The New PHIUS+ 2015 Climate‐Specific Standard Has Launched It's official! After three years of extensive research together with input from the U.S. DOE and the public, the Passive House Institute U.S. has launched its new climate‐specific standard for North America. Known as the PHIUS+ 2015 Passive Building Standard, it was tailored to address several concerns about the old PHIUS standard. The new standard will also give recognition to projects that achieve any of these two additional criteria: Meet 100% of the modeled heating and cooling loads via the ventilation system supply air (low peak load design); and Meet source net zero energy (through onsite renewable energy generation) Be sure to visit www.phius.org to get full details of what the new Passive Building standard entails and to find out what certification criteria apply to your location. Framing The Window Debate ‐ European vs. North American Performance As many Passive House designers will tell you, picking the right windows for a project can be a challenge. One of the big questions often pondered is whether importing windows all the way from Europe is worth the added cost for the increase in thermal performance. What is not always understood is that the methods used for quantifying performance are different in Europe than they are in North America. Therefore simply looking at the advertised window U‐values does not allow for an apples to apples comparison. Fear not! For this excellent and very thorough report on International Window Standards by RDH will help you to understand the differences between the ISO, Passive House and NFRC/CSA window rating systems.

Framing The Window Debate ‐ European vs. North American Performance

As many Passive House designers will tell you, picking the right windows for a project can be a challenge. One of the bigquestions often pondered is whether importing windows all the way from Europe is worth the added cost for the increasein thermal performance. What is not always understood is that the methods used for quantifying performance aredifferent in Europe than they are in North America. RDH report on International Window Standards

Canada's First Multi‐Family Passive House Takes Shape

Located in Victoria, B.C., the North Park Passive House is Canada's first multi‐family Passive House project to be offeredon the market. Built by Bernhardt Contracting, the project is comprised of 6 two‐bedroom suites ranging from 655 to 1037sq. ft. in size that are priced starting at $295,000. The project is located in an area with top notch walk & bike scores (93& 90) and excellent access to public transit. Building amenities include roof‐top solar pv, an energy monitoring system, car‐share membership, and secure covered bicycle parking.

Not only does the North Park Passive House have a small environmental footprint, it is easy on the pocketbook too! Theestimated energy costs per suite come in at a miserly $15 ‐ $20 per month and strata fees between $120 ‐ $162 permonth, making it more affordable than owning a conventional home.

And now, for something completely unrelated!

The east coast of Canada is barely clinging on after one of the worst winters on record, while the west coast basks in thewarmth of an early spring. So CBC comedy show This Hour Has 22 Minutes decided to make light of the situation by releasingthe following two tourism ads.
