PARKING MOBILITY APP It happens all too frequently…that car parked in the accessible space with no plate or placard. Or you come out of the store only to find that someone has parked in the access area next to an accessible space. But what to do about it? You can confront the driver, but these days, that’s a dangerous proposition and never ends positively. And getting a police officer there before the violator leaves is unlikely. But now there is an easy way to address the issue in a positive, proactive way. Accessible parking violations are more than an inconvenience. It’s the number one threat to the health, safety and community access for people with disabilities. Parking Mobility, a disability run nonprofit organization, puts the solution into the hands of those directly affected. “Before Parking Mobility, I got so frustrated about disabled parking violations. Now I can be a part of the solution.” Renee Lopez, Parking Mobility Volunteer. Parking Mobility provides a free smartphone App that allows anyone to report violations quickly and easily. Using the Parking Mobility App takes less than a minute, is discreet and provides much needed data to address the issue. The data is critically important to educating community leaders and getting them to approve Parking Mobility’s full enforcement and education program. “Enforcement will only go so far in addressing the problem. We like Parking Mobility because it leverages enforcement efforts into education that ends the problem.” Judge Bert Cobb, Hays County Judge. Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez adds, “Parking Mobility provides an excellent partnership between law enforcement and the disability community to solve a problem through proactive involvement and education.” “The key to getting any community on board is getting community involvement and gathering data to show there is a need,” says Mack Marsh, Project Director for Parking Mobility. To get involved (get the app), go to parkingmobility.com/volunteer For more information visit the website https://www.parkingmobility.com/ or email [email protected]

12TH ANNUAL WISCONSIN VISIONWALK @fightblindness The 2020 Walk Committee welcomes all residents of Wisconsin to our FREE 12th Anniversary Wisconsin VisionWalk in Veteran’s Park on the lakefront in Milwaukee on Sunday, May 17, 2020. They hope to welcome over 700 people this year, and they are asking for your help! VisionWalk is in support of the Foundation Fighting Blindness, which is the world’s largest private funder of retinal degenerative diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa (RP), macular degeneration, Usher syndrome, Stargardt disease, and LCA. The Foundation has been part of some very exciting new research, which may someday soon lead to a cure for these diseases that affect more than 10 million Americans. Walk Chairs Kelly Savasta and Nicole Everson are supporting VisionWalk because the cause is very near to them, as they are both personally affected. Until the last couple years, there hasn’t been much promising research and potential for a cure. The Foundation has given them, and many others hope that there is a cure in sight. The 5K walk is a family-friendly event benefitting the entire state of Wisconsin and its residents, and is free to anyone and everyone, including pets! There will be bounce houses and giant inflatable slide, provided by Music On the Move Plus, the largest event management company in Milwaukee. The family of owner Taj Jordan has five members affected with vision loss and has jumped on board to provide much of the equipment for the walk. There will also be a lot of other fun stuff, including popular Milwaukee entertainer Eric Barbieri. VisionWalk will also have fire trucks, a face painter, mascots from area sports teams (Roscoe from the Admirals, Brad Beach from the Wave, and Star Wars characters), and a whole lot more. There will also be a free lunch served after the walk. If you would like to find out more about the walk, you can access through the Foundation's walk website at www.VisionWalk.org and go to the Wisconsin walk page. If you would like more information about the Foundation, and the 12th Annual Wisconsin VisionWalk, please contact Events Manager Steve Sroka at (847) 549-1477, or e-mail at [email protected] .

GOODWILL’S MILEAGE CLUB @AmazingGoodwill Having a goal is the first step towards growing and improving as a person. Here at Goodwill, many of our Clubhouse participants have personal objectives to better their health and fitness on a weekly basis. The Mileage Club is one of our most popular programs that gives them the opportunity to reach these goals. We find that walking is a great way for our participants to exercise, while also being social with those around them. A typical Mileage Club session will see our participants walking 1 to 2 full miles. The club’s activity locations vary from indoor tracks within the halls of Goodwill and Southridge mall, to outdoor courses around our walking paths and other local parks. Participants also look forward to being involved in the 5K walks that have been hosted both here and at our other Goodwill locations. Like other memberships, being a part of the Mileage Club comes with several perks. Each member has the option to sport a Mileage Club necklace, on which participants can keep track of their progress by adding a bead that they earn for every mile they complete. Those who have walked the most total miles, along with our weekly leaders, also get their names displayed on the Mileage Club board for the world to see. As another form of motivation, we have selected destinations for our group to “walk to”. Once the group has collectively traveled the number of miles it takes to get from Goodwill to our chosen location, we celebrate with a party themed to match it. Our first accomplishment was trekking 125 miles to the doorstep of Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers. Our participants have now chosen to raise the stakes and are currently taking on the 1,225-mile journey to Walt Disney World in Florida. A frequent member Eric L. was quoted, when asked why he enjoys Mileage Club, saying, “Yes. I like the exercise and going to Disney World!”. Eric is just one of the many Clubhouse participants that take advantage of the time that Mileage Club allows for them to stay active and move steadily closer towards their goals.

LET MCTS BE YOUR FREEDOM ON WHEELS IN 2020 @RideMCTS The days are getting longer, which means that spring will be here before you know it! However, snow is still a possibility in March, so MCTS gives a friendly reminder and encourages all riders and residents to spread the word on the importance of snow removal at bus stops, as well as sidewalks and curb ramps. Innovative App Helps Guide MCTS Riders Who are Blind or Low Vision The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) is excited to announce a pilot program that is making it easier for riders who are blind or low vision to get around the community. Through an app called Aira, trained professionals use a customer’s live cell phone camera to offer verbal step by step travel directions, read signage, describe objects, identify obstacles, and much more. In addition to accessing the camera feed, the Aira representative can also use GPS to pinpoint exactly where the customer is on a map – making it even easier for them to provide accurate guidance. Aira users are normally charged a fee to use the service. But thanks to this partnership with Milwaukee County Office for Persons with Disabilities, the Aira service is now free to anyone navigating to and from MCTS bus stops, buses and more than 45 locations across Milwaukee County – including Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport, the Milwaukee County Courthouse, Milwaukee County Zoo, dozens of County Parks, and more. The Aira app is free to download from Apple’s App Store and Google Play. Once installed, it takes just minutes to create a free account and get started. Once connected, users should be sure to tell the Aira agent that they would like to use the free Milwaukee County Transit System Access Offer. If you are interested in additional information on the pilot, please contact the Mobility Management Team at 414-937-3256 or visit ridemcts.org.

March Route Changes to BlueLine, Routes 23, 30, & 30X Effective Sunday, March 8th, the following changes will occur: BlueLine – The BlueLine and Route 23 will be merged. The BlueLine will now cover the portion of the Route 23 that formerly ran on Congress and 91st Street. Route 30/30X – The 30 & 30X will merge into one route. The 30X name will be retired. The new Route 30 will have the same routing, but some lightly used bus stops will be removed. These changes will simplify service, allow schedules to be more consistent and prevent buses from bunching while in traffic. 2020 MCTS System Maps Updated 2020 system maps are now available. If you need a printed copy, please contact Chris Fox at 414-937-3256. Don’t forget to “Like” our group on Facebook, “MCTS Travel Training,” and you can follow our outreach presentations, ask us questions and request an individualized or group travel training session. If you see any barriers that need the attention of the Bus Stop Barrier Remover, please contact Chris Fox at 414-937-3256, or [email protected] .
