Figuratively Speaking to Premiere at AAH

The popular FIGURATIVELY SPEAKING exhibition will open with a reception and awards ceremony on Friday, January 15, from 5-8pm. Board member Bill Wollyung is the show’s sponsor for 2010. Music at the reception will be provided by Hal and Felicity Fox, who play an eclectic variety of tunes with violin and guitar, including classical, Irving Berlin, and folk music.

Prize juror for Figuratively Speaking this year is Susan Schreckengaust, owner of Arts at 510 in Harrisburg. Prize sponsors include: XPEDX, watercolours; LB Smith Ford, photography; Alan Hostetler Insurance, pastels and drawings; Art Depot, oils and acrylics; Brinjac Engineering, sculpture and ceramics; J. Stephen Feinour and Bernadette Barattini, other media; and The Hilton Harrisburg, best of show.

After the opening reception, the exhibition will continue through February 11 with regular gallery hours of 9:30am to 9pm, Monday through Thursday, 9:30am to 4 Friday, 10-4 Saturday, and 2 to 5pm Sunday.

BRIAN EPPLEY, FIRST PRIZEWINNER IN OILS IN THE 2008 FIGURATIVELY SPEAKING SHOW.

SunNa Jung of South Korea will join Evelyn Burton of Harrisburg, Donna McGee of Bethesda, MD, and Lauren Mulhern of Chadds Ford in an exciting Invitational Exhibition at the Art Association, opening with a reception from 5 to 8pm on Friday, February 19. Jonathan Frazier will be the musician for the reception. The show will continue through March 25.

SunNa Jung holds her BA from Pusan University of Education and her MA from BangSong–TongShin University, both in South Korea. Since 2004, SunNa is the owner of “Sun-Na-Bang” Nature organic dyeing workshop in South Korea, which features artist-discovered nature-dyeing techniques, with colours created from plants and flowers. She has exhibited her painted and dyed silk creations in a variety of galleries in South Korea, New York, and Japan. She is also an international researcher and lecturer.

Donna McGee holds her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Goddard College in Vermont and her Master’s Degree from Penn State University. She has held numerous solo exhibitions of her stunning abstract paintings in Maryland and Washington, DC, and has participated in many group shows. McGee states that she uses a sometimes bold, but generally muted, palette of earth and rust tones; her paintings evoking surfaces marked by the passage of time. Her manipulation of her acrylics create simultaneous illusions of flatness and experience, with colours growing into each other, and planes inscribed with abrasions and fissures.

Lauren Mulhern avers that her watercolour paintings begin as three-dimensional assemblages, built in natural outdoor or confined interior spaces. She constructs still-lifes as stages, using selected objects as props and sets, arranged behind a curtain to emulate a theatrical narrative. Antique objects often are used to enhance the mysterious mood, with cages and boxes symbolizing feelings of entrapment. A playful imagination and deep admiration for performance art influence her concepts, along with the formal execution of her paintings. She holds her BA from Kutztown University.

Evelyn Burton, also a Kutztown graduate, holds her Master’s Degree in Education from Penn State. Currently retired, Burton had been a high school art teacher from 1969 through 2006. Burton’s current photography series captures the bleak and crumbling Eastern State Penitentiary, reflecting stories of horrendous punishment, deprivation, and extreme isolation. Opened in 1829, the prison was based on the Quaker belief that total solitude allows a miscreant to reflect and find redemption, and therefore atonement for wrongdoing. The penitentiary closed in 1970, and at that time the walls and paint were in perfect condition, as evidenced by historic photos. Years of abandonment caused the state of decay visitors experience today, and which Burton has captured on film.

This powerful four-artist exhibition will remain on view at the Art Association of Harrisburg through March 25.

Terry Croteau is a local artist and member of the Art Association. She recently published a personal journal entitled, “Footpath My Ass!” And Other Keen Observations Made by a Middle-Aged Woman Hiking the Appalachian Trail. Her book documents over half a year of her life, as she exists in the elements and journeys along the AT.

Terry is both author and illustrator of the publication and would like to offer, for purchase through the AAH, the paperback edition of her book. When AAH members, their friends and families, and gallery patrons purchase Terry Croteau’s book through AAH, $3 from royalties received by the author, for AAH sales, will be donated to the Art Association of Harrisburg, to benefit their efforts.

Purchase “Footpath My Ass!” from the Art Association and help to support the AAH fundraising efforts. Find a quiet spot and join “Bluebird” (Terry’s trail name) as she walks, crawls, trips, and falls from Georgia to Maine, along a path that is anything but, a footpath. From the very start, her book carries a generous dose of what the Appalachian Trail routinely serves to the unsuspecting or uninitiated hiker. “Bluebird’s account of her 2006 attempted thru-hike not only vividly describes the daily ups and downs in the life of a thru-hiker, but it also provides a wealth of “lessons learned information. (Including valuable life lessons.)

Kelly McGee became our new Administrative Assistant on October 12, taking the place of Brook Lauer, who

is now working at a local architect’s office. Kelly was the AAH intern during the summer of 2007 and has taken classes here since age 5, so she is very familiar with the organization!

Kelly says she enjoys being outdoors and listening to live music, as well as gardening, fishing, and baking. An accomplished oil painter, Kelly’s preferred subjects are the human figure, landscapes, interiors, and self-portraits. The majority of her paintings are done on wood, which is unique. Her work can be viewed at kellymcgeeartist.blogspot.com.
