The Joint 6NET-Euro6IX Workshop was held on 5 June 2002 in conjunction with the TERENA Networking Conference 2002 in Limerick, Ireland. The objective of the workshop was to publicise the 6NET and Euro6IX project activities, as well as to discuss IPv6 developments elsewhere. It also provided an opportunity for feedback from the European research networking community. The organisation of the event was led by TERENA’s Kevin Meynell. The workshop programme started with presentations on the two large projects that hosted the event, 6NET and Euro6IX. Bruno Ciscato of Cisco explained that 6NET is a three-year project in the European Union’s Information Society Technologies Programme which is building a native IPv6 based network with both static and mobile components in order to gain experience of IPv6 deployment and migration from existing IPv4 based networks. 6NET exploits the synergy between the European national research and education networks and major industrial partners, and co-operates with other IPv6 projects and activities, both in Europe and elsewhere in the world. The Euro6IX project was introduced by Jordi Palet Martinez of Consulintel. Euro6IX is also a three-year IST project; it is researching appropriate architectures and will deploy the first pan-European network of Internet Exchanges. This infrastructure will then be used to investigate, test and validate IPv6 based applications and services in conjunction with specific user groups. Bernhard Fabianek of the European Commission followed on from the two introductory presentations by sketching the future perspectives of European initiatives on IPv6. The workshop programme presented a great many aspects of IPv6 development and deployment. Steve Deering of Cisco gave an update on the IPv6 standardisation work in the Internet Engineering Task Force. Antonio Gomez Skarmeta of the University of Murcia discussed Public Key Infrastructure and Virtual Private Network services based on IPv6. Juan Quemada of the Polytechnical University of Madrid presented the IPv6 version of ISABEL, an advanced and well-known multi-conferencing system. Guy Almes of Internet2 gave an update on IPv6 deployment on the Abilene network in the United States. Sathya Rao of Telscom Consulting discussed the IPv6 cluster activities in the European Union’s 5th Framework Programme. Other presentations were given by Pedro Ruiz of Agora Systems, Carlos Ralli Ucendo of Telefonica, Thomas Scheffer of T-Systems Nova and Paolo Pastorino of Telecom Italia. Christian Müller-Böhm of the University of Münster presented the deployment of IPv6 on the German national research network DFN. Harald Alvestrand of Cisco discussed IPv6 and the Internet applications suite. The workshop concluded with a 45-minutes session where the audience was invited to put questions to a panel consisting of Harald Alvestrand, Steve Deering, Bernhard Fabianek and Jordi Palet Martinez. This proved very productive with many topics of interest being covered.
