Power Outage – Thanks to all of you, especially the Tower residents, for your patience last Thursday during the eight-hour power outage affecting the Towers. There wasn’t a lot we could do, but CPS did an amazing job in getting us back on line as quickly as possible. The picture below on the left shows two CPS workers standing by the new transformer (replacing the old one which “blew” that morning). The picture on the right shows the crane used to remove the old transformer and place the new one. Weather and timing were perfect, with electricity being restored just as the sun was setting.

Resident Safety – Wall protectors have been placed at the entryway to Tower 3 & 4 lower level; therefore, we ask you to now leave the shopping carts there instead of across from the Maintenance office. There is a fire extinguisher located on the wall where the carts used to be, and we don’t want to block that extinguisher with the shopping carts.

Soliciting – Reminder, please BST is a no soliciting area unless cleared through Resident Services and Activities.

Resident Roster – The 2018 Resident Phone Roster is available for pick-up at the Front Desk.

Wednesday Shopping – Departs from the Lobby at 1pm. Wednesday, Feb 14 – Trader Joe’s Wednesday, Feb 21 – Costco

3 Deadline: Friday, Feb 16 @ Noon - [email protected]

Friday “Mall” Transportation – Departs from the Lobby at 10am. Friday, Feb 9 – Ingram Mall Friday, Feb 16 – Wonderland Mall of the Americas and North Star Mall

Housekeeping Spotlight Item – These weekly items give housekeepers an area of special interest. Housekeepers will still adhere to their checklists but will pay special attention to the Spotlight Items of the week:

Week of Feb 12 – Vanity Lights Week of Feb 19 – Gaskets on Refrigerator/Dishwasher

BOB’S BLOG By B b

Bob’s sharing his Blog space this week with Rocky Racoon who, a few weeks ago, thought he would try and become a resident. A Saturday morning found Rocky trying to gain entrance through the Lobby front doors; we were able to lure him out of there with Vienna Sausages from the Village Store, but then he moved to the side doors. After way too much time had been spent with Rocky, and after receiving way too much input from everybody passing through the Lobby on how to get him out of the doorways, we were

finally able to cage him and relocate him. Bob doesn’t come close to receiving the amount of attention that Rocky did! Rocky also left us a “present”, hmmmm…guess those Vienna Sausages upset his sensitive belly!!

COWBOY BREAKFAST THANK YOU By Cowgirl Dodie

There are so many to thank for making the BST West Annual Cowboy Breakfast such a wonderful, fun-filled event. Please extend our “Thanks” to the following who contributed so much: Joan Homrich and Morrison’s for all of the tacos; the Thrift Shop for providing the bank; “Special thanks” to the Dining Services crew and all those “special helpers” who served – Thank You!

THANK YOU By Ellen Alkire

A very big thank you to everyone who contributed flags to the Boy Scouts. Boy Scout Troop 285 retired between 150 to 175 flags on Saturday, 27 Jan. Of that, 53 came from the Village, and Boy Scout Troop 285 sends their deepest gratitude for your participation. The flag retirement ceremony is a very formal ceremony with white gloves that the entire troop participates in. Please keep giving your used either American or Texas flags to the Front Desk for the Boy Scouts, as the Boy Scouts collect flags all year long for their next flag retirement ceremony in January 2019. Again, thank you so much for your participation.

TREE OF LIGHTS THANKS By Forrest Smith, Chairman, ACC

Thank you to Village West residents who honored and remembered loved ones through their support of the 2017 Tree of Lights. A special word of thanks to Debbie Christian and a great group of resident volunteers: Linda Ball, Valerie Byrd, Lynn Christian, Bonnie Gardner, Paula Haley, Lyn Henderson, Jean Lichtenstein, Martha MacLeod, Carolyn Massello, Annie Moore, Evelyn Nettleship, Lynne Payne, Valerie Rieke, Jeannie Robinson, Sue Robert, Billie Rosencrans, and Nan Smith for their labor of love to manage all the details involved to make this longstanding tradition successful. Gifts totaled $1,790.19 for the 2017 Tree of Lights program, and will provide valuable support for projects to benefit residents of The Vista in 2018. Another long-standing holiday tradition is the sight of poinsettias filling the community. A big thank you to Martha Wesson for her work to make this happen and thanks to those who supported this project.

