Dear Wrangler Community
I wanted to thank the PTA and all parents for your support and involvement over the first weeks of school Whenever I am asked how things are going at SBMS I begin by saying how fortunate we are to have such a wonderful community of students and supportive parents I have several highlights and upcoming events to share for the 2012-13 school year
1 Student enrollment on the rise Our current enrollment is 937 students Grade level breakdown 6th Grade 306 7th Grade 304 and 8th Grade 327
2 Focus on Academics Our primary and most important focus at SBMS is to prepare our students for the challenges of higher learning and to help them become productive members of a global community As I visit classrooms and interact with our students I am confident that our students will make us proud in the near and distant future
3 Athletic seasons underway The 7th and 8th grade volleyball football and cross coun-try seasons have begun I encourage you to come out and support our Wranglers on the field court and cross country trails
4 Band performed at SVHS and marched in the Parade The SBMS band had an outstanding performance during halftime at the SVHS football game last week and showed off their marching skills in the Comal County Fair Parade on September 28
5 Cheer and Dance are showing their Wrangler Pride It would not be a football game without a great halftime show Our girls on the dance and cheer teams will be performing twice at every home game Make sure you do not miss out on seeing these two great groups perform
6 Seussical Musical The SBMS Theater and Choir have teamed up and have begun working on this wonderful production to be performed this fall You do not what to miss this
7 First PTA General Meeting PTA hosted its first general meeting on September 25 at 630 in the SBMS cafeteria Along with the regularly schedule business meeting the SBMS Administrative Team presented a short program on bullying at the middle school level
8 Wrangler Wrobotics The SBMS robotics club is hard at work preparing for their first competition at St Maryrsquos University on October 13

As a parent one of the greatest
areas of concern for me is inter-
net safety Most of us would not
allow a stranger in
our house with our
children yet when
our children use the
internet they can
have access to nu-
merous strangers ndash
and the strangers
have access to
them
So what can you
do It is the 21st
century after all
and our children
will need to know how to ma-
neuver through an every grow-
ing internet world The key is
balance ndash allowing your chil-
dren to use the internet but
putting in some parental pre-
cautions
Communicate with your child
and share your concern for
their safety Tell them up front
that you will be checking their
email Facebook texts etchellip
Let them know that you trust
them but it is others you canrsquot
trust Most children will grum-
ble about the idea of checking
their electronics but being open
and upfront will allow you and
your child to keep a positive
relationship and ultimately ndash
keep your child safe
The FBI recommends the fol-
lowing in regards to internet
safety
Communicate and talk to your
child about victimization and poten-
tial on-line danger
Spend time with
your children on-line
Have them teach you
about their favorite on-
line destinations
Keep the computer
in a common room in
the house not in your
childs bedroom It is
much more difficult for
a computer-sex of-
fender to communicate
with a child when the
computer screen is
visible to a parent or
another member of the
household
Utilize parental controls pro-
vided by your service provider and
or blocking software While elec-
tronic chat can be a great
place for children to make
new friends and discuss
various topics of interest
it is also prowled by com-
puter-sex offenders Use
of chat rooms in particu-
lar should be heavily
monitored While parents
should utilize these
mechanisms they should not totally
rely on them
Always maintain access to your
childs on-line account and ran-
domly check hisher e-mail Be
aware that your child could be con-
tacted through the US Mail Be up
front with your child about your ac-
cess and reasons why
Teach your child the responsible
use of the resources on-line There
is much more to the on-line experi-
ence than chat rooms
Find out what computer safe-
guards are utilized by your childs
public library and at the homes of
your childs friends These are all
places outside your normal supervi-
sion where your child could en-
counter an on-line predator
Understand even if your child
was a willing participant in any
form of exploitation that heshe is
not at fault and is the victim The
offender always bears the complete
responsibility for his or her actions
Instruct your children to never arrange a face-
to-face meeting with
someone they met on-
line to never upload (post)
pictures of themselves
onto the internet or on-
line service to people
they do not personally
know to never give out identi-
fying information such
as their name home ad-
dress school name or
telephone number to never respond to
messages or bulletin
board postings that are
suggestive obscene bel-
ligerent or harassing
Remember ndash parenting is a journey
ndash not a destination

