The light that is streaming through air all round,

Which, sparkling and gleaming and gleaming, now warms the earth’s

ground

Reveals the stars’ handwork where flowers abound.

And, wondrous and radiant, an Angel I see.

He shines with God’s light and he smiles upon me.

It is I! He it is whom I one day will be,

In my heavenly mantle, from darkness set free!

NEWS FROM THE CLASSROOM ______________________________________________________________________________

EARLY CHILDHOOD CHATTER This week the Rainbow children recycled used paper to make beautiful decorated sheets of handmade paper. Mel, mother of Carla and Remi, generously gave of her time this afternoon (Monday) to work with the Rainbow children. It was a glorious afternoon. The children drifted in and out, joining in the various preparatory tasks of tearing and chopping the waste paper. Each child made a piece of paper and most helped with the cleaning up as well, so they will all be experts on her next visit. The Kindy care children dropped in too with Sheoaka. The older children played with them very gently and they too had a crack at diving their frame into the paper pulp. Mel plans to return on a couple more occasions to finish this project. Thank you Mel for your help. Please feel free to collect your child’s slippers now, as the weather is warm enough most mornings for us not to need them. The same is probably true for the raincoats. Hats, however, are a necessity. Please make sure your child has one every day. The plans and logistics for the new kindergarten building continue, most of it done by volunteers, who can be seen measuring and fence lines, drawing plans and having meetings. Our thanks go to all those who give so generously of their time in this area. See you all at the Curriculum Journey on Friday. Remember to let Hayley know if you need childcare so we have enough babysitters. Thank you and see you there. Jo

Last Friday was a mammoth day for the wonderful Wayfarers who were at Perth Waldorf School bright and early for the 2014 Greek Olympics. Congratulations to all the class fives for your spectacular efforts over the day in all nine events: javelin, discus, wrestling, marathon, sprint, middle distance, relay, chariot racing and long jump. The sun shone, the competition was fabulous, training was put to the test and new friends were made. The students from four different Steiner schools in WA were mixed up together to form city teams - Athens, Sparta, Delphi and Corinth, and with the emphasis on participation - we all had a ball! Thank you Wayfarers for the heart and beautiful spirit you put into the event. Class sixes were loud and enthusiastically vocal in the cheering of their classmates! It was a special, memorable day. Thank you parents for driving children to the venue, and Katie, phew, thank you for the sewing and lovely medals.

SILVER TREE CRAFT We are so lucky at Silver Tree to have such a beautiful, considered and consolidated craft program. It's built on a dedication to encourage aspects of learning such as persistence and will power in the children, together with a focus on co-operative learning, sharing of ideas, and appreciation of nature’s resources and a love of creating beautiful things.

In a pragmatic sense though, there is very real evidence emerging to suggest that it supports the physical growth of our children. Matti Bergstrom, a professor and neurophysiologist from Sweden believes that activities such as traditional craft work, are critical to the overall brain development of our children. He argues that the density of nerve endings in our finger tips is enormous and if these are not used in childhood we become “finger-blind”. The rich network of nerves becomes impoverished and this represents a huge loss to the brain, thwarting a child’s over all development. Matti likens this kind of damage to blindness. Age-old traditions understood the need to work creatively with fingers and hands but in Western society today we are losing this knowledge rapidly.

Craft for me is a deeply nourishing part of the Steiner curriculum. We hold our craft lessons in a circle, in the symbol of community. As each child works on a project they bring new bursts of creativity that enriches the experience for everyone involved. Craft then is about devotion. It is a space that so beautifully holds the ‘reverent’ and the meaningful. It is so much more than the end product. It is a process of blossoming for the students and a journey of challenge and triumph. Melissa, Craft Teacher

DARLINGTON ARTS FESTIVAL Silver Tree Class 4, 5 and 6

Will be performing on SUNDAY 2nd NOVEMBER

11:00 - 11:30am - MAIN STAGE Darlington Arts Festival

(Please be at the stage at 10:30am)

WALK TO SCHOOL DAY Our Walk to School Day last week started with the problem of navigating an increasingly agitated mother kangaroo separated from her baby by a fence. Everyone was very concerned for the terrified baby kangaroo which in its panic could not find the gap in the fence. Fiona guided the children in a wide berth round the baby, then gently encouraged it to hop along the fence line to the gap. To our relief, mother and baby bounded away into the bush, and our walk could start! Silver Tree children listened to an interesting talk by Bronwyn who had brought along snakeskins, feathers, cockatoo-nibbled gumnuts and other bush treasures, then we were off. What a stunning walk we had through the bush. This photo says it all - what a way to start the day! Thank you parent volunteers who came along to hold hands and keep us all on track!

SCENES FROM AN UNSEEN WORLD

A ritual for place a dramatic event not to be missed presented by The Life Map Students of Rudolf Steiner College

Sunday 7th December 5.30 pm or Friday 12th December 5.30 pm at Silver Tree Steiner School. Suitable for audiences 15 years and over

‘Here the Earth is inventive, prolific. She fashions her ideas out of fire and salt and wind, stitches all her garments with the strongest light. Her memories are kept in the blood of trees.’

RUDOLF STEINER COLLEGE PRESENTS THE TIME MAP Foundation Studies in Anthroposophy 2015 - A transformative journey, enrolments open now.

Rudolf Steiner created a number of maps that can help us understand the life cycles of the world and how they relate to our own life. These maps encompass the past and the future. They orientate us, enabling us to work constructively now. They are the essential, guiding tools for teachers working in Steiner Education and anyone who wants to work creatively in the world. In this part-time course participants will learn the art of intuitive thinking, develop their capacity to think in pictures, distinguish styles in art and understand the religious and philosophic impulses working in different times. They will explore the history of ideas, the great stories, myths and artworks that have shaped the world, as well as their own biography. Students will learn how to write imaginatively and develop artistic expression in speech, tonal awareness, movement, painting and sculpture. In 2015: Tuesday evenings at Silver Tree School, Parkerville, plus two Saturdays per term (concurrent course at Bibra Lake on Wednesday evenings). For more information visit www.rudolfsteinercollege.com.au or contact Jennifer Kornberger [email protected]

DONATIONS FOR BALI WANTED PLEASE Robin Lim is an internationally-recognized midwife, well-known author and talented poet. Her non-profit Indonesian birthing and educational clinics have saved hundreds of lives and delivered thousands of babies over the last decade, serving the poor and medically disenfranchised citizens of Bali and, far away, in the tsunami-ravaged province of Aceh, Sumatra. After 13 years of service and frequent financial challenges, "Ibu" (Mother) Robin and her organisation remain indefatigably committed to changing the world, one gentle birth at a time. Some of you may be aware of Robin Lim (2011 CNN hero of the year) and her Bumi Sehat birth centers in Indonesia. If not look her up, she is amazing! I will be taking a bag of supplements to the Bali clinic and am asking for your help to fill it. The request is for women's and children's multi-vitamins and spirulina, any brands are better than what is available there. You will be supporting a really worthwhile foundation so thank you for helping if you are able. Also if you would like to donate good quality clean clothing, please pop it in the bag and it will be given to children who really need it. Thanks again, Bonnie
