Town Hall News Wants and Needs

This week, our classroom focused on wants and needs. This is the first time I have covered this topic in my class, so I wasn’t real sure that the children would take to the concept.

We started out our discussions with the word “needs”. We defined “needs” as meaning anything that we need to be alive. During our discussion, we made a word web. The word web will help remind us in the future what a “need” is. Though I wasn’t expecting it, we ended up adding “love” to our needs

Words so far: the, can, my, you, see, is, like, and, play, we , at, go, run, to, have, how, on, up ,went, got, but, want & need.

We then focused on “wants”. These were much easier to define by thinking to ourselves, “Do we need it to live?” when we thought of something. We also discussed how we can save money to get the things we want.

Next week we will talk about fairness, unity and peacefully working out problems as we focus on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr..

One of our classroom expectations is to respect ourselves and others while doing our work. We do the work we are capable of doing, and make sure to leave others alone so that they can do the same.
