Glass has submitted the following Spring Driving Tips: Buckle Up Correctly…every time, on every trip – and insist that all passengers do likewise. Properly restrain children in appropriate safety seats in the back seat. Most crashes occur within 25 miles of home and the greatest numbers of deaths occur in crashes at speeds of less than 40 mph. For more information on proper restraint use, please refer to your Vehicle Owner’s Manual, child restraint manual or go to www.preciouscargo.com . Do Not Drive While Drowsy. On long trips, factor in ample time for breaks and, if possible, share driving responsibilities. Make Sure Your Car is in Good Shape. Worn out tires and windshield wiper blades are symptoms of neglected vehicle maintenance that put drivers and passengers at serious risk during the typically rainy months of spring. Rainy weather also affects driver visibility. Because 90% of driving decisions depend on good vision, a clean windshield is imperative. Streaking and smearing impair vision and are caused by worn windshield blades. One out of every five vehicles usually has worn wiper blades. Be Prepared. Keep emergency supplies in your car such as flares and hazard signs in case of a breakdown or flat. If your car overheats, let the engine cool and call for service; otherwise you risk damaging the vehicle. Make sure there is a jack in the car and that the spare is properly inflated. Pull completely off the road and avoid exiting the side of the vehicle facing traffic. If you are in your car during a lightning storm, the vehicle’s metal cage will conduct a charge into the ground and help protect you. Do not attempt to leave the vehicle and run for cover. Suicide Prevention

Efforts id you know that suicide is the third leading cause of death with teens between the ages of 15 and 19? Or that suicide has been declared a major public health issue by the

World Health Organization, The National Institutes for Health and the U.S. Surgeon General?

in Campbell County

2

In Campbell County, we are making an effort to address this trend through education. As the

result of a partnership with the Crisis Line of Central Virginia and the Virginia Department of Health, all middle school and high school health teachers have undergone training to implement a suicide prevention curriculum titled, SOS. The purpose of this curriculum is to arm students with knowledge about the signs of depression and suicide and to provide them with a plan of action if they do suspect that a friend is suicidal. Through discussion and video vignettes, students are taught to A.C.T. : Acknowledge there may be a problem Care by showing your concern Telling a responsible adult All students in 8th and 10th grade health classes will be exposed to this lesson as part of their health curriculum. Accompanying newsletters for parents and students with information on suicide and depression will be distributed at this time. In addition, if any student feels they need help or assistance with this issue, a confidential method for referral will be made available. Our intent with the SOS curriculum is prevention, which is in line with the county commitment to helping our students develop healthy coping skills for life. If you have any questions about the curriculum, you may contact your child’s school or Linda Grubba, the Supervisor for Guidance and Counseling @ 993-2257.

Red Cross Club News ed Cross Club recently had Doug Eggleston from the local chapter of the American Red Cross as a guest

speaker for our March meeting. Mr. Eggleston explained some of the services provided by the American Red Cross which range from helping families who have experienced house fire to assisting local troops who are being deployed to Afghanistan as well as assisting their families. The Red Cross Club has agreed to work with the American Red Cross on some of these projects in the future. On April 29, 2010, for 8:30 – 2:30, Brookville Red Cross Club will host our Spring Bloodmobile at BHS in the new gym. The Bloodmobile is open to the school and community to stop in and donate. Students who wish to donate must sign up in advance during lunch or see Mrs. Reid to sign-up. Students who are 16 must obtain a Parental Consent Form which must be signed by a parent in order for the student to donate. All potential donors must meet the guidelines established by the American Red Cross. Look for signs in the halls or contact Mrs. Reid if you have questions. If you wish to donate and are not a student you may simply stop by the Bloodmobile during the hours of 8:30 -2:30. If you plan to come near the end of the Bloodmobile, come by at least 2:15 as the charge nurse usually closes sign-ins before 2:30. Please mark your calendar for April 29 and stop by BHS to donate blood to save a life. We need your help to meet our goal 0f 70 units. Who knows? The blood you donate could help save the life of someone you know.

Prom News

he Prom will be held at the James River Conference Center in downtown Lynchburg on Saturday May 1, 2010

from 8 to 11:30 pm!

4

Attention Parents: Prom is a really exciting event that all students should be able to attend! Unfortunately, it can also be very costly. Becca's Closet is a non-profit organization

whose purpose is to give deserving students the opportunity to attend their high school prom by providing formal attire. They have a huge selection of dresses for girls in need and will arrange a time to bring them to our school for the girls to try. There is no cost and any deserving girl can have the dress she chooses. If you are interested, please send an email to Mrs. Ewers. [email protected], as soon as possible. Prom is right around the corner! If you are interested in donating a dress: The Lynchburg chapter of Becca's Closet is taking donations at the "Connecting Point" located at 1216 Rivermont Ave. Lynchburg from 3 to 5 pm on March 25th and April 1st. Please consider donating to this worthy cause! It’s a great way to reuse those dresses just sitting in your closet! For more information go to www.beccascloset.org.

From the Library

esearch has been the theme for classes coming to the library these past few months, but the snow certainly played

havoc with our schedule this year. We will still be doing research long after spring break this year. But, one of my favorite things is a library full of students doing research! It is wonderful to see the growth taking place in research and writing skills. Please remember that you have access from your home computer to any work saved to your “H” drive at school through a resource called NetStorage. You no longer need to use external media for transporting work from home to school. In order to learn to use NetStorage, choose Mrs. Reynolds’ page at newSchoolNotes.com to find information for accessing Netstorage in the attachment at the bottom of the page. Or stop in for a quick tutorial. The library will be celebrating School Library Media Month and National Library Week during the month of April. National Library Week is observed the week of April 11-17, 2010, with

the theme “Communities Thrive @ your library”. First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and to promote library use and support. So please come by sometime during this special month and check out one of the new books purchased this year. Student requests are taken seriously here in the BHS library, and there are many up-to-date titles of interest purchased because students requested them. The library is open each day before and after school and we are eager to see you and help you whenever you can come in for a visit. The Book Club is once again undertaking a special springtime community service project. Club members are making small baskets of goodies to share with some of the residents in a local nursing home, focusing on those who have few visitors. The baskets will include socks, books, brushes and other goodies, and will be delivered to the residents by club members. This is a nice treat for both students and residents. The BHS library is participating in the Virginia Readers’ Choice program again this year. Those students who read four of the ten nominated choices from the high school list can vote for Virginia’s choice book. If you would like to vote, please stop by for a ballot if you have read four of the nominated books. There is still time for any student who would like to read another selection before voting time. We still have a copy of the book A Place Called Brookville – A History and Memoir of Brookville High School 1926 – 1966 by Phyllis Wood Coleman. If you are interested in purchasing your very own signed copy, please come by the library. The year is passing quickly now that spring is here. But there are lots and lots of books to read before the school year ends. Please stop by the library today to find yourself two or three!

Nence again this school year has really gone by fast. It has been a pleasure for all of us in the cafeteria to serve your

breakfast and lunch every day. We are sorry for the menu changes at times, but sometimes it is necessary due to weather or delivery issues. As we close this year we are again overwhelmed with children that have charges on their lunch accounts. We will really be concentrating up getting all of these accounts caught up to a positive balance. In order to try to do this, if your child is on their third charge they will be asked to put the plate lunch back and to get a Cheese Sandwich with their fruit and milk. We are sorry to have to do that but we have our instructions as we try to finish the school year without any negative balances. Please check with your children to make sure their accounts are in good standing. Please feel free to call me at any time during the hours of 6:30 am and 1:30 pm.
