Campus Leaders

2019 brought with it an incredible opportunity for personal growth, the excitement of learning, the adventure of trying new things and the richness of building relationships. As the boys and girls left both campuses for their summer holidays it seemed like just yesterday that they were arriving for their first day of the year. But their physical growth and developed emotional maturity is clear. Once again we are fulfilled and blessed to have joined your child in their journey this year. As students departed, when asked “What was your highlight of the year?” their responses were many and varied. At Notre Dame they included: Project Days were a curriculum highlight; House and SACCSS Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country Carnivals, SACCSS Golf and Tennis Tournaments, the Premier League competition and the DAV Debating. St Paul’s students identified many of the same events including: Project Days, House Competitions, ACC Sports, Swimming Carnival, Athletics Carnival, excursions, Camps, Retreats, Seminar days, Cross Country Carnivals, Soccer Academy, Student Leadership Programs, DAV Debating, Talent Quest and College production. The list went on and on. Such a variety of curricular, co–curricular and extracurricular activities ensured that there was something for everyone to be involved in and experience success. The student involvement in the extracurricular activities has been fantastic. Both campuses celebrated the end of the year with a Mass on 6 December. Also on that day at House Assemblies, the achievements of the students who were awarded a certificate in either Excellence in Academic Achievement or Personal Best Effort were recognised and presented. Congratulations to all the students who received Academic awards, either at the Celebration of Excellence Evening or at the House Assembly, and we encourage all students to work diligently next year to ensure their personal best. This year’s Inter–House Competition produced enthusiasm, a competitive spirit and house pride at both campuses. After a year of intense competition and great participation, the House Champions and House Spirit winners at Notre Dame go to Chaminade and Cassidy House respectively. The Orientation Day for the 2020 Year 7 students was a fantastic morning. It was great to see the smiling enthusiastic students who will be joining our community next year. At both campuses the House Assembly and Homeroom session ensured students were immersed in the culture and values of their House and made new acquaintances, and hopefully will feel a little more comfortable making the transition to Emmanuel College in the new year. Just a reminder, the first day of the 2020 school year for all levels is Friday 31 January. New Emmanuel College Uniform 2020 The College will be introducing a new school uniform for 2020. Both the girls and boys changes reflect an updated and more modern look for our students. This includes a new dress and double pleat skirt design, pant and short design options for boys and girls, new fabric in a more modern gender specific blazer, an optional cardigan or jumper and a new tie. The College sought student, parent and staff feedback when determining the look and design of the new uniform. New Year 7 students to the College will be required to wear the full new uniform from next year. As a response to parent feedback, current students will not need to change over if their uniform is in good order. Parents are reminded that it is a College expectation that their daughter or sons uniform fits correctly and is not shabby in appearance. It is anticipated that students will need to change over their uniform every three years due to growth and day to day wear and tear. Please also note that the spray jacket that was discontinued some years ago will no longer be acceptable as the sport jacket as of 2020. Current uniform items will no longer be available from Noone Imageware and students will be permitted to mix and match with new uniform as required. At the end of this newsletter is the last article from Michael Grose’s Parenting Ideas for 2019. This weeks article is about making a smooth transition to secondary school. Going to secondary school is both exciting and scary for many kids. There’s excitement about new friends, teachers and ventures, but this can be overshadowed by anxiety and stress. I would encourage you to take a moment to read this informative article. Thank you to all the students, parents and staff at Emmanuel College for what has been a fantastic year. We pray that all families experience holy days on their holidays and reflect on the true meaning of Christmas. We wish all families a very happy, safe and restful break. We look forward to your ongoing support in the education of your child in the New Year. Thank you very much for your kind words over the year and we’re looking forward to your continued support into 2020. David Barr & Chris O’Malley