Hello Wrangler Readers Your PTA has created a way for students and staff to share book reviews amp recommendations We are calling it the ldquoBook Nookrdquo A pick from one student in each grade as well as one staff member will appear in the newsletter It can sometimes be helpful to have a peer suggest a title or author when browsing in the library or bookstore There will be a ldquoBook Nookrdquo box in the library with slips for you to fill out Just write in your first name grade and the reason you recommend the book and place it in the box
Staff Pick Mr Smith is reading Teach Like a Champion by Doug Lemov He is reading this book because he wants to learn more about great teachers 6th grade Brandon read Young Samurai by Chris Bradford He wrote ldquoI like this book because itrsquos part of an action packed series about a boy named Jack Fletcher and itrsquos full of surprisesrdquo 7th grade Leaha read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins She wrote ldquoI like this book because it is a heart pounding adventure to surviverdquo 8th grade Cole read The First Mountain Man by William W Johnstone He wrote ldquoThis book was very interesting and it gave historical info about how people lived in the 1840rsquosrdquo
Special thanks to Mrs Romain Mrs Revell and Mr Smith for their support So pick up a book and tell us what you think Happy Reading
ldquoIf you can read this thank a teacherrdquo Anonymous Sincerely A PTA Book Worm

Childhood Health
Fall 2012 Page 15
Lets Talk Childhood Health
National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month Childhood obesity rates have tripled over the past 30 years Serving sizes have gone up as physical activity has gone down But now we are aware People are talking If you are new to the conversation heres the quick and dirty Childhood obe-sity is the result of an imbalance of energy - consuming an amount of calories that is greater than the amount of calories burned These extra calories turn into extra weight a child has to carry around But its not about weight Its about the present and future health problems that come with extra weight Extra weight puts kids at higher risk for heart dis-ease stroke and type 2 diabetes which up until recently was considered an adult illness Were aware now Twenty-three million kids and teens are overweight or obese If we dont act now today this month this year we could raise the first generation of kids that live shorter sicker lives than their parents
Health in School
Not Just a Class a Lifestyle Fifty-five million kids are enrolled in schools around our nation And these millions of kids are going to graduate from our schools with certain habits Its up to us to make sure they are good habits Physical Activity Kids spend about 1100 hours in school every year A majority of that time is spent sitting and that majority is growing as physical education and recess lose their footing in the school day With kids needing 60 minutes of physical activity a day we can learn to work movement into the school day and not out of it
Healthy Eating A child consumes up to 50 of their daily calories at school As a nation we have the power to make sure that the items that fill lunch trays and fall from vending machines are healthy More nutritious foods on campus means the healthy choice is the easy choice the convenient choice the choice our students will start to make on their own These articles are from httpwwwhealthiergenerationorg
In your childrsquos Physical Education Class we are journaling what we eatdrink weekly We discuss our journal entries every Monday and talk
about the Go Slow and Whoa foods for that week httpwwwnlmnihgovmedlineplusmagazineissuessummer07articlessummer07pg28html We will introduce healthy snacks and alternatives for healthy eating habits We appreciate your support with our endeavors Yours in Health Coach Glenn and Coach Hughes

dren to use the internet but
putting in some parental pre-
cautions
Communicate with your child
and share your concern for
their safety Tell them up front
that you will be checking their
email Facebook texts etchellip
Let them know that you trust
them but it is others you canrsquot
trust Most children will grum-
ble about the idea of checking
their electronics but being open
and upfront will allow you and
your child to keep a positive
relationship and ultimately ndash
keep your child safe
The FBI recommends the fol-
lowing in regards to internet
safety
Communicate and talk to your
child about victimization and poten-
tial on-line danger
Spend time with
your children on-line
Have them teach you
about their favorite on-
line destinations
Keep the computer
in a common room in
the house not in your
childs bedroom It is
much more difficult for
a computer-sex of-
fender to communicate
with a child when the
computer screen is
visible to a parent or
another member of the
household
Utilize parental controls pro-
vided by your service provider and
or blocking software While elec-
tronic chat can be a great
place for children to make
new friends and discuss
various topics of interest
it is also prowled by com-
puter-sex offenders Use
of chat rooms in particu-
lar should be heavily
monitored While parents
should utilize these
mechanisms they should not totally
rely on them
Always maintain access to your
childs on-line account and ran-
domly check hisher e-mail Be
aware that your child could be con-
tacted through the US Mail Be up
front with your child about your ac-
cess and reasons why
Teach your child the responsible
use of the resources on-line There
is much more to the on-line experi-
ence than chat rooms
Find out what computer safe-
guards are utilized by your childs
public library and at the homes of
your childs friends These are all
places outside your normal supervi-
sion where your child could en-
counter an on-line predator
Understand even if your child
was a willing participant in any
form of exploitation that heshe is
not at fault and is the victim The
offender always bears the complete
responsibility for his or her actions
Instruct your children to never arrange a face-
to-face meeting with
someone they met on-
line to never upload (post)
pictures of themselves
onto the internet or on-
line service to people
they do not personally
know to never give out identi-
fying information such
as their name home ad-
dress school name or
telephone number to never respond to
messages or bulletin
board postings that are
suggestive obscene bel-
ligerent or harassing

