Holiday Shop Opens for Business November 22nd - December 1st

news from the Edge November 2010

www.pennsbury.k12.pa.us page 2

The Holiday Shop enables the children of Edgewood to purchase gifts for the special people in their lives during the holiday season. The “departments” at the shop are Gals, Guys, Kids and Cats/Dogs. Items are priced from $1.00-$5.00. There are gifts for all the special people in your child’s life - parents, grandparents, siblings, cousins, friends, aunts, uncles, and pets!

During the week of November 15th, each child will receive a Budget Envelope to use in planning his/her shopping day. Each child should bring the envelope to school on the day he/she is to attend the shop.

A shopping schedule, which shows the day and time each class will be shopping, will be distributed with the envelope. The shopping schedule will also be available on the PTO website under a special Holiday Shop section - look for the snowman!

We need volunteers. If you haven’t already signed up to volunteer, it’s not too late! Please email Andrea Appolonia at [email protected] with your availability. We need volunteers for morning and afternoon shifts. This event requires a lot of helping hands to make it successful, so please volunteer!!!

We will once again open the

Holiday Shop on our last day, Wednesday, December 1st from 3:30-4:30 for older/younger siblings, parents, and staff to shop. This is a great opportunity to pick up small pol-lyanna presents and stocking stuffers! Don’t forget to sign in at the office and make your way to the gym for this fun event.

Questions? Contact Andrea Appolonia ([email protected]), Traci Curtis ([email protected]), Tamie Palatine ([email protected]), or Amy Waters ([email protected]).

Don’t forget to send your child with a reusable shopping bag. Thanks!

Wreaths Across America Sponsor a Wreath in Remembrance and in Honor of our SoldiersWe had a great school assembly to help kick-off Wreaths Across America, and Edgewood is off to a great start! Please sponsor a wreath in remembrance and in honor of our soldiers.

An Invitation to Our Edgewood FamiliesAn evening to remember—like the 4th of July in December!

We are inviting all of you to welcome and cheer the Wreaths Across America Patriot Guard motorcade as they drive up to Edgewood Elementary on Thursday, December 9, 2009.

Come and join in a special ceremony in the gym honoring our past and present veterans and Wreaths Across America. We will also be providing dinner like we did last year for the Patriot Guard, so be on the look-out for an email on how you can help.

If you have any questions, please contact AnniMaria Babel at 215-321-5260. Thank you.

Thank You!

Fall Book Fair Huge Success!

Thank you to all the Edgewood families who supported this year’s Scholastic book fair. The event raised $3,420 for our school! We al-so raised $120 for the One for Books program, which means Scholastic will donate 120 books to schools in need, plus $120 in books for Edgewood’s library. A special thanks to all the parent volunteers – we could not have done it without you!

Please plan ahead so that students have every opportunity to perform at their best. Dress Appropriately for School

Please remember to refer to page 6 of the Student Conduct Policy for specific information on the dress code. Some items to remember are no flip-flops, tank tops, short shorts/skirts, or any clothing that exposes the midriff. No open-backed shoes are permitted for safety reasons. Students participate in recess daily. Shoes must be safe. Students not adhering to the dress code will be asked to call home for a change of clothes, or visit the nurse for something more ap-propriate to wear. Your help and cooperation with this is greatly appreciated.

Morning Modular Drop-off Please remember that the morning drop-off area by the modulars is a DrOP OFF ArEA ONLy. Please do not pull to the side or pull into a parking space by the modulars. This is creating unsafe congestion and slowing down the morn-ing arrival. If you need to drop something off, or write that last minute note, please park on Oxford Valley road so that morning traffic can flow smoothly. Thank you for your help in keeping all students safe as they arrive to school.

Arrive to School on TimePlease remember that school begins at 9:00. Many of our busses arrive by 8:45. We encourage all parents to use the bus whenever possible. Not only will your child be ready for the start of the day, but you will also be helping the environment. Teachers utilize this time for morning work and organizational time to prepare students for the start of the day. Students arriving past 9:00 will be considered tardy. You must sign your child in at the main office if your child is late for school. Morning announcement begin at 9:00 with instruction starting right after that. If your child is late for school they might be missing math, reading, or writing instruction. Your help and cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Reminder Please remember that no Rolling Backpacks are permitted at Edgewood due to safety concerns. Your help with this is greatly appreciated.