Year 9 Project Week Friday 29 November saw our Year 9 students from both campuses commence their social justice project week. Day one they all headed into the CBD where they walked with their teachers and identified the hidden needs that exist in Melbourne today including homelessness and poverty. Day two on Monday 2 December, they followed a similar journey in the city where they followed the story of indigenous and their story over the last 200 years. The students attended the Koori Heritage Centre, MCG and Birrarung Marr to mention but a few. The final day the students had Scott Darlow talk to them about Indigenous culture and Andrew Kitchen discuss poverty and the need to make a difference. Thank you to all students and staff for making the three days such a great experience. Australian Catholic Youth Festival We wish our pilgrims luck during their time at the Australian Catholic Youth Festival in Perth. This will prove to be a wonderful experience for the 19 students and three staff who have headed off. Joining young Catholics from all over Australia, we hope our students will find fellow Catholics that they can connect with, share stories and embrace the opportunities that arise for them during their week away. Good luck to our pilgrims. College Chaplains As this is our final newsletter for the year, I would like to take the opportunity to sincerely thank our college chaplains who have been such a wonderful support in the faith dimension of the college. Thank you to Fr Greg Trythall, Fr John Healy, Fr Michael Kalka, Fr Paul Tru and Fr Binh Le for your continued support of our college masses and seminar days and Fr John O’Connor for supporting our canonical meetings. I know that your parish lives demand so much of all your time and we as a college truly appreciate you taking some of this precious time and sharing it with us. I would also like to thank you all for allowing us to join with your parishes on Sundays with students that have come from your parishes. I wish you all a safe and joyous Christmas. Moving Towards Advent The Christian season of Christmas actually begins on Christmas Eve and lasts for twelve days, ending on January 6. The time before Christmas is Advent, a season of preparation for Christmas. Christians prepare for celebrating the birth of Jesus by remembering the longing of the Jews for a Messiah. In Advent, we’re reminded of how much we ourselves also need a Saviour, and we look forward to our Saviour’s second coming even as we prepare to celebrate his first coming at Christmas. The word “Advent” comes from the Latin word adventus, which means “coming” or “visit.” In the season with this name, we keep in mind both “advents” of Christ, the first in Bethlehem and the second yet to come.

Prayer In this season of expectation we prepare to welcome Christ Jesus, Messiah Into the bustle of our lives and the hard to find moments of

olitude. We prepare to welcome Christ Jesus, Messiah into our homes and situations along with friends and families. We prepare to welcome Christ Jesus, Messiah into our hearts, and those often hidden parts of our lives. You entered this world as vulnerable as any one of us in order to nail that vulnerability to the cross. Our fears, our insecurities and our sins all that can separate us from God exchanged by your Grace for Love. We cannot comprehend the reasoning only marvel that Salvation comes to us through a baby born in a stable, and reaches out to a

world in need. Chris O’Malley

Going to secondary school is both exciting and scary for many kids. There’s excitement about new friends, teachers and ventures, but this can be overshadowed by anxiety and stress.

The sheer size of a high school building can be overwhelming to the uninitiated. The potential loss of status when moving from big fish in a small pond to tiny minnow in a large ocean can be hard to swallow for some. Add the increased number of teachers and the hormonal changes that accompany puberty and drive emotional and cognitive development and it is little wonder the first year of secondary school often sees a plateauing in learning. Most kids are flat out making new friends and getting used to how secondary school works, so learning takes a back seat for a time.

While it’s easier for those who have a brother or sister already there who can pass on some tips about how to survive secondary school, many don’t have that luxury. Fortunately, there are number of strategies parents can use to make the transition to secondary school easier.

1. Know the school space

Familiarity helps reduce anxiety. Most secondary schools have familiarisation programs for incoming students but it helps to reinforce with your young person where the key spaces are – such as administration, toilets, the tuck shop and drinking taps. A trip to the school during the holidays, if possible, can help reassure a nervous secondary school starter.

2. Make the leap with friends

Negotiating new friendships can be stressful so it helps to identify some friends from primary school or outside school that your child can travel with or meet up before school, at lunch breaks and during times when classes aren’t scheduled. This will give them the opportunity to share and compare experiences, which is therapeutic for kids who are experiencing change.

3. Help with planning and organisation

Some students can be overwhelmed by the organisational demands of secondary school. If your child fits this category, be prepared to be on hand to coach your young person in the finer arts of being on time to class, organising work in folders, planning homework time, handing in multiple assignments and filling out forms.

Page 14: News EMMANUEL OLLEGE OMMUNITY - Emmanuel College · 20/12/2019  · Emmanuel ollege in the new year. Just a reminder, the first day of the 2020 school year for all levels is Friday

4. Set up a designated study space in the home

Now that your young person has hit the big time it’s important that they have a study space to call their own. Keep this outside the bedroom if possible – the bedroom is a space for sleeping and relaxing. Use any area that is reasonably quiet and well lit. Set up a desk with a computer, if possible, along with stationery items.

5. Establish a work schedule

If your child’s primary school homework was given inconsistently then be prepared for a change. Most secondary schools try to coordinate homework between different teachers but there will be more times than not when your child will come home with multiple homework assignments to complete. Build the homework habit early and choose a regular time that allows for breaks. Encourage them to work quickly so that work does not drag on and become demotivating.

6. Stay patient and positive

The social and academic demands of going to secondary school can be mentally draining for young people. Some will miss old friends and the relative comfort of primary school. It’s important for parents to be patient with their young person, to expect a few behaviour blowouts and to be prepared to listen and help them process their new experiences. If your young person has negative experiences, point them in the direction of the good things that may happen during the day.

Your young person’s coping mechanisms are being tested during this time. They can change on a daily basis. If stress becomes overwhelming or persistent to the point that they don’t want to go to school after the initial settling-in period, consider organising some extra assistance. A year-level coordinator, school counsellor or the local doctor can be good starting points should extra assistance be needed.