THANK YOU By Fred Seymour

Thanks to the many who provided uplifting thoughts, concern, gift and goodies, cards, visits (often many times) and most of all, prayers! Your concern for me and my recovery is very much appreciated!!

THANK YOU DINING ROOM STAFF By Lee Wells

A special thank you to our Dining Room Staff for serving such a lovely luncheon for our Lackland Spouses Club members. Elizabeth and Raquel made us all very happy with their wonderful service and Carlos, the chef, who fixed the delicious lunch. Many thanks also to Joan and Daniel, who planned and made sure everything went well. We are so lucky to have such capable staff which works so hard to please us.

RESIDENTS’ CONCERT SERIES By Ginny Hallager

On Sunday, Jan 28 we were treated to a dynamic duo playing individually and then teaming up for some incredible four-hand pieces on our Yamaha. Sherry Kim and Shai Zohar-Natanel have studied with Sasha Moutouzkine and have “done him proud” as the saying goes. Sherry played a tender piece by Enrique Granados; then we enjoyed a transcription of “Embraceable You” by Eric Wild and finally a Schubert piece in ¾ time called “Soirees de Vienne, No. 6.” Shai showed his versatility playing Chopin’s “Sonata No. 2, 1st Movement;” his strength was contrasted by the more delicate touch needed for “Liebestod” by Wagner. Then he had us mesmerized by a very intricate arrangement of his own of “Over the Rainbow.” If those pieces weren’t enough to satisfy, the two of them teamed up with three different four-hand pieces which left us gasping for breath! And they had only two weeks in which to perfect them! Incredible! They began the concert with “The William Tell Overture” at a break-neck pace. Later in the program they teamed up with Dvorak’s “Slavonic Dance, Op.

12 Deadline: Friday, Feb 16 @ Noon - [email protected]

72,” which was tender and quiet. Little did we know what was coming in the final piece, “Sabre Dance” by Khachaturian. There was a tangle of hands and arms crossing each other on the keyboard throughout the piece. Glissando after glissando rained down. We, the audience were on our feet as the piece concluded. What a beginning to the 2018 Series.

GREAT FOOD IN SAN ANTONIO By The Clandestine Gourmet

Chinese New Year begins Friday, Feb 16 and, according to the Chinese animal zodiac calendar, 2018 is the year of the Dog. So, if you were born in 2006, 1994, 1982, 1970, 1958, 1946, or 1934 you might be a little unlucky, since the Chinese believe the most unlucky people are those who were born in previous Dog years. But so what! Eat, drink and be merry anyway! A good place to eat terrific Chinese food is at Sichuan House, located near the I-410 end of Wurzbach Road. This is the most authentic Chinese food Mrs. CD and I have tried in San Antonio, and we love Chinese food. Try the Bejing style pork tenderloin with steamed buns, twice-cooked pork, tea smoked duck, spicy lamb with cumin, mapo tofu, or their signature pork belly dish. All are excellent, as is the hot and sour soup. If you only like very Americanized Chinese food, this might seem a little adventurous, but it’s a great place to try something more authentic.

SPURS TICKETS By Mike McGinty

A small group of residents share two seats and parking at all 44 home games, plus the playoffs. We have had these seats up behind the Spurs bench for six years. It is a much different experience at the AT&T Center than watching the games on TV, and it is always exciting to see our championship team in action. By Monday, Feb 12, we need to renew our tickets for the 2018-2019 season (October to April). If you would like to join our group for a few games or get more information, please contact Mike McGinty before the February date. Go Spurs Go!

GREAT COURSE DISCUSSION GROUP By Allan Novak

The current topic for the Castroville Public Library’s Great Courses Discussion Group is “A History of Freedom.” This course traces the concept of freedom from classical Greece to the modern day, exploring the political, economic, social, cultural and moral dimensions of this ideal. The course is presented in the format of DVD lectures followed by brief discussion. Come join us – there is no cost, and new participants are welcome at any time. The group meets Monday evenings from 6:30-8pm at the Castroville Public Library. For more information, contact the library at 830-931-4095.