Holiday Teacher Appreciation Baking Volunteers Needed! The Teacher Appreciation Committee is gearing up for its first BIG event of the year - holiday cookie trays for the Edgewood teachers and staff. Get out those aprons, mixers, and cookie trays because we need LOTS of homemade cookies to keep this annual tradition going! Each volunteer should plan on baking 3 dozen cookies. We’d love to have a large variety of cookies - the more bakers, the better!! Help us show our appreciation for our teachers and staff at this festive time of year.

If you are interested in baking, please contact Aby Armbruster at [email protected] or Corinne Rossi at [email protected] or 215-321-4000 by December 10th!

Experiment with this year’s Science Fair!

You do not have to be a science whiz to partici-pate. Part of the fun comes through the learning process, and now is a great time to start thinking about what sort of project you might like to do.

A science fair project is one of the best learning experiences a student can undertake. Now is a great time for students to think about what topics interest them or to make note of questions that could form the basis of their science fair project.

Students can perform an experiment at home and present the results at our annual event on February 24th, 2011. Last year we had more than 200 student participants with others attending to learn from their peers! Watch for helpful hints and resources in the next newsletter.

Students can begin signing up in January. Contact Beth Brunette ([email protected]) for information about how to get started or how to join the Science Fair Committee.

Grundy Skate Out!

Do you like to ice skate? Have you ever wanted to try? Looking for something fun to do on a day off from school? Well, join us on January 27 at Grundy Ice Arena in Bristol, PA. Edgewood will be there 12:15pm-2:15pm. Tickets will be $10 per person and include skate rental. Grundy’s snack bar will be open so you won’t even have to stop somewhere else for lunch on your way down. Look for more informa-tion about buying tickets in January right after our winter break. Any questions, please contact Sue Cohen at [email protected]

Cash-Back Programs—It’s a Piece of CakeDid you know that during the 2009-2010 school year, Edgewood raised $6,800 through our passive fundraising programs?! Here are some easy and very effective ways you can help make some real dough for Edgewood. The money earned from these cash-back programs helps pay for things like assemblies, assignment books, and technology.

Send it in with your child

Box tops for educationCut around the dotted lines of the “Box Tops For Education” emblem on many common products and send them in with your child in an en-velope or baggy. Each top is worth $.10. If each Edgewood family sent in only 20 a year, the PTO would make $1,000 from Box Tops alone! Last year we made $1,800.

labels for educationCut the UPC from Campbell’s prod-ucts and send them in with your child in an envelope or baggy. Points are accumulated for Edgewood to purchase educational materials for the school.

Mccaffrey’s receiptsSave your receipts from McCaffrey’s Supermarkets and send them in with your child in an envelope or a baggy. The PTO receives 1% of all receipt totals. If each Edgewood family purchased $100 worth of McCaffrey’s grocer-ies each year, the PTO would make $500 from McCaffrey’s alone! Last year we raised $2,100.

PurchaSing Power

target’s take charge of education ProgramEvery time you shop at Target or Target.com with your rEDcard, 1% of your purchase goes to Edgewood. Make sure you designate your rEDcard to Edgewood school (#90529). Last year we raised $1,600.

gift card ProgramPurchase gift cards through our program and Edgewood gets 2-15 % of the face value of the gift card depending on the retailer. Hundreds of retailers participate in this program including Starbucks, Home Depot, and Barnes & Noble.

Box tops online “click through” MarketPlace If you purchase items online, think about going to the BoxTops website first (boxtops4education.com) and “clicking” through to your favorite retailer’s website. Edgewood receives a percentage of every sale. There are over 100 retailers that participate in this program including Target, Oriental Trading, and the Gap.

go green and edgewood getS green

recycle Juice PouchesEdgewood is collecting empty juice pouches (not boxes)! This is a great way to get children involved in recycling. If we collect 100 empty pouches a week, we could save over 3,500 from being dumped into landfills in one year! We earn $.02 for each pouch collected. A specially marked container is in the cafeteria. It’s that easy! Drink to that!

aBitiBi Paper recycling BinPlease recycle your household paper in our green and yellow recycling bin located in the front parking lot. The school is actively recycling all its paper too! Help us fill up those bins! Money raised benefits the Edgewood Student Council. No phonebooks or cardboard please!

We’re hungry for your support…Please take part in these important cash-back fundraising programs and help make this year another sweet success! For more information on our Cash Back Programs and to see how we’re doing, go to the Edgewood PTO website.
