Our Lions year is quickly coming to a close . We hope you all had a great Christmas & New Year. December was a quiet month for us with no official Club visits to be done. Had the honour of presenting the Charter to the Leos Club in Collie. It was a great night and I’m sure we will be hearing a lot from them in the future. Following that night, had to then visit the Baldivis Club to induct another 2 new Members. This Club is going ahead in leaps and bounds. Apart from the web page, the majority of their new members come from their Markets. So all the clubs that have markets and your second hand sheds, I hope you are all pushing for new members in your areas. At the end of December, I was very disappointed to see that 17 Clubs had not done their December MMR reports, 5 had not done their November and December reports and another 3 had not done any reports since March. If Clubs are having problems getting their reports done, please contact Cabinet Secretary Margaret Amm for help. The Cabinet Secretary has the authority to go in and do your reports IF necessary. So please, don’t be afraid to ask for help. To all Club Treasurers, please remember it is now time to go onto the international site and print off your International Membership invoices. They are there ready and waiting for you to do so and then remember to pay them immediately. You don’t have to wait for your Club to authorise them. I hope all Clubs have now paid their first 6 month fees. The clubs all have a variety of projects and some are kept very busy. It was good to see that the majority of the Clubs had already done

    COUNCIL OF GOVERNORS’SMEETING SYDNEY18th, 19th and 20thJanuary 2019

Hello to all the Lions from our District 201W2. Our Lions year isquickly coming to a close . We hope you all had a great Christmas &New Year.

December was a quiet month for us with no official Club visits to bedone.

Had the honour of presenting the Charter to the Leos Club in Collie. Itwas a great night and I’m sure we will be hearing a lot from them in thefuture.

Following that night, had to then visit the Baldivis Club to induct another2 new Members. This Club is going ahead in leaps and bounds.Apart from the web page, the majority of their new members comefrom their Markets. So all the clubs that have markets and your secondhand sheds, I hope you are all pushing for new members in your areas.

At the end of December, I was very disappointed to see that 17 Clubshad not done their December MMR reports, 5 had not done theirNovember and December reports and another 3 had not done anyreports since March. If Clubs are having problems getting their reportsdone, please contact Cabinet Secretary Margaret Amm for help. TheCabinet Secretary has the authority to go in and do your reports IFnecessary. their constitutions and sent them in. Remember youonly have till June 2019 to get them in.

Your Global Leadership team has organised the startof training/information days/nights. Pleaseencourage all your members to attend them. Thefirst one next month is focussing on Members whohave been in Lions less than 10 years. Let us get afull quota at these sessions please and get theMembers names to 2VDG/GLT Dot Jacobs as perthe email sent last week.

Cabinet positions: I now have 2 vacancies to befilled. ZONE 3 Zone Chairman/person and now dueto family issues we need a new Children of CourageChairman/person. 2VDGE Stephen Berry is startingthe process of finding a suitable venue and gettingthe forms changed. As soon as you receive these, get them completed and sent in. The current datepicked is the first Sunday in April.

With the year going so quickly, please ensure yourCLUB ELECTIONS ARE DONE BY END MARCH2019. The PU101 form must be filled in with all thecorrect information and sent to our CABINETSECRETARY. You must also then go into theMyLCI site and enter all your new officers for thenew Lions year. This is required for the MultipleDistrict Directory and our own state diary. As thisinformation is also on the International site, it needsto be correct. This is how International is able tocontact all clubs direct. So Please, go online andcheck your club details are correct.

Our current membership figures have nowdecreased to 1378. This has mainly been due toClubs removing members who have not paid theirfees or have not been attending meetings orprojects. If members are unable to pay fees, whynot suggest that they are paid off monthly to easethe burden on them. I know not all Clubs havehealthy Admin. Accounts, but if members can pay alittle each month, it will help.

I cannot emphasize enough this message from thelast Newsletter. I have been learning of some issuesin Clubs that I thought this would not happen. Ifyour Club has such problems and needs help, please contact your Zonie first then the DG Team ifneeded. We are all here to help you.

“”There have been several instances ofinappropriate use of social media on theFacebook pages operated by Clubs. This hasincluded things such as derogatory commentsabout other members, bullying, and personalgrievances being played out in public. DistrictPR chairs have been reminded of the importance

of adopting and adhering to the Lions AustraliaSocial Media Policy.” That said, social media isan incredibly powerful and effective way of ussharing Lions Australia projects, to encouragepublic support and to increase membership –and it is to be encouraged.””

I’m sure this will be part of our Council of Governorsmeeting this month in Sydney. At the moment, Idon’t think it is a problem in our district. One pointthat will be brought up at Council is the dropping ofLion numbers in Australia. I can advise that thereare 10 Districts that are in transition (have less than1250 members). All Governors are getting emailsfrom head office on this and all their suggestions onhow to fix it. Please try and stop the Drops in yourown Clubs.

