` Newsletter 12/2017 11 May 2017 Dear Parents, Guardians and Learners In a world that has become obsessed with the pursuit of scientific knowledge and the invention of new technologies, it is easy to lose sight of the value of the humanities and the arts in society but not at Rand Park. We are so fortunate to have a very dynamic and vibrant cultural programme that caters for the varied artistic talents of our learners and I am in constant awe of their achievements. Virtually every day, including weekends and holidays, in some hidden corner of the school, there is some cultural activity taking place: Major Production rehearsals, Debating practice, Band practice, Public Speaking Club, Play Festival rehearsals the list is long and varied. Often the long hours and hard work put into cultural activities go unnoticed and the skills that are developed are under-appreciated in a sports- mad, technologically-driven society but where else are learners given the opportunity to dream and imagine and create; to entertain and enthral; to convince and persuade? The arts, in fact, drive society in many unseen and unacknowledged ways if it were not for the imaginations of fantasy writers, for example, who would have even thought of inventing some of the gadgets we now take for granted. If it were not for the stories we immerse ourselves in, our emotional wellbeing would be less developed as stories help us make sense of the world around us. If it were not for activities like Debating and Public Speaking, where would learners develop the skills of logic, critical thinking and clarity of thought? The arts by way of the school’s cultural programme – encourage the acquisition of all of these skills and more. To all our learners and teachers who give their time, energy and talent to cultural activities at Rand Park, I say an enormous thank you. The school owes you a debt of gratitude for the wonderful ambassadors you are for the school. This year has been a particularly fruitful year and the best is yet to come in the form of our annual Major Production, where our learners get to showcase their extraordinary talents. Good luck to all our performers and those behind the scenes who ensure the smooth running of the show, and congratulations to all who have achieved success culturally this year. Yours sincerely T WORKMAN-DAVIES (MISS) DEPUTY PRINCIPAL & DEAN OF CULTURE Don’t miss out! Newsletter 12/2017 11 May 2017 Dear Parents, Guardians and Learners In a world that has become obsessed with the pursuit of scientific knowledge and the invention of new technologies, it is easy to lose sight of the value of the humanities and the arts in society – but not at Rand Park. We are so fortunate to have a very dynamic and vibrant cultural programme that caters for the varied artistic talents of our learners and I am in constant awe of their achievements.

Virtually every day, including weekends and holidays, in some hidden corner of the school, there is some cultural activity taking place: Major Production rehearsals, Debating practice, Band practice, Public Speaking Club, Play Festival rehearsals – the list is long and varied. Often the long hours and hard work put into cultural activities go unnoticed and the skills that are developed are under-appreciated in a sports-mad, technologically-driven society but where else are learners given the opportunity to dream and imagine and create; to entertain and enthral; to convince and persuade?

The arts, in fact, drive society in many unseen and unacknowledged ways – if it were not for the imaginations of fantasy writers, for example, who would have even thought of inventing some of the gadgets we now take for granted. If it were not for the stories we immerse ourselves in, our emotional wellbeing would be less developed as stories help us make sense of the world around us. If it were not for activities like Debating and Public Speaking, where

would learners develop the skills of logic, critical thinking and clarity of thought? The arts – by way of the school’s cultural programme – encourage the acquisition of all of these skills and more.

To all our learners – and teachers – who give their time, energy and talent to cultural activities at Rand Park, I say an enormous thank you. The school owes you a debt of gratitude for the wonderful ambassadors you are for the school.

RPHS learners

A very special acknowledgement of those parents and supporters who have offered to assist us with a contribution towards the School’s Feeding Scheme for children at risk.

We do, however, still require support to complement our existing budget and call on our families to assist us wherever possible.

Any amount – large or small – will be very welcome.

If you are willing to donate, please contact Heather Robinson ([email protected]) for details.

Results: SACEE Debating Tournament

Our Junior SACEE Debating team participated in a Debating Tournament held on Saturday, 6 May at Brescia House. The team consisted of the following learners:

- Hannah Nash (Grade 9) - Bianca Liebenberg (Grade 9) - Zoë Chishimba (Grade 9) - Georgina Furter (Grade 9) - Olivia Davies (Grade 8)

Rand Park won two of the three debates:

Debate 1: Against Roosevelt High debating the motion: "This House believes that high schools should focus on literature written by local authors". Olivia Davies was named Best Speaker of this debate. Rand Park won.

Debate 2: Against Hyde Park debating the motion: "This House supports the legalisation of recreational marijuana". Olivia took the honours once again as Best Speaker. Rand Park won.

Debate 3: Against HeronBridge debating the motion: "This House believes that South Africa should employ the 'Shoot to kill' policy". Rand Park lost.

We are extremely proud of our Junior Debating team as they have been invited to participate in the Debating Championships, which will be held on 20 and 27 May.

Congratulations!
