Cos d’Estournel, the Médoc grand cru classé, launched into the construction of a modern winery in 2008. Designed by architect Michel Wilmotte, the building revolutionised the way wineries and vat buildings were perceived by turning them into places to visit, stunning guests with a “sea” of barrels and a glass bridge standing above them. Unique in France, the winery also has four “elevator vats” designed for vat-to-vat drai- nage. Next we go to Saint-Emilion on our tour of “stylish” wineries, with Château Faugères in 2009 and Château Cheval Blanc since June 2011. Built as a kind of wine cathedral by architect Mario Botta, the winery building at Château Faugères stands out by its luminous tower overlooking the vineyard and its high-tech equipment designed to improve the quality of wine, for example a grape-sorting system using an optic system with a camera. Château Cheval Blanc, Saint-Emilion premier cru classé, has recently inaugurated its new vat-house created by architect Christian de Portzamparc. With simple lines and lots of light, it looks like a futurist vessel, or a gigantic hill with, at the top, a landscaped roof garden covering more than 6 000 m2, offering an unobstructed view over the village of Saint-Emilion. You can see the winery from the road, but it is not open for visits. These new facilities undeniably modernise the winemaking process whilst adopting an aesthetic approach which will to appeal to first-time visitors and experienced wine tourists alike. Collection of tours at Château Soutard in Saint-EmilionFollowing a series of improvementsand conversions in the vineyards andthe buildings, Château Soutard, Saint-Emilion grand cru classé, is open tothe public with a “collection” ofguided or unaccompanied tours.

With the aid of an illustrated, entertaining andeducational map, visitors can wander aroundthe estate and follow any one of threethemed circuits on offer: Safari trek, toobserve the vineyard’s wildlife, Poetic trip, todiscover and play with the names of vineplots, and Ampelographik, a walk in the foots-teps of the vine-growing manager. For a more in-depth look at the estate(whose emblem is a pearl necklace), six visitsare also on offer to wine tourists, be theyalone, in groups, with friends or family. Thesevisits are at the château, in the winery, and inthe vineyard. As well as the traditional tour and tastingsession, the château organises a visit at dusk,half a day with the vine-growing manager orcellar-master, a visit exclusively for kids, andtwo culinary events for food-wine pairings.Appointment required for these visits.

Before leaving this lovely estate, you shouldpay a visit to the shop and buy a souvenir. Cookery workshops with a chef in BordeauxAfter a career as a teacher then achef in numerous restaurants in theBordeaux region, Jesus Hurtado orga-nises cookery classes at his home inBordeaux.

Step back into the pastat Manoir de Gisson inSarlatIn the old town of Sarlat, the capitalof Black Périgord and truffles, it is nowpossible to visit Manoir de Gisson, theorigins of which go back to the 13th

century.

A listed historic monument, this building isone of the most remarkable edifices in themedieval town of Sarlat. The manor house’stower which joins the two buildings togetherhouses a superb hexagonal staircase. For thefirst time in its history it is now open forvisits. In the first part of the tour, visitors step back

in time and discover the world of the 17th-century bourgeoisie with a visit to the furni-shed apartments of the prestigious Gissonfamily, whose members were variously townconsuls, infantry officers, knights of the Orderof Saint-Louis, royal notaries and counsel forthe town. The second part of the visit conti-nues in the rest of the apartments and in the

vaulted cellars, where a temporary exhibitionon the history of justice from the Middle Agesto the French Revolution is on show,displaying a collection of objects used in theexercise of justice – including some authentictorture instruments. Manoir de Gisson/History of Justice is openevery day of the year and offers one-hourtours with guidebooks written in sixlanguages: English, German, Spanish, Italian,Dutch and French.

Customised boat tripson the Bay of ArcachonThe pinasse is the traditional boat ofthe Bay of Arcachon and Gascony,initially designed for oyster farmingand fishing, and now used for leisure.

