It is with great pleasure, as St. Joseph's College thcelebrates the 14 anniversary of making a specific

contribution in the field of Education among the youth, I present this special issue of the News Digest. This year we have embarked on the theme “Explore, Enrich, Enhance, and Excel” and all our activities were translated into reality with this perspective. I am exhilarated to convey that with the macro backdrop of Higher Education policy- ‘providing equity, access, availability and quality education’ we have transformed our campus experience to progressively march in the path of autonomy and excellence in Education. It has been a challenging and fulfilling experience. We want to re-affirm the vision and mission of the college as we benchmark the education system in the college: “Providing a distinct environment of excellence in education with humane values and social commitment”.

While we celebrate the grant of AUTONOMY by University Grants Commission(UGC) from the year June 2011, it elaborates still a greater vision for the future of St. Joseph's college, which has remained a mainstay in education. We are proud to state that this is the first of its kind among the classical unaided colleges(self-financed) under the jurisdiction of Osmania University. It was something exciting and rewarding, long awaited by the all stakeholders of the institution after tasting the success of accreditation by National Assessment Accreditation Council (NAAC). The wings of academic freedom under autonomy were strengthened further by the 2(f) and 12(B) issued by UGC.

Autonomy has envisaged the perspectives that we could adapt well to the changing needs and situation by opening new courses like BA Mass Com & Journalism and

BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration). In fact, reaching beyond the confines, we have set up the second campus in the vicinity of the college to enhance the physical infrastructure.

We are constantly reminded of the needs of the human person, the education for freedom, affirmation of cultural values and rights, and employability of the taught to face the competitive world market. It is not just sufficient to have the domain knowledge in the subjects alone, but very much necessary to possess employability skills to enter into the global world of opportunities. The courses are designed to develop the ability of the Josephites to bring the professions and the industry with the right mix of theory and practice. The introduction of semester pattern with an excellent continuous evaluation system encourages creativity, clarity of expression, critical thinking and application. For the Faculty, Autonomy means a huge change in class participation, a feeling of ownership of the courses that they design and the satisfaction of offering the students the best through their teaching learning.

Having spent almost three decades in academic institutions with interest, I have realized that the goal of higher education is not only to promote the pursuit of knowledge, but also to develop the right attitude, best work ethos, professionalism, leadership and social responsibility. That explains the reason for our Alumni proudly calling St. Joseph's as 'a way of life', a cherished dream, not just a College. We look forward to the challenging responsibilities that lie ahead in providing a more holistic and integrated education to our students.

Finally, dear readers, our effort is in your hands. We hope that this publication will help you get some information on how we are marching ahead in making a responsible society that contributes to the development of life.

God bless all of us !

Humane Values

a) Towards Building Self – Esteem

b) Attitude Building

"Listening looks easy, but it's not simple. Every head is a world."

These words of a simple Cuban proverb demonstrate the complexity of our work at the department of Counseling at St. Joseph's College. The aim of our counseling sessions and classes on Value Education is to aid students in developing their self-esteem and self-efficacy. Further, with regular one-on-one sessions, most students are able to either resolve their concerns or gain the self-confidence and clarity to withstand their trials.

Nothing... absolutely nothing... contributes more to your success than your attitude. Positive attitude is that which makes all the difference in success in both your personal and professional lives. In fact, research makes it clear that attitude is more important than any other element when it comes to ensuring success.Lectures on topics like `Bettering Relationships and Avoiding Abuse' were conducted exclusively for the girl students of the college. Our classes on value education are designed to touch upon those areas, which play a major role in developing students' personalities and their outlook on life. Apart from this, the Counseling department conducts weekly Yoga classes for the girl students to help them better their physical as well as mental health. In these classes, they are taught the practices of Asana, Pranayama and Dhyaana (meditation) along with visualizations that are aimed at bringing in clarity and self-confidence into their lives.

Most Rev. Fr. Thumma Bala D.D.,Archbishop of Hyderabad

Diamonds glow because of total internal reflection and His Grace Most Rev. Thumma Bala, likewise,

shines with a total sheen in the service of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Hearty congrats and best wishes to our beloved Chairman on his 25 years of Episcopal ordination. Archbishop Thumma Bala is the Chosen one, the consecrated one and the divine emissary of the Archdiocese of Hyderabad.

Archbishop is known to be a man of prayer and firmly affirms the dictum: of the prayer, by the prayer and for prayer. He merges and mingles with people in stark simplicity and emerges as a victor by serving the ministry of Christ in all ways. He truly lives and epitomizes the motto 'Service in unity and charity' in letter and spirit. The essence of his sermon is to cut ostentatious expenses and the very fact that the fund for poor children has become a reality makes his mission/spirit of service fall in line with the words of Jesus Christ - 'Whatsoever you do to the least of my brethren you do unto me.'

His erudition and scholarship amazes all. He has the paradoxical combination of professionalism and humility. To recount his address in the governing body meeting of St. Joseph's College - He began with expression of gratitude 'Endaro Mahanubhavulu Andariki Na Abhivandanalu' (My Greetings to all the learned and honoured people) and continued with the firm resolve to put the college on a high pedestal which characterizes his great style of leadership. His message at the APBC commission for Education, after a stormy speech of Mr. Raymond Peters, IAS, the Archbishop tactfully summarized in these few words ‘our institutions look beyond academic excellence to character formation’. This displays his deep rooted belief that education is only a subset of the divine endeavor of all those chosen specially by God for His Mission. And this Man of God from the East (Warangal) is perhaps the one to resurrect the One Vision and One Mission of the Catholic Church in the metropolitan city of Hyderabad.

The management, staff, and students of St Joseph's College wish 'Hamaara Archbishop' a long life in the service of the humanity.

A Tribute to our Beloved Chairman Most Rev. Thumma BalaA Tribute to our Beloved Chairman Most Rev. Thumma Bala
