FROM THE VICAR’S DESK
P-Holy art Thou, O God ; C: Holy art Thou, Almighty Lord; P- Holy art Thou, Immortal Lord; C:O Thou that was crucified for us have mercy on us
(Taken from the Order of Worship for Holy Qurbana) The portion is called Trisagion in Liturgy. This is a very important portion of the Kauma (Prayer of Adoration). The word ‘Trisagion’ (‘thrice holy’) means singing thrice the glory of Christ Jesus. In Mar Thoma Church, Trisagion is adoration and glorification of Jesus Christ. The Liturgy starts with the glorification of Christ Jesus for He is the centrality of Christian faith. Three points we need to understand in relation to the above prayer. 1. We worship God in Christ in the manner angels worship and adore him in Heaven. Our worship is a replicate of the heavenly worship. Glimpses of heavenly worship are found in Biblical portions such as Isaiah 6: 3ff and Revelations 4: 8-11. People on earth join with the angels in Heaven adoring the exalted/enthroned Jesus Christ in His Glory and Majesty. Our liturgy is Biblical in nature and content. It is in and through the liturgy the Church affirms, proclaims and transmits her faith in Jesus Christ. Worship elevates us to the glory of God. We are raised up to God’s glory through worship. Worship brings us closer to God. 2. Realization of God’s true essence makes me understand who am I. Jesus Christ is Holy, Almighty and Immortal God. He is Holy because there is no evil in Him (Heb.4:25; Col.2:9; 2 Cor.5:22). He is Almighty because God is omnipotent, mighty, Alpha and Omega and is also all-sufficient (Jn.8:58; Rev.1:8; Heb.1:8). Jesus Christ is immortal because He has no beginning and no end (Jn.1:1-3; Heb.13:8). The true realization of God’s nature helps us to understand who/what we are. The holiness of God reminds me that I am unholy; the Almightiness of God reveal me that I am lowly and powerless; God being immortal reminds us that we are mortals and everything will perish except God. When we stand before God who is Holy, Almighty and Immortal, we realizes our own unworthiness. Moses (Ex:4), Prophet Isaiah (Isa6:5), Prophet Ezekiel (Exe.1:28), Prophet Jeremiah (Jer1:6) John the Baptist (Lk.3:16), Peter (Lk.5:8), Paul (Act 9; Rom 7:18) are few examples to this.
4
VICAR’S DESK CONT’D…
“O thou who was crucified for us have mercy on us,” is affirmation of Christian faith in Christ who was crucified for us. The whole liturgy is centered around the Christ event. Thief on the cross receives the joy of salvation when he truly believed and prayed to crucified Christ. With confidence we can draw near to the Christ’s throne of grace (Cross) and Christ’s mercy is upon those who pray to Him in truth (Eph.3:12, Heb.4:16). 3. Repetition is re-affirmation and proclamation of faith in Christ and also in Trinity. This adoration prayer is repeated thrice. Those who don’t know the depth of liturgy are often troubled by this repetition. Repetition has its own significance in liturgy and is also meaningful. A close look into the liturgy will make us understand that many important prayers and ideas are often repeated. This reminds us that we have to glorify God constantly and has to appeal for His mercy always. Repeating this prayer thrice also affirms Triune nature of God (God the Father, God the Son and God the Spirit). Three also stands for completeness and perfection according to Christian numerology. Peter denied Jesus thrice before Jesus’ trial and crucifixion. Risen Jesus reinstates Peter to apostleship by asking thrice, “Peter, son of John, do you love me more than these?” Peter affirms thrice his faith in Jesus by saying, “Yes I love you.” When the believing community repeats the Trisagion thrice, we are reaffirming our faith and trust in Jesus Christ who is the true revealer of God the Father and in whom the Spirit of God resides. Dearly Beloved in Christ, as we participate in the Holy Communion let us be mindful of the great depth in the liturgical prayers.
May God keep us in His Warm and comforting Embrace Rev. Shinoi Joseph Vicar

YOUTH CHAPLAIN’S CORNER
Worship
“Some go to church to take a walk. Some go to church to laugh and talk. Some go to church to meet a friend. Some go to church their time
to spend. Some go to church to meet another. Some go to church a fault to cover. Some go to church for speculation. Some go to church
to doze and nod. The wise go there to worship God.” [Author unknown]
Why do we worship God? The word worship means giving worth to
God who is worthy to be worshipped. A few years ago the Chicago Tribune reported the story of a New Mexico woman who was frying tortillas when she noticed that the skillet burns on one of her tortillas resembled the face of Jesus. Excited, she showed it to her husband and neighbors, and they all agreed that there was a face etched on the tortilla and that it truly bore a resemblance to Jesus. So the woman went to her priest to have the tortilla blessed. She testified that the tortilla had changed her life, and her husband agreed that she had been a more peaceful, happy, submissive wife since the tortilla had arrived. The priest, not accustomed to blessing tortillas, was somewhat reluctant but agreed to do it. The woman took the tortilla home, put it in a glass case with piles of cotton to make it look like it was floating on clouds, built a special altar for it, and opened the little shrine to visitors. Within a few months, more than eight thousand people came to the shrine of the Jesus of The Tortilla, and all of them agreed that the face in the burn marks on the tortilla was the face of Jesus (except for one reporter who said he thought it looked like former heavy-weight boxing champion Leon Spinks!) Some people worship God without knowing the worth of God.

YOUTH CHAPLAIN’S CORNER CONT’D…
Four essential experiences should be in a true worship. Our worship should be glorifying God; through worship we are giving glory to God who is the only one who deserves it. Secondly our worship should be purifying us. Through the worship we are purifying ourselves to worship the holy God. Thirdly our worship should be edifying us. Every Sunday we worship God corporately and the aim of corporate worship is to edify us as community of God. And finally our worship should be witnessing to others. Through our worship we are witnessing a living God to others and through that we are presenting the Gospel to others. So our worship never ends on Sundays but we continue to worship our God through our words, actions and attitudes from Monday through Saturday. Let us worship God in truth and spirit in every moment of lives.
May God bless us all.

QUARTER UPDATE
The months of May & June were times of transition for our Parish. We
bid farewell to Rev. A.B. Binu and welcomed Rev. Shinoi Joseph including both of their families. I personally want to thank all of the individuals,
organizations, committee members, and office bearers who played a pivotal role
in the Church Cleanup, Inventory and Parsonage Cleanup in the short period of time we were given. As in the past, it was immediately evident that our Church
still has the ability to pull together in times of need. During this time each
organization stepped forward to introduce Achen to its aims, goals, strengths, and areas for improvement. Let us continue to think positively for 2014 and
work tirelessly to glorify His Kingdom through all our efforts.