Les Pinasses du Bassin d’Arcachon offer guidedexcursions in unspoilt natural settings onboard five brightly-coloured, comfortablepinasse boats. Several themed circuits of lasting two tothree hours are available, created in partner-ship with the tourist offices: Villages of CapFerret Peninsula and the Ile aux Oiseaux, From

Port to Port around the Leyre Delta and Discoverthe Oyster Farming Ports, also including a visitto a shipyard.

The pinasses have a capacity of 10 to 17people and can be rented by the half day, dayor for 2 or 3-hour sessions. Then all you haveto do is decide on the route and the time foryour picnic, or let your guide show the way. Themed circuits from €30 per person. Placesare limited and it is best to book with thetourist offices.For private rentals of an 11-seater pinasse fora customised tour, count on €250 for twohours and from €600 for a day.

Stand Up Paddle: a newway of seeing the Bay ofArcachonThe Bay of Arcachon can now also bediscovered by Stand Up Paddle, stan-ding on a long board with a paddle inhand. It is very stable thanks to theweight of the board, as well as beingenvironmentally friendly and ideal forall the family.

Stand Up Paddle en Pays de Buch proposes fourcircuits for excursions between the Bay ofArcachon and the Lake of Cazaux: • The itinerary along the Dune du Pilat runsalong the beach of Le Petit Nice and the

Corniche. It offers panoramic views of thewhole Bay, with the Dune du Pilat on one sideand Banc d’Arguin on the other. • To discover the oyster-farming areas, a visitalong the south side of the Bay of Arcachonbetween Le Pyla and the oyster port ofGujan-Mestras is also possible. • The Leyre Delta circuit, meanwhile, takesyou further inland to discover the very parti-cular plant and wildlife of the delta with itsmix of salt and fresh water. • On the border between Gironde andLandes, the Lake of Cazaux itinerary is theeasiest, sheltered from tide and winds.

Discovering the islands ofthe estuary in a taxi-boatGens d’Estuaire are the specialists intourism on the Gironde Estuary andnow also offer taxi boat services onthe Garonne to discover the estuaryislands and Bordeaux wine châteaux.

The association has recently started organi-sing culture and tourism excursions in taxiboats between Bordeaux and the Médoc,including visits to the islands or châteaux,meals and tastings of local produce and wines. The taxi boat goes by the name Silnet andoffers safe, fast trips (35 knots) in all weather.

It can moor directly at the foot of thechâteaux. On board, there are two areas fromwhich you can take in the landscape: an open

terrace area to the rear and a 12-seatherglazed cabin. It takes one hour to get toPauillac in the Médoc from Bordeaux.For an exclusive experience, it is possible torent the taxi boat privately and board 12people for a customised cruise.It is an original and pleasant alternative tothe car for visiting the islands in the estuaryand the great vineyards of the Médoc, Blaye,Libourne, Graves and the Entre-Deux-Mers.

Sail away on an eco-bargeSince June 2011, Kevin, a solar-powered barge close to 30 metres inlength, has been playing host to visi-tors for stays ranging from weekendsto over 20 days on the River Lot, offe-ring “zero carbon” travel.

Discover noiseless, environmentally-friendlytourism on the waterways, thanks toDominique Renouf and a 12-person eco-barge with six double cabins. Fitted with solarpanels on the roof, the hotel boat is driven bysolar electric power and generates no pollu-tion. It is also a rarity in that it offers full

On the programme this year, on the theme of “urban re-evolution” avoyage of discovery in four different ways: • The Racines project comprising three exhibitions in the city’smuseums will present the creative concept of EVENTO 2011.• The Shared Knowledge Workshops are artistic creation laboratorieswhere artists and citizens mix and create together, while also taking alook at their city.• The Mobile Workshop is a sort of recording studio moving aroundthe city and investigating and collecting what people have to say aboutthe concept of urban re-evolution, to make a daily EVENTO report.• Artistic events (concerts, installations, performances, debates…)again this year to bring together the public and personalities from theworlds of literature, urban planning, economics and politics on andaround the theme of art for an urban re-evolution.

Like the artists who have been invited to offer a new insight into the city,explore it and transform it into an atypical artistic experience, visitorscan make their way around the city in search of art and different visionsof urban re-evolution, and thus become participants in the event.
