Autumn 2015 Autumn 2015 New Look for Headway Bristol 2015 has been an exciting time for Headway Bristol – with the arrival of our new minibus, moving in to our amazing new facilities and our centre, outreach and support services continuing to expand. It was therefore felt that this would be an ideal time to launch a fresh new look by updating our existing logo. The rationale behind moving away from Headway UK’s logo was to reinforce the message that Headway Bristol has its own identity, and is an independent and autonomous charity. There is often a conflicting message sent to the public that Headway Bristol is the same charity as Headway UK. This can sometimes cause confusion when dedicated supporters fundraise for Headway UK instead of Headway Bristol – then they are upset and frustrated that the money they have worked hard to raise is not going towards our services. News We strongly believe that by having our own separate logo; it will strengthen our identity as an independent and autonomous charity and will limit this confusion. We are, of course, extremely proud of our affiliation to Headway UK and this will continue to be demonstrated by the Headway UK logo still being visible on all of our literature. Our new logo incorporates our 3 key colours – visually bringing together 3 core areas of Fundraising (purple), Carers and Support, Day Centres and Outreach (blue) and the HIYA! Group (teal). It also creatively uses our recognisable ovals as an abstract representation of the neurological pathways of the brain. We believe the added strapline ‘improving life after brain injury’ succinctly and effectively communicates our mission statement too. We hope you agree that this new logo is a positive and exciting change for Headway Bristol. Although we now have this fresh and exciting new look, our endless dedication and commitment to supporting those with brain injury, as well as their loved ones, families and carers remains unchanged. “I like it - it’s sharp and to the point!” - Hugh, Service User

New Look for Headway Bristol

2015 has been an exciting time for Headway Bristol – with the arrival of our new minibus, moving in to our amazing new facilities and our centre, outreach and support services continuing to expand.

News

We strongly believe that by having our own separate logo; it will strengthen our identity as an independent and autonomous charity and will limit this confusion.

ActivitiesA tour around Gloucestershire County Cricket Club

“I would like to say how much I enjoyed the visit to Gloucestershire Cricket Club this morning. The group was accompanied by a guide throughout the visit who answered all of our questions clearly and concisely.Because of this and the courteousness of the staff, I intend to take the family later in the season to either a game - or to the Madness concert which is due to take place there in September. The historical information was very interesting and I have learnt that the man who helped form the club (an amalgamation of Mangotsfield and West Gloucester C.C.) – it was built on its site due to land availability but retained the name Gloucestershire C.C. anyway. I also learned that the W.G part of Doctor Grace’s name stood for “William Gilbert” – a key pub quiz question.Anyway, in closing, I found it interesting and stimulating.”- Bruce, Service User

Hengrove Leisure Park Gym

On Thursday 10th October, the manager of Hengrove Leisure Park – Max- (Seen in photo on the right shaking hands with service user, Ricky) kindly organised a free gym induction session at their state-of-the-art gym. Danny, Barry, Ricky, Doug, Chris and Ruby enjoyed the session and we are looking forward to using the facilities on a regular basis during the winter months. Withywood outpost would like to say a big thank you to Hengrove Leisure Park’s generosity and inclusive nature.

This is me When you get to the top of your tree, say yes, this is meYou will get there, even in your darkest hour,You will feel , that you have the power,The thoughts and feelings that you thought you lost most,You will have now, so yes, you can boast, Take things easy, and it will happen in a while,Say yes, this is me, you will feel and have a great smile .

Case Study

On the 18 March 2014, my partner was involved in a Road Traffic Accident whilst travelling to work. He sustained a dissected carotid artery, two fractures to his neck and severe brain injury. My partner remained in a coma for 12 weeks. During this time I was living in the family room at the hospital, which was over 70 miles away from my family and too petrified to leave my partner’s bedside.Around 4 weeks after the accident I was advised by a nurse that someone from Headway Bristol would be visiting the ward and I asked if I could meet them. Headway Bristol respectfully advised me of the services they provide, gave me their contact details and told me to contact them any time.Initially Headway Bristol helped translate the medical terminology and provided a bit of an overview on brain injuries. The team also invited me to have a cup of coffee and offered a shoulder to cry on in the privacy of their offices. This support and kindness was invaluable to me, particularly being so far away from my family and having no prior knowledge of brain injuries.Over the course of the next three months the Headway Bristol team were my ‘go to people’. Everything I needed help and support with, they were there. They helped me understand the transfer from hospital to a brain injury rehabilitation unit and provided advice on the local options. Further, they explained how and what we needed to do to get funding. They also suggested questions I could ask my partner’s consultants. The team also helped me find more appropriate accommodation, which they kindly offered to make contributions towards. As my partner’s condition started to improve I began to seek appropriate legal advice. Headway helped me set up a legal meeting and provided rooms for those confidential meetings to be held in.The team at Headway provided a service to me and my partner that goes beyond anything I could have hoped for. The level of knowledge and experience held by the team is second to none. Over and above all, the kindness the team showed me during those desperate times is overwhelming and something I will always be grateful for.My partner was discharged from residential rehabilitation in December 2014. He continues to have a variety of therapies, but in the comfort of our home and close to friends and family. We have a long journey ahead of us, but he amazes me every day and for every day I am grateful. The strength I needed to support my partner and get him the help he needed, came from a few truly wonderful people. Mari and the team from Headway are fantastic - so thank you Headway Bristol for your amazing work.

