundation, Pacific Forest Trust, and The Nature Conservancy.

“Anyone who doesn’t think climate change is real just needs to pick up a newspaper

manage that by putting together a team of professionals who will guide you through it.” The team should include an accountant, a mergers and acquisitions specialist, and an attorney, in that order, he says. “You’ll hear business owners brag about the money they saved in fees because they did the negotiations themselves, when in reality they ended up leaving considerable amounts of money on the table,” Monroe says.•Knowifyou’resellingtoolow.How do you know if you are selling too low? Do the research

before you decide to sell your business. “Finding out what a business like yours is selling for in the marketplace is not going to be very difficult in the internet age,” Monroe says. “In the end, you should confer with a professional who understands your industry and can provide data to find your business’ worth in the current climate. Don’t over-focus on the price. What you should focus on is how much you would put in your pocket when the sale is complete.”

is choose the least bad.” For now, distance learning, cancelling sports and holding meetings via Zoom are the least bad choices.

So we are distance learning for now. Some of the private schools have plans in place to come back just as soon as possible. Some of the public school principals may have that information, but haven’t shared it with staff. LAUSD has plans to test students and teachers. Some private schools plan to take temperatures every day. One of the things they have learned is that as hard as it was to shut down in March, at least the kids had already been with the teachers for a while and understood what was expected. Trying to start a new semester with an all-new group of kids is much more difficult. Computer systems were never meant to handle the volume of students online at the same time.

None of this is easy. Not for the governing bodies, the schools, students, parents or the teachers. What will happen to distance versus in-school learning remains to be seen. Like the rest of the pandemic world, it is one day at a time.

“No problem,” says Shawn. “Each drink is crafted with the highest quality wood-grown mushroom extracts - no more foraging for us! - plus 100% organic incredients and live probiotics.” Two blends are now available. Golden Immunity is made with Turkey Tail mushrooms, an immune powerhouse possessing a high number of beta-glucans that help stimulate your immune response and elevate wellness. The taste is bold and flavorful with pineapple and a kick of ginger, turmeric and black pepper. Mental Magic features Lion’s Man3 mushrooms, a well-studied variety well-known to improved cognitive performance, focus and mental retention. The taste is sweet blueberry with a splash of lemon.

Shroomshot is now a full-time gig for both brothers, and the shots are available for sale in the refrigerated sections of Erewhon, Larsen’s and Follow Your Heart health food stores. They can also be purchased online at www.shroomshot.com.