With Christmas over, I hope all Clubs were able tosell all their stock of cakes. I know my own clubsold out the Saturday before which was great as wehad ordered a second batch of tins and they wentquick. I will have more information when I returnfrom Sydney.

With the end of our Lions year only 5 months away,I can advise that all the GAT positions will becomevacant. 2VDG/GLT Dot Jacobs can’t continue inher position as she will not have time due to Clubvisits etc. IPDG/GST Grant Hewett is available tocontinue and GMT Rob Dedman will be standingdown due to family issues, so that needs to be filled. If you feel you are up for any of the positions, pleaselet me know. They are positions that need quite alot of effort and knowledge and a thoroughknowledge of the IT world, for the work needed foreach position. If you feel you may be suitable, pleasecontact myself or 1VDG Frank Camarri.

This week is the shutdown at Myalup Pines, so Ihope a few of you have been able to go up and heldand get a few of the jobs completed.

Please keep in mind in March 2019, when we willcelebrate the National Lions Awareness Day andyou will receive information in the coming monthsabout how we can celebrate the day and help toincrease the knowledge of non -members aboutLions and attract new members. I hope all Clubshave booked their date at Bunnings for the sausagesizzle. It has been suggested that you use that datefor your “Biggest BBQ” for the Australian LionsChildren’s Cancer Research Foundation. If yourequire any posters, please contact PDG Peter Lambwho is on the committee.

With our Lions year coming to a close in 5 months, don’t forget to acknowledge your members with

AUSTRALIAN LIONSCHILDREN’S MOBILITYFOUNDATIONDistrict Chairman – Lion Margaret Halford

Over the last few months there has been nochange in the status for ALCMF, no newchildren requiring assistance and noundesignated funds received. The only thing I have to report is that I went toAdelaide on 13 December 2018 and met withVaal Dix, former Trustee for WA. I took withme 14 kg of used stamps which were collectedfrom Clubs around WA, mainly from the W2Convention. Vaal was extremely pleased toreceive these and will add them to the nationalhaul. As Vaal had been my guiding Lion since takingon the position of District Chairman, I wasextremely pleased to meet with her and put aface to the voice on the phone. I thanked herfor all the help she had given me over the lastfew months. We now have another temporaryTrustee for WA who lives in Queensland.Vaal asked if I would be prepared to take onthe role of Trustee for WA but I deferred mydecision, as Bob and I were in the process oftransferring from the Lions Club of Mandurahto the Lions Club of Pinjarra, and were notsure what the future would bring.Whilst in Adelaide, I had the pleasure of takinga tour of the Australian Lions Hearing DogsTraining Facility and was also invited to go toMt Barker Shopping Centre with 2 trainers anddogs. One of the dogs was Gidget. She wasgiven to a couple at Rockingham, butunfortunately had to be sent back, not throughany fault of her own.

The institute's Professor Jonathan Shaw said thefinding suggests future demand for kidney dialy-sis and transplantation would place an enormousburden on Australia's healthcare system.

"We've known for a long time that the totalnumber of people requiring kidney dialysis ortransplantation was going up, but we thought thatwas mainly due to increasing numbers of peo-ple with diabetes," Professor Shaw said.

"The main concern is the increasing rate in theunder 50s.

"This is a really troubling finding, but hopefullyby improving medical care, by aggressively man-aging blood pressure and other cardiovascularrisk factors in addition to blood sugar control,we can start to turn this around."

End-stage kidney disease occurs when chronickidney disease -- the gradual loss of kidney func-tion -- reaches an advanced state and the kid-neys can no longer filter waste and excess fluidfrom the blood, which should be excreted inurine.

When kidneys lose these capabilities, danger-ous levels of fluid, electrolytes and wastes canbuild up, requiring dialysis or a kidney transplantto stay alive.

    DIABETES AWARENESS INOUR COMMUNITIES

Kidney failure is increasing in Australians agedunder 50 with type 2 diabetes, a study has found.

The study of more than 1.3 million Australianssays it is leading to reduced quality of life andgreater demand on kidney dialysis and trans-plantation services.

The research, led by Melbourne's Baker Heartand Diabetes Institute, calls for urgent attentionto reduce the progression of kidney disease andhighlights the importance of aggressively man-aging risk factors in people with younger-onsettype 2 diabetes.

The study examined trends in end-stage kidneydisease in Australians with diabetes from 2002to 2013.

Researchers said it showed a progressive risein end-stage kidney disease in people with type2 diabetes aged under 50, while remaining sta-ble for those with type 1 diabetes and for type 2diabetes aged 50-80.

This finding, published in the American Journalof Kidney Diseases, was supported by othersimilar studies.

It also found the incidence of end-stage kidneydisease was higher in men than women, thoseliving in the most disadvantaged areas, in indig-enous people and those living in remote areas.