Keys
As a parent one of the greatest
areas of concern for me is inter-
net safety Most of us would not
allow a stranger in
our house with our
children yet when
our children use the
internet they can
have access to nu-
merous strangers ndash
and the strangers
have access to
them
So what can you
do It is the 21st
century after all
and our children
will need to know how to ma-
neuver through an every grow-
ing internet world The key is
balance ndash allowing your chil-
dren to use the internet but
putting in some parental pre-
cautions
Communicate with your child
and share your concern for
their safety Tell them up front
that you will be checking their
email Facebook texts etchellip
Let them know that you trust
them but it is others you canrsquot
trust Most children will grum-
ble about the idea of checking
their electronics but being open
and upfront will allow you and
your child to keep a positive
relationship and ultimately ndash
keep your child safe
The FBI recommends the fol-
lowing in regards to internet
safety
Communicate and talk to your
child about victimization and poten-
tial on-line danger
Spend time with
your children on-line
Have them teach you
about their favorite on-
line destinations
Keep the computer
in a common room in
the house not in your
childs bedroom It is
much more difficult for
a computer-sex of-
fender to communicate
with a child when the
computer screen is
visible to a parent or
another member of the
household
Utilize parental controls pro-
vided by your service provider and
or blocking software While elec-
tronic chat can be a great
place for children to make
new friends and discuss
various topics of interest
it is also prowled by com-
puter-sex offenders Use
of chat rooms in particu-
lar should be heavily
monitored While parents
should utilize these
mechanisms they should not totally
rely on them
Always maintain access to your
childs on-line account and ran-
domly check hisher e-mail Be
aware that your child could be con-
tacted through the US Mail Be up
front with your child about your ac-
cess and reasons why
Teach your child the responsible
use of the resources on-line There
is much more to the on-line experi-
ence than chat rooms
Find out what computer safe-
guards are utilized by your childs
public library and at the homes of
your childs friends These are all
places outside your normal supervi-
sion where your child could en-
counter an on-line predator
Understand even if your child
was a willing participant in any
form of exploitation that heshe is
not at fault and is the victim The
offender always bears the complete
responsibility for his or her actions
Instruct your children to never arrange a face-
to-face meeting with
someone they met on-
line to never upload (post)
pictures of themselves
onto the internet or on-
line service to people
they do not personally
know to never give out identi-
fying information such
as their name home ad-
dress school name or
telephone number to never respond to
messages or bulletin
board postings that are
suggestive obscene bel-
ligerent or harassing

public library and at the homes of
your childs friends These are all
places outside your normal supervi-
sion where your child could en-
counter an on-line predator
Understand even if your child
was a willing participant in any
form of exploitation that heshe is
not at fault and is the victim The
offender always bears the complete
responsibility for his or her actions
Instruct your children to never arrange a face-
to-face meeting with
someone they met on-
line to never upload (post)
pictures of themselves
onto the internet or on-
line service to people
they do not personally
know to never give out identi-
fying information such
as their name home ad-
dress school name or
telephone number to never respond to
messages or bulletin
board postings that are
suggestive obscene bel-
ligerent or harassing

