Respecting Differences

Students in preschool and TK have been identifying things that are the same and different about each other. Students are learning that they are alike in

many ways and that they must be kind to everyone despite differences. Please consider the following ideas if your child approaches you with questions about

their own differences or differences from others.

Be Respectful of Feelings – One of the most important lessons in regards to respecting and accepting diversity is that while we all may appear to be different on the outside, we are all made up of the same things on the inside. It doesn’t matter if we are an adult or a child, all have feelings that can get hurt when teased or insulted. Helping children understand that we all have differences and feelings is the key to guiding our children to respect and accept diversity.

Embrace Differences – Our differences are what make us unique. Let your child know that what sets them apart is something to be proud of and embrace! Our uniqueness is a gift from God.

Use It As A Learning Opportunity –When your child comes home with a question about someone or something they saw, don’t be afraid to talk to them about it. Use it as a learning opportunity for both of you.

Set A Good Example – Be mindful of jokes, slurs, and your attitude towards others. Often, children repeat what they hear from their friends and family members even if they don’t understand or know what it means.