New BooksWe have purchased the following new books for our Resource Library. If you come across a title you would like to add to our collection, please let us know by emailing [email protected] or ring 0117 340 3771.

‘My Everything’ – by Katie Marsh. A fictional book about Hannah’s thirty-two-year-old husband who has a stroke . . . on the day she was going to leave him. A thought-provoking, emotive and page-turning debut novel perfect for fans of Jojo Moyes and Jodi Picoult.

‘Another World’ by Ian Litchfield. In March 1972 a young farmer on his way to college was thrown from a car and suffered serious head injuries. He survived... just. Now he was sent to another world. A world of slow speech, tortuous movement, fatigue, headaches and depression. He wants you to know about his recovery, and about the Headway charity in Northampton that helps people like him.

‘Blindsided’ by Michael Lynagh. Few players in the history of the game have had as illustrious a career as Wallaby fly-half and captain Michael Lynagh.Yet fast forward to that April day in 2012, as Lynagh lay partially blinded in intensive care at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, his life hanging by a thread following a major stroke, his wife and three young boys on the other side of the world. The day that defined the rest of his life. Lynagh’s story is one of coruscating highs and crippling lows. It’s the personal tale of a sportsman playing to the extremes of his profession, but also a human tale of surviving debilitating trauma and finding a new meaning to life.

‘Heads up, Tim Tron’ by The Children’s Trust. Written for any young readers who’d like to know more about acquired brain injury, Tim-Tron’s story explains the condition by placing it in a world of mechanical marvels. This lavish picture book is full of practical ideas to help children, their siblings, friends (and maybe some parents) understand and manage brain injury.

Autumn 2015

The HIYA! (Head Injured Young Adults) group have been busy recently enjoying varied activities.

In July our young people headed over to the Vassall Centre in Fishponds for their annual summer fayre. The HIYA group was in charge of running a Tombola and a Book Stall; our young people used their best sales techniques and managed to raise a fabulous £50 for Headway Bristol… Well done everyone! It wasn’t all work however; our young people also enjoyed the BBQ and a few cakes from nearby stands.

As summer drew to a close, the HIYA group braved the pouring rain for our August activity; the Shaun the Sheep walking trail. We managed to see 11 of the 70 Shaun sculptures around the city centre, followed by a well-deserved hot chocolate to warm up. We had a fab-ewe-lous time… It was baaaa-rilliant (sorry)!

In September we had a visit from Ellen from Young HealthWatch (YHW) Bristol to discuss what YHW does and how our young people can get involved. HealthWatch encourage and empower young people to speak up and give their opinions on health, wellbeing and social care services so that service providers not only meet the needs of young people but continue to improve them; an invaluable service as the voices of young people can often be under represented, dismissed or tokenistic.

With winter closing in we have lots to look forward to; with a visit to the Christmas market in November and the Panto in December starring Warwick Davis!

FundraisingSecret Art Exhibition and Sale

Headway Bristol were extremely excited to host our first ever art exhibition and sale in October. We had two parts to the event – firstly we invited over 100 Bristol artists to take part by creating a piece on an A4 board using the theme ‘My World’ with any medium they chose. We were truly humbled by the support and enthusiasm we received to this invitation – we collected nearly 80 original pieces from a variety of established and up-coming artists giving us a really diverse line-up for the event (including the work of Emma Caton, Bea Kayani, Sophie Howard, Les Matthews, Simon Tozer and many more). We also had seven of the ‘Shaun the Sheep’ artists taking part.

These pieces formed the ‘Secret Sale’. All of the art work remained anonymous throughout the event and all items were available to purchase for £40 each. People bought the piece because they liked it - rather than it being because it was by a certain artist or of high value. This meant that some people may well have taken home some rather valuable pieces for just £40!