Snorkeling in the Florida
Keys
As a parent one of the greatest
areas of concern for me is inter-
net safety Most of us would not
allow a stranger in
our house with our
children yet when
our children use the
internet they can
have access to nu-
merous strangers ndash
and the strangers
have access to
them
So what can you
do It is the 21st
century after all
and our children
will need to know how to ma-
neuver through an every grow-
ing internet world The key is
balance ndash allowing your chil-
dren to use the internet but
putting in some parental pre-
cautions
Communicate with your child
and share your concern for
their safety Tell them up front
that you will be checking their
email Facebook texts etchellip
Let them know that you trust
them but it is others you canrsquot
trust Most children will grum-
ble about the idea of checking
their electronics but being open
and upfront will allow you and
your child to keep a positive
relationship and ultimately ndash
keep your child safe
The FBI recommends the fol-
lowing in regards to internet
safety
Communicate and talk to your
child about victimization and poten-
tial on-line danger
Spend time with
your children on-line
Have them teach you
about their favorite on-
line destinations
Keep the computer
in a common room in
the house not in your
childs bedroom It is
much more difficult for
a computer-sex of-
fender to communicate
with a child when the
computer screen is
visible to a parent or
another member of the
household
Utilize parental controls pro-
vided by your service provider and
or blocking software While elec-
tronic chat can be a great
place for children to make
new friends and discuss
various topics of interest
it is also prowled by com-
puter-sex offenders Use
of chat rooms in particu-
lar should be heavily
monitored While parents
should utilize these
mechanisms they should not totally
rely on them
Always maintain access to your
childs on-line account and ran-
domly check hisher e-mail Be
aware that your child could be con-
tacted through the US Mail Be up
front with your child about your ac-
cess and reasons why
Teach your child the responsible
use of the resources on-line There
is much more to the on-line experi-
ence than chat rooms
Find out what computer safe-
guards are utilized by your childs
public library and at the homes of
your childs friends These are all
places outside your normal supervi-
sion where your child could en-
counter an on-line predator
Understand even if your child
was a willing participant in any
form of exploitation that heshe is
not at fault and is the victim The
offender always bears the complete
responsibility for his or her actions
Instruct your children to never arrange a face-

SBMS PTA Membership Chairman
As a parent one of the greatest
areas of concern for me is inter-
net safety Most of us would not
allow a stranger in
our house with our
children yet when
our children use the
internet they can
have access to nu-
merous strangers ndash
and the strangers
have access to
them
So what can you
do It is the 21st
century after all
and our children
will need to know how to ma-
neuver through an every grow-
ing internet world The key is
balance ndash allowing your chil-
dren to use the internet but
putting in some parental pre-
cautions
Communicate with your child
and share your concern for
their safety Tell them up front
that you will be checking their
email Facebook texts etchellip
Let them know that you trust
them but it is others you canrsquot
trust Most children will grum-
ble about the idea of checking
their electronics but being open
and upfront will allow you and
your child to keep a positive
relationship and ultimately ndash
keep your child safe
The FBI recommends the fol-
lowing in regards to internet
safety
Communicate and talk to your
child about victimization and poten-
tial on-line danger
Spend time with
your children on-line
Have them teach you
about their favorite on-
line destinations
Keep the computer
in a common room in
the house not in your
childs bedroom It is
much more difficult for
a computer-sex of-
fender to communicate
with a child when the
computer screen is
visible to a parent or
another member of the
household
Utilize parental controls pro-
vided by your service provider and
or blocking software While elec-
tronic chat can be a great
place for children to make
new friends and discuss
various topics of interest
it is also prowled by com-
puter-sex offenders Use
of chat rooms in particu-
lar should be heavily
monitored While parents
should utilize these
mechanisms they should not totally
rely on them
Always maintain access to your
childs on-line account and ran-
domly check hisher e-mail Be
aware that your child could be con-
tacted through the US Mail Be up
front with your child about your ac-
cess and reasons why
Teach your child the responsible
use of the resources on-line There
is much more to the on-line experi-
ence than chat rooms
Find out what computer safe-
guards are utilized by your childs
public library and at the homes of
your childs friends These are all
places outside your normal supervi-
sion where your child could en-
counter an on-line predator
Understand even if your child
was a willing participant in any
form of exploitation that heshe is
not at fault and is the victim The
offender always bears the complete
responsibility for his or her actions
Instruct your children to never arrange a face-
to-face meeting with
someone they met on-
line to never upload (post)
pictures of themselves
onto the internet or on-
line service to people
they do not personally
know to never give out identi-
fying information such
as their name home ad-
dress school name or
telephone number to never respond to
messages or bulletin
board postings that are
suggestive obscene bel-
ligerent or harassing
Remember ndash parenting is a journey
ndash not a destination
