This month’s cloze test is about a new lock that was invented last year – and a very smelly one at that. We’ve made it a bit trickier by taking out 8 words. This is called a cloze test. Read through the words in the black box first and make sure you understand them. Then, read through the article. Make sure you think about the best place to put a word, not the first place. Careful as you go, as some words may fit in a few places, while other words will only suit one place.

The Skunk Lock

Inventors in San Francisco have come up with a new lock to help tackle the city's problem with bicycles being stolen.

The Skunk Lock is an ordinary U-shaped _____________ with one very extraordinary difference. When thieves attempt to cut through it, it releases an odour so foul, it will make them vomit!

Within the lock, there is a small ____________ containing a chemical. When the lock is is broken, the disgusting chemical is blasted straight onto the _____________.

It sticks to skin and _____________ until it's washed out. But the manufactures say it will not cause long-term damage to people's ______________.

Although the Skunk Lock can be broken like any other lock, inventor Daniel Idzkowski says it will definitely cause thieves to think _______________ before taking it on.

'All that really matters is that the SkunkLock makes it too difficult to be worth trying,' said _______________.

Daniel and his partner are asking people online to help finance the project, which they hope to launch next _________________.

There are around 5,000 cases of bike theft or attempted theft in San Francisco every year. Time will tell if Skunk Lock is the answer!

This month’s Editing Activity is based on a story from last year about an ancient fruitcake discovered in the Antarctic! Read through the article and see if you can spot the 10 spelling mistakes and 5 missing capitals. Then, when you do, in your best handwriting, re-write the article and illustrate it.

Fruitcake Fossil!

A frute cake belonging to a doomed expedition in the Antarctic 106 years ago has been found by modern explorers. And it's still OK to eat! Well, almost ...

The cake was found in a hut used by british explorers during the rase to be the first to reach the South pole between 1911 and 1912! The team was led by Robert falcon Scott, who eventually perished with his men in the unforgiving cold.

The Huntley and Palmers fruitcake was rapped in paper inside a rusted tin. However, when conservators from the Antarctic Heritage Trust examind the food, they found it was 'almost edible'.

High energee food is a must in the Antarctic. Nutritionists say that people working there should consume around 6,000 calories a day. Normully, the calorie count for an adult stands at around 2,000.

As it hapened, Captain Scott never got to eat his cake. And so it staid on the shelf for over a century!

fruitcake is known for 'keeping' or 'not going off' for a very long time. In this case, it was also helped by the naturally frozen climat, which acted like a giant fridge!

However, the Trust team did say that there 'was a very, very slight rancid butter smell to it'. So insted of eating it, they sent it to new Zealand for further testing!

To solve a sudoku puzzle, each row (lines going across) of nine squares must contain the numbers 1 through 9. Each

column (lines going down) must also contain the numbers 1 through 9, and each box (outlined with the thick black lines)

must contain the numbers 1 through 9. If you are starting off, it might be best to use a pencil.

Book reviews are all about what YOU thought of a book. They don’t tell the story, and they certainly don’t give away the ending. Your sentences could begin with:

I thought … I liked when … My favourite part was when … I found … I didn’t like … I laughed when … and so on.

When you start your review with these sentence starters, you know you are talking about what you thought, not just what happened. Don’t forget to email your book reviews to [email protected]. Just ask your teacher or parent for help