DABBLERS By Sharon Petesch

The purpose of the Dabblers group is to provide the residents of BSTW who have an interest in needlework and handicrafts with a means of coming together to share their skills and learn new ones in return. Our meetings are held the second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of each month between September and May at 1:30pm in the Craft Room (which we share with the pool tables) next to the Barbershop. Members of the group are encouraged to create various items which they then make available for sale to other residents, staff and visitors. These items are on display in the cases in the corridor to the Vista entrance near the Beauty Shop. All proceeds from these sales are used to benefit BSTW or other non-profit organizations. Please feel free to drop by and check out our Dabbler group!

TRAVEL TALK – IBERIAN PENINSULA By Bill Ball

We will discover two views of Portugal and Spain on Friday, Feb 9, at 10am in the Helen LeMay Room. We’ll start with favorite scenes from Barcelona to Lisbon, and then you’ll see Portugal and Spain from another perspective. Paula Hansen and her husband John traveled with us from Lisbon to Madrid and put together a video, including some scenes from a Spanish bullfight. If you haven’t seen Travel Talk before, we visit interesting places around the world and usually create short videos with narration and music. We hope to see you in the Helen LeMay Room for the first Travel Talk of 2018! To RSVP or for more information about Travel Talk, please call me or contact Bill Ball at [email protected].

BOOK SIGNING By Carol Vandesteeg

Ren Vandesteeg will have a book signing on Friday, Feb 9, from 10am- noon, in the Main Lobby. The title of his book is God’s Plan: Eliminate Biblical Ignorance. Many people do not read the Bible much and do not understand it. Yet, most people think it is a good book and would like to know what it means. Ren wrote his book to make

14 Deadline: Friday, Feb 16 @ Noon - [email protected]

the Bible simpler and easy to understand. The Bible is one main story with one main character. God’s Plan traces that story chronologically from Genesis through Revelation. It’s an easy read. “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.” I Corinthians 2:9. Come and take a look at this new book.

SING-ALONG STRINGS UKULELE BAND By Verna Mae Roberson

Music and romance are simply synonymous in February, and there will be both at the sing-along at Blue Skies East on Saturday, Feb 10. The singing begins at 7pm, but the bus departs Blue Skies West at 6:30pm, so be sure to sign up early. Bring your stringed instrument and play along; the words and chords are projected onto a large screen. Fresh popcorn is provided by our hosts and some folks bring snacks, and drink to share during “halftime.” If you want to brush up on your skills, drop me a note or call. Lessons and instructors are available, and we need more band members.

SINGLES-MINGLES WEST By Arlean Graves

Our next luncheon will take place on Sunday, Feb 11, at the Teppanyaki Chinese Buffet (near Ingram Mall). They offer a wide variety of food items and food stations. For example, Mongolian grill (where steaks are grilled to order); sushi bar; salad bar; dessert bar; fruit bar; crab legs; etc. The cost is $10.49 for seniors. CALLING ANTARCTICA By Bill Overacker

On Jan 20 at 1700 hours, five Hams gathered in the Radio Room in their attempt to contact the McMurdo Amateur Radio Station in Antarctica. While three newly licensed Hams, Gwen, Loretta and Terry observed, the more experienced Hams, Forrest and Joel, dialed the transceiver to the pre-arranged megahertz setting for the best signal transmission for contact. Unfortunately, contact was not made due to poor propagation conditions. Interest in contacting the McMurdo Station occurred three years ago when Joe Manci introduced his granddaughter, Charlotte, who was a contractor employed in Antarctica, to several Hams during one of her multiple visits. She revealed the existence of the McMurdo Ham Station and thought it would be “neat” to talk with her Grandfather. Charlotte was instrumental with connecting us with the current McMurdo Ham point of contact, Graylan. Graylan corrected the

antenna’s beam direction, which increased the station’s range of contacts in the States. With the end of summer approaching and Graylan’s departure, we will again attempt to contact McMurdo’s Station in the future. All was not lost at this session, for contacts were made from one coast to the other, Vermont and Washington State, which delighted the newly licensed Hams. All are welcome to our next Amateur Radio Club meeting on Thursday, Feb 15, at 11:30am in CC1 to learn more about this exciting and beneficial hobby. Please contact Joel Lichtenstein for more information. 73—(Best regards in Ham language).