The second element of the event was the auction of 10 fantastic pieces of original artwork, including two sculptures, that were donated by different artists including those mentioned above. These pieces were auctioned live online on the evening of our preview event which was held on the 28th October.During the preview evening excitement buzzed around the room as each round of bidding neared the end with guests bidding from their phones along with others from home.

Guest who purchased tickets for the preview evening (held at OVO Energy, Bristol) were from a variety of organisations linked with the Charity. We were also very lucky to have some of the artists

themselves come along and our special guest speaker was Richard Starzak – Co-Creator of ‘Shaun the Sheep’. Throughout the evening Richard very kindly drew sketches of Shaun for other guests in exchange for donations to the Charity, one of which went to auction in the room raising over £120. Richard’s Shaun sketches raised over £400 so a huge thank you to him for all of his efforts on the night.

Over 65% of the art pieces from the secret art sale were sold on the first night and eight

out of the ten auction pieces were sold online. We raised over £5000 from the preview night which is absolutely fantastic!! We do still have a small number of pictures available to buy (these can be viewed on our website), visit www.headwaybristol.org.uk/Art-Exhibition for more details of these.

FundraisingOn the 29th of October we opened the exhibition to the public. During the day supporters, families and others were invited to view the exhibition where they also had the opportunity to purchase some of the remaining art. There were refreshments available and activities for the children to take part in - including OVO Energy’s famous tree house and slide!

We would like to thank the event sponsors – Guildhall Chambers, Novum Law & OVO Energy . Thank you to all of the Headway Bristol volunteers and staff who helped during the run up and throughout the event for all of their hard work, to all of the artists for their generosity and donations of some very inspiring works and lastly to everyone who came along and supported the event. Without everyone’s support the tremendous success of the event would not have been possible.

Capita Golf DayOn the 17th September Capita held their annual golf tournament choosing Headway Bristol as their charity of the year. After a hearty breakfast bap and coffee, 26 teams of four enjoyed the 18 holes over nearly 200 acres of beautiful greens and water features. The Kendleshire is well known for its water hazards, but on the day the teams seemed to take it all in their stride with some fantastic scores! After the tournament, golfers retired to the bar for a few well deserved refreshments while the other teams trickled in. Once everyone had returned from their round everyone gathered for the three course dinner and prize giving ceremony all taking place in the Badminton

suite which overlooks the 18th Hole.Pictured below are winning team Bray and Slaughter and 2nd runner up Withy King which included our Fundraising Assistant Tom Croucher. We would like to thank Capita, and in particular Nick Knight and Louise Bigland for organising a fantastic and successful event and for choosing to support Headway Bristol.

Cricket Week

Headway Bristol celebrated its second Cricket Week from 20th-24th July this year and it was just as successful as the first! Service users thoroughly enjoyed an informative tour of Gloucestershire County Cricket Ground where they were able to see the changing rooms, boxes, media suites and new pavilion.

“To someone like myself, who knows very little about cricket, Roz made the tour very enjoyable!”

“We met a lady called Roz who was very informative and knowledgeable… They have developed the ground to County Standard and have done a great job. OWZAT!”

On Thursday 23rd July we saw the return of the Headway Bristol Kwik Cricket Tournament at Frenchay Cricket Club – unfortunately Rowan Dartington were unable to put in a side so that left the trophy there for the taking!

We were again very lucky with the weather as it stayed dry all day whilst the 7 teams played their round robin group games. We then played two semi-finals which meant the final was New Law vs Novum Law. After a fantastic match New Law were victorious. Well done to all the teams that to took part and congratulations New Law, our new reigning champions!

Once again everyone was extremely generous in buying raffle tickets, we had some fantastic prizes including a Mountain Bike donated by Warburtons.

A special thank you once again to Frenchay Cricket Club who have hosted the event now for the past three years and donating the venue, BBQ and cricket equipment. Thank you to all of the volunteers and local companies for donating raffle prizes, food for the bbq and their time to help out at the event – these donations from the community enabled us to maximise the total amount of money raised. The event raised just under £1000, thank you!

September Half Marathon

On September 13th, it was the Bristol Half Marathon! This year, we had Zoe, Emily, Claire and Kelly running in memory of Ben Hiscox. They raised an amazing £1200! We also had Olly Griffin take on the impressive 13 mile challenge and raised £100 for us.

It was great to see so many dedicated supporters willing to take up this impressive challenge in aid of Headway Bristol. Taking part in community events, such as the Bristol Half Marathon, are a great way to not only raise vital funds, but raise awareness of Headway Bristol and the services we provide in the local community.
