As Winter is fast approaching after the wonderfully mild weather that we have been having - we have noticed that students are not adher- ing to the school uniform policy. We understand that it can at times be difficult to get to the shops quickly - however as the weather has definitely turned, it is a timely reminder for parents to ensure that their children are wearing the navy blue and sky blue elements of our school uniform. There is also a lot of lost proper- ty items that can be found in the Library breezeway - so please check to see if your childs lost jumper has been relocated here. We look forward to seeing more children in their DNPS Winter uniform.

Fairytale Fiasco Incursion

The Year 1s and 2s have been studying Fairytales. As part of this theme the 1s and 2s hosted Gavin from The Drama Toolbox. Gavin helped our children explore the imaginative and crea-tive world of fair-ytales with his unique drama workshop. During the session, the students entered into Fairytale Land where things were not what they seemed! A terrible spell was cast on the inhabitants of Fairytale Land. Mice roared and dragons fled, wolves snorted and pigs huffed and puffed! Our students were fully en-

gaged during this workshop that consist-ed of drama, move-ment, costumes and props. Everyone was given an opportunity with various outfits to become a Fairytale Land character. These costumes included dwarves, witches/

wizards, dragons, mice, cats, wolves and pigs. (http://www.thedramatoolbox.com.au/). Here are thoughts of a few of our students about this invaluable incursion. “Today was an interesting experience at Fairyland which had many different types of costumes. My class took off at 9 o’clock to the old Prep Assembly Area.” Ardita. “First, we had to do some warm-ups and met a man called Gavin.” Swetha. “Next, we

had to go through a Dream Tunnel to enter Fairyland. It was a place full of dress-ups and wizards.” Vansh. “A wiz-ard put a spell on everyone, but there were lots of ‘opposites’. I was a wolf from The Three Little Pigs.” Carlo. “Dragons were dancing like ballerinas and cats were being chased by mice! The terrible spell was working. I was a pig chasing the wolves. The wolves had to build a house made from bricks. We pigs tried to huff and puff, but we couldn’t blow their house down.” Surjo. “Next, it was the turn of the dwarfs and wizards. The dwarfs were as tall as giants. The wizards used strange looking wands. Some of them looked like potatoes.” Amelia. “To break the spell, we all had to find five special ingredients and add them to a caul-dron. Gavin then said the magical words to re-turn us back to normal. It made a big KA-BOOM and everyone fell down. I was exhaust-ed.” Afif. “I had a fantastic day. The best part was putting on the costumes. And we even had a little dance at the end.” Sedrick. A video of the workshop can be accessed from our webpage, www.dandenongnorthps.vic.edu.au/page/106/ .

In Term 2, the students in Grade 4 have been study-ing Forces in Motion as our Integrated Studies theme. We have been busy conducting experiments exploring the various forces of push, pull, friction, magnetic force and gravity.

On the 9th of May, we had a special guest visit all the grades, the amazing, scientist, Ben. He taught us about Isaac Newton and his ‘Three Laws of Mo-tion’ which explain how forces affect things around us. We found that sitting on a chair of many nails won’t hurt as much as a single nail. We also ex-plored friction by playing tug-of-war on skate-boards. Finally we got to explore the forces our-selves in a variety of experiments including: torna-do in a bottle, gyroscopes and making rockets.

All the students enjoyed our incursion and hope we can learn even more about forces throughout the rest of the term.

Baris (4L) has completed a recount of the incur-sion. “Today the Grade 4’s got a funny, entertain-ing and HILARIOUS man named Ben for our sci-

ence incursion. It was outside our class at 10-11am.

We learned about push and pull and we learned about Newton’s Three Laws of Motion. Ben showed us friction and he showed us how, if you put bicarb soda and vinegar together it makes a ROCKET!!! When the vinegar and the bicarb soda mixes, it puts pressure on the lid, so it explodes.

There was also the nail chair and if you put a bal-loon on it, it won’t pop. But if you put it on one point on the edge, it will pop. But that was not my favourite part.

My favourite part was the hovercraft because I

didn’t know you could do that, and I really

learned a lot.”

Gala Day 1 The Year 5 and 6 students have spent the last couple of Fri-day mornings, train-ing for their chosen sport in the hopes of being selected to play in the Gala Day 1 sports of AFL, Basketball, Netball and T-ball.

With the teams se-lected, it was a cou-rageous group of children who headed out into the cold conditions last Friday. Some were play-ing at Dandenong Basketball Stadium, however the rest were at Greaves Reserve.

It is always interesting at Monday’s Assembly to see how our children fared against other schools in the district.

Beginning with our Netballers who had three different teams. Reshmi and Kitty reported on the Mixed team who made it into the finals against Dandenong South - however they lost placing them second overall on the day.

Nyra then spoke about the A team of girls Net-ball who were triumphant at the end of the com-petition! The final was also played against Dan-denong South - in which they defeated the other team 6 goals to 2. This win places them in the next level competition to be held later in the term.

The final team - Girls B team unfortunately lost the final against Lyndale Greens, 3 goals to 1.

It was pleasing to hear how the teams did not give up and played with good sportsmanship.

The next sport to present was the Basketball teams - of which there were four. Two boys teams and two girls teams.

The Girls A team had a fantastic day out, winning all of their matches but unfortunately faltering in the final to place second overall. The Girls B team had better luck, competing in the finals and ad-vancing through to the District competition in a couple of weeks.

Unfortunately both the A and B boys teams did not fair as well! Both teams placed third overall in the competition.

The next sport of AFL was a mixed team event. The team played 4 rounds winning 2 of these matches which allowed Dandenong North to play off for 3rd or 4th position against Carwatha. With their overall ranking being 4th out of the 8 schools competing. Excellent leadership from Sana, Tabita and Daniel assisted the performance of the team.

The final sport was T-ball - with three teams from Dandenong North competing. It was particularly close competition with team 1 and 2 losing the fi-nal by only one run! Team C won the final and all team members left the field with their heads held high.

We thank all of the staff who trained the students to compete and gave them the opportunity to play a new sport.

A big thank you to Mr Gould and Mr Raymond for stepping in for Mr Malone and assisting with the fitness and training of these students.