CATHOLIC NEWS By Annie Moore

Padre Insight - On Wednesday, Feb 14, we experience the confluence of St. Valentine’s Day and the beginning of Lent. It is not only a secular day of celebration, but also a day of fast and abstinence for Christians around the world. This apparent juxtaposition on our liturgical calendar elicits the tension between our secular world and the call to perfection of the spiritual. There are quite a few Valentinus’ in the history of Christianity who were martyred for their faith, those early Christians who paid the price for their ultimate act of love for their God. So perhaps the deeper significance of the two events is that they both call us to ponder the idea of love, death and the ultimate call of Sainthood that can only be acquired through our love of God, neighbor and self. Pax Et Bonum! Fr. Rich Bendorf, O.F.M.

PRAY FOR UNCLE SAM By Ren Vandesteeg

IT DOESN’T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS By Ren Vandesteeg

“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him.” I Corinthians 2:9 I remember a beer commercial on TV where two men in the Rocky Mountains, with a beautiful lake and snowcapped mountains behind them, would click their full beer steins, toast each other and say, “It doesn’t get any better than this.” I beg to differ. God has a plan whereby He will give new life to anyone who comes to Him by faith in His Son Jesus. God has a place reserved in eternity for believers that is so stupendous we cannot fathom how beautiful it will be. The Rockies are spectacular but they will pale in comparison to what God has planned for His new heaven and new earth. Anticipation is half the fun. Enjoy anticipating your eternal life. If you love God your future is dramatically, sensationally, thrilling. When we get to heaven we’ll toast each other and say, “It doesn’t get any better than this!”

We play on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at the BST West tennis courts from 8-10am, weather permitting. For further information, contact Helen Vanderneck, Don & Debbie Christian, Keith & Susan Shumaker or Tom Carter. Also, indoor courts and pickleball equipment are available at Lackland AFB Medina Annex Fitness Center on a first-come, first-served basis. Medina hours are Mon-Fri 5am-9pm and Sat/Sun/Holidays, 8am-4pm.

WRIGHT PAT MAH JONGG By Martha Wesson

January was a quiet month for our group between allergies, injuries, illness and trips. But those who managed to get to CC3 on Tuesday afternoons played an impressive number of hands. Playing with three people instead of four at a table does make it go faster. Sue won the most hands one day with two Firecrackers, a Scotch-hopper, Hi-Jacks and Heavenly Twins. Marilyn had four wins with Dazzle, Windy Pairs twice (which was the Hand of the Day) and Dragon Lineup. Dot had a Dragon Lineup also along with Snowflakes, Heavenly Hash, and Fran had Heavenly Twins and Doublets. Katherine had three wins, Martha had three, and Lily had three. Nan had her favorite Newsy Pung as did Evelyn with Ohio Snowsuit. Annie won the Hand of the Day twice

23 Deadline: Friday, Feb 16 @ Noon - [email protected]

also and since she had the last win, the honor was hers. We are hoping to have some new players soon, so stop by on Tuesdays! See if you’d like to be one of them!

NATIONAL MAH JONGG LEAGUE By Gayl Ganskow

Click, click, tiles are mixed and walls are built. You’ve given tiles not of your choosing and you choose a hand. You pass off what you don’t want, hoping to get what you need. Hey, what in the world is “mash pit?” The game continues, draw and discard (don’t forget to rack)! Laughter is heard. Mistakes are made. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. But it’s still the best game going to keep us on our toes and our minds alert! Come and enjoy Playing Session: Wednesdays, 1-3:30pm in CC3, Fridays, 1-3:30pm in CC3 and All B&A Days, 2nd Wed of each month in Card Room 112. The Card Room is located across from the Thrift Shop on the first floor.

Tommy Gun then beat Big John while Talley Ho beat Miller Lite. That set up Talley Ho and Tommy Gun with Talley Ho winning at the upper level.
