Message from the Executive Director

We congratulated and bid aloha to 122 carpenter and drywall apprentices.... . . this May as they completed their many hours of work and study and became full-fledged journeymen.

This class of apprentices came from many places, many backgrounds. Some were recent high school graduates, while others were working people seeking new careers or fresh opportunities. The Hawaii Carpenters Apprenticeship and Training Fund will continue to welcome those interested in joining our program, but we’re not depending on our past success to attract candidates.

We have taken an aggressive approach to stimulating interest in the building trades. We participate in high school career days and we’ve hosted students at our Kapolei training center. We partner with organizations like the Hawaii National Guard’s Youth Challenge

and Oahu Worklinks. The Department of Transportation’s annual Hawaii Construction Career Days for young people is a regular date on our calendar. We support construction academies at 15 public high schools.

This fall, we are intensifying our recruitment efforts with a direct connection to our public schools. As you will read in this edition, we’re introducing the United Brotherhood of Carpenters’ Career Connections curriculum to three schools on Oahu. Our hope is that we can offer the teaching and work experience that will prepare students to enter our apprenticeship program immediately after graduating. While the first class won’t be ready until 2020, they will, by then, have the knowledge necessary to immediately become apprentices.

We’re very excited about the future of our program and assure you that we will continue to seek new ways to strengthen our education, training, recruitment, and retention efforts.

A total of 122 journeymen received their certificates of completion in May, marking the completion of their 8,000 hours of work and study and the beginning of a new chapter in their careers.

Eighty-six carpenter journeymen and 36 drywall journeymen have completed their apprenticeships as of this spring.

Many of them participated in a May 13 completion ceremony held by the Hawaii Carpenters Apprenticeship and Training Fund at the Kapolei training center. They were joined by family members and friends for the morning festivities.

The journeymen were congratulated by Edmund C. Aczon, executive director of the program; Ron Taketa, secretary-treasurer of the Hawaii Regional Council of Carpenters; Conrad Murashige, representing the contractors; Linda Chu Takayama, director of the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations; and Erika Lacro, chancellor of Honolulu Community College. Emcee was Gina Mangieri of KHON TV News.

Apprenticeship Training to Reach High SchoolersThe Hawaii Carpenters Apprenticeship and Training Fund has formed a partnership with the Department of Education and others to encourage high school students to pursue careers in the building trades.

The program, entitled Career Connections, is based on a curriculum developed by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters’ International Training Center.

It will be introduced in three public schools during the coming fall semester, Kahuku, McKinley, and Waianae. If successful, the curriculum will be expanded to other schools.

The first class will be limited to no more than 15 sophomores at each school. They will be taught using a curriculum that involves classroom learning and hands-on experience. Teaching materials include textbooks, teacher guides, and other material developed by the Carpenters.

During the summer of their junior years, these students will be given on-the-job summer internships. By the time they are seniors, they will be preparing for their post-graduation careers while also mentoring incoming sophomores.

Students will receive high school credit as well as community college credit. The most significant incentive is that students who complete the three-year program will be granted direct entry to the apprenticeship program without having to go through the screening process.

In addition to the Apprenticeship Fund and DOE, other partners include the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations’ Workforce Development Division, University of Hawaii and Honolulu Community College, Castle Foundation, and the Pacific Resource Partnership, among others.

Edmund C. Aczon, program executive director, said, “We’re very excited about this collaboration with the DOE and the promise Career Connections holds to produce future generations of construction workers. In the old days, students maybe took a woodworking class or two. But the work environment has gotten so much more sophisticated, so much more technical, that more skills training is necessary.

“If we can stimulate our young people to pursue their interests, as well as give them incentives to develop their knowledge, skills, and experience early in their lives, it would give them a tremendous head-start on their careers. We have the capability and opportunity to help our young people now and into the future, and that’s why we are all very enthused about this new partnership.”

This initiative is one part of a larger strategy by the Department of Education to involve business and education groups in preparing students for high-skill, in-demand jobs. Called Connect to Careers (C2C), the effort calls for industry-led identification of entry-level skills and employability qualities and collaboration on degrees and certifications to prepare students. The schools will coordinate relevant learning programs to answer those needs. Both sides will examine and evaluate the results.

The Connect to Careers effort was unveiled at a news conference held in April at the Kapolei training center. Representatives of the participating organizations attended.

Aczon described C2C as a valuable partnership for the Apprenticeship Fund and said he’s excited about the opportunities it will provide to help Hawaii’s young people.

Connect to Careers was announced at a news conference held at the Kapolei training center. Participating partners included, from left: Sherry Menor-McNamara, Hawaii Chamber of Commerce; Linda Chu Takayama, Department of Labor and Industrial Relations; Ron Taketa, Hawaii Regional Council of Carpenters; Senator Michelle Kidani; Kathryn Matayoshi, Superintendent of Education; Leslie Wilkins, Maui Economic Development Board; Edmund Aczon, Apprenticeship Fund; Representative Mark Nakashima; Suzanne Mulcahy, Assistant Superintendent of Education; and Terry George, Castle Foundation.
