Back to the Bricks Tour From June 8-13 a number of club members took part in the Back to the Bricks Tour. The group left from Davison with overnight stops in Mt. Pleasant, Gaylord, Petoskey, St. Ignace, and East Tawas, culminating with an "End of the Road" Luncheon at the Birch Run Speedway & Event Center. From the looks of these pictures, a good time was had by all!

At the beginning of the tour, club member Leonard Hammermeister received an award from tour founder Al Hatch, for reaching the 55,000 mile mark! Congratulations Leonard!! (Sorry, don’t know why Al is cut off. The thumbnail photo looks fine! Computers!………)

And………….as Cyndi Lauper said, “girls just wanna have fun!”. And here they are, at one of the car shows on the tour. Lookin’ great, ladies!!

The club enjoys the beach in Tawas, below. Vic was actually talking to me in this picture, addressing a question about taillights!

The big finish in Birch Run is below. Check out the eyelashes on Rusty and Rita’s car on the right! Very stylish! All in all, it was a successful run, with few breakdowns. Notable were Marty Knowlton’s (Script As) original fan that threw a blade through the radiator’s upper tank. Replace those stamped/welded original fans with 1-piece aluminum fans, folks! As I was repeatedly told by a certain club member: “These cars were meant to last 3-5 years! Replace that fan!” The other notable one was Bob and Nora Petriches’s clutch pedal arm broke off. A welder was found in Mackinaw City and it was fixed for the next day’s drive!

Gordon Hall Days Antique & Classic Car ShowOn June 26th Bill and Ann Miller planned a tour to Gordon Hall Days in Dexter. Ironically Marty Kapanowski, who lives about 1/2 mile from Gordon Hall, did not plan to attend due to having to

haul a horse to a show that day. As fate would twist things though, someone else hauled his daughter’s horse, and between horse events, Marty headed home to suit up in some approximate period wear and head over in his “A” to join the gang for an hour. But alas, it was not to be!! Upon arrival there were a dozen or

more cars of various vintage present, but no Model As other than a Rat Rod. It turns out the organizers said many owners did not want to bring their cars due to the high risk of rain that day. So, Bill

and Ann, thanks for setting up the tour anyway, but I was the only one there, and I didn’t even sign up! :-) There was an old-timey brass oom-pah band playing on the grand porch of Gordon Hall, a food cart, some antique-sale tents, and a few nice old cars to look at. They also offered tours of the house which was built by Judge Samuel Dexter in the 1840s, underwent some changes of hands, decay, rebuilds, and was part of the underground railroad through Michigan.

Ok, it’s not a Model A, but I have not seen a 1960 Jaguar before, and I thought this car was pretty cool. ————>

:-)) A hip young man goes out and buys a 2001 Ferrari 360 Spider. It is the best convertible sports car, costing about $250,000. He takes it out for a spin and while stopping for a red light, an old man on a moped, wearing an open face crash helmet (looking about 70 years old) pulls up next to him. The old man looks over the sleek, shiny red surface of the car and asks, “What kind of car ya’ got there, sonny?” The young man replies, “A 2001 Ferrari 360 Spider. They cost about a quarter of a million dollars!” “That’s a lot of money,” says the old man, shocked. “Why does it cost so much?” “Because this car can do over 200 miles an hour!” states the cool dude proudly. The moped driver asks, “Can I take a look inside?” “Sure,” replies the owner. So the old man pokes his head in the window and looks around. Leaning back on his moped, the old man says, “That’s a pretty nice car, all right!” Just then the light changes so the guy decides to show the old man what his car can do. He floors it, and within 30 seconds the speedometer reads 220 mph. Suddenly, he notices a dot in his rear view mirror. It seems to be getting closer! He slows down to see what it could be and suddenly, whhhoooossshhh! Something whips by him, going much faster! “What on earth could be going faster than my Ferrari?!” the young man asks himself. Then, ahead of him, he sees a dot coming toward him. Whoooooosh! It goes by again, heading the opposite direction! And it almost looked like the old man on the moped! “Couldn’t be,” thinks the guy. “How could a moped outrun a Ferrari?!” Again, he sees a dot in his rear view mirror! Whooooosh Ka-BbblaMMM! The moped plows into the back of his car, demolishing the rear end. The young man jumps out, and it IS the old man!!! Of course, the moped and the old man are hurting for certain. He runs up to the old man and says, “You gotta tell me how you got that thing to be faster than my Ferrari !” The old man looks up and replies, “OK..., but first, unhook my suspenders from your side-view mirror, will ya?”

Editor’s Corner Happy 4th of July!

As we prepare to celebrate our Nation’s independence, I am reminded of the independent spirits that Model A-ers are. Most of us work on our own cars. They have no warranties, and we can’t turn them in after the 2-year lease is up and they start to need some maintenance. We are on our own. If we are on a trip and the cars break, we change points, condensers, distributors and caps, coils, generators, starters, cam gears, radiators, water pumps, tires, wheels, brakes, lights, and just about anything else that doesn’t need an engine hoist; all on the side of the road if needed!

Mr. Ford grew up on a farm and once said (approximately) “Farming is far too much work, given the result”. He wanted to give the country independence of mobility to move people and goods freely around the country instead of being tied to one day’s horse ride to move your goods to market. He also provided many people independence from rural life if they so chose, by offering $5 a day to assemble cars, thus exponentially growing the middle class and the economic and industrial engine of the country. And it was that engine that provided the means to preserve our country’s freedom and independence in World Wars I and II.

So, this 4th of July, thank a veteran, and thank the inventor of our beloved Model As (and Ts) for helping to preserve the independence that our forefathers claimed for us so very long ago.
