This new company, called Penske- Jasper Engines, will be located in a new 28,000 square foot facility in Concord, North Carolina. The alliance will supply engines for the #77, #2, #12 and #02 Winston Cup teams. Jasper Engines President Doug Bawel is excited about the partner- ship. “Roger and I have been friends for many years and we at JASPER have admired what he has made happen. By combining forces, all of us will benefit. With Don Miller as Operations Manager and Larry Wallace as General Manager the best is yet to come.” Penske Engines owner Roger Penske says the alliance allows all four teams to improve. “JASPER is the leader in remanufacturing, and with their contacts to automotive suppliers and experience, it just makes sense. Our new facility will truly be state of the art. We are giving Larry and his entire crew what they need to keep improving.” Jasper Motorsports driver Robert Pressley is coming off his best Winston Cup season ever. Pressley and the #77 Jasper Engines & Transmissions Ford Taurus finished 25th in the final point standings, an improvement of 14 positions from the 1999 sea- son. In 34 points-paying races in 2000, the Jasper Motorsports team averaged a 23.7 on the starting grid, and earned a first-round qualifying spot 19 times. Their best starting position was 3rd at Phoenix on November 5th. At the finish line, Pressley aver- aged a 24.6 for the year. The team had one top-five, seven top-15 and 13 top-20 finishes. Their best fin- ish was 5th at Michigan on June 11th. Myers GarageMyers Garage in Lizton, Indiana,

has been a family owned and operat-ed business since 1952. They takecare of automotive and light truckrepair, including engines, brakes andcomputer diagnosis.

Owner Dick Myers has been anautomotive technician since 1962.During that time, Myers was an autotechnician in the Army between1964 and 1967. Myers later workedat an Oldsmobile dealership inDanville, Indiana, from 1972 to1977. He was promoted to ServiceManager in 1975.

Dick took over the family garagefrom his father, who started thebusiness in nearby Brownsburg in1952. The garage was moved toLizton in 1978. And after setting upshop in two different buildings, thebusiness moved to its present loca-tion at 522 West Second Street in1990.

Myers Garage currently has eightemployees, including one ASECertified Technician, and threeMaster ASE Technicians. To keepup with the latest automotiveadvancements, Myers’ seven servicebays utilize the latest in computerdiagnostic equipment, including theNew Generation Star Tester, theTech 2 Diagnostic System, and OTCDiagnostic equipment. This allowsMyers to service domestic and mostimport vehicles.

Myers has used JASPER remanu-factured products for the past 12

years. He uses approximately 50 gas

engines and transmissions a year.Myers says his garage had used sev-eral other engine brands in the past,but wasn’t happy with their qualityor workmanship. That’s why he usesJASPER Quality RemanufacturedProducts, because he found JASPERto have the best quality and avail-ability. “They (JASPER) make areally good product,” says Myers.“And they are good people to workwith too.”

Myers sells the JASPER namewhile he makes the sale, and he saysthe customer is very familiar withthe JASPER name. “It’s the warran-ty that wins them over,” says Myers.

The business philosophy of MyersGarage is, “Do it right the first time”and “Treat the customer the way youwould want to be treated.” That’s agood philosophy to follow. Nowthat third-generation technicianMike Myers is handling more of theday-to-day business, Myers Garageis ensured of continuing a fine levelof service for many years to come.

With the growth of electronics intransmission repair, checking elec-trical components has become ascommon as checking the fluidlevel. Relays have become morewidely used in the automotiveindustry during the past severalyears, particularly with the control-ling of electrical circuits related tothe automatic transmission. Relaysare normally open switches that areclosed when energized.

Their purpose is to isolate onepart of an electrical circuit fromanother. Once the operation of therelay is understood, any relay canbe checked with ease.

Figure 1 is a wiring diagram of a

typical relay. Each terminal is let-tered for identification. TerminalA energizes the relay either fromthe ignition switch or from a con-trol module. Terminal B is a fuseddirect battery feed terminal.Terminal C is a ground circuitgoing to either a direct ground, ora control module. Terminal D isthe intended circuit that the directbattery feed terminal (Terminal B)will supply when the switch isclosed. When Terminal C isgrounded and voltage is suppliedto Terminal A, the relay becomesenergized, pulling two contactstogether and joining terminals Band D.

To check the relay for properoperation, supply 12 volts toTerminal A, ground Terminal Cand check for continuity acrossterminals B and D with a digitalvolt-ohm meter (Figure2). If ter-minal identification is uncertain,simply unplug the relay from theconnector. Place the negative leadof the DVOM to ground with themeter set to DC volts. With thepositive lead, carefully check eachterminal in the connector with theignition OFF.

The terminal in the connector thatsupplies battery voltage would beTerminal B. The terminal ofTerminal B is Terminal D (SeeFigure 1).

Now turn the ignition ON.Recheck the remaining two identi-fied terminals (See Figure 3). Theone that has voltage with the igni-tion ON is Terminal A. Theremaining terminal is the groundterminal (C).

With the terminals identified inthe connector, the relay terminalscan can be identified and ready fortesting (See Figure 4). Run twojumper wires from the battery.Place the positive battery-postjumper wire to Terminal A. Havethe negative battery-post jumperlead prepared to ground Terminal C.With the DVOM set to ohms, placethe lead across terminals B and D.When Terminal C is grounded, aclick should be heard and the conti-nuity should be displayed on themeter. When Terminal C is notgrounded, the switch should beopen, and the meter should displaythe same. If the relay does not openand close as described, replace therelay.

JASPER & Federal-Mogul Announce Strategic Partnership

Federal-Mogul Corporation hasbeen named official supplier ofreplacement engine bearings, pis-tons, gaskets, piston rings and com-plete “loaded-piston” assemblies toJasper Engines & Transmissions,the nation’s leading engine remanu-facturer.

The strategic partnership includesboth a supply agreement and a mar-keting element, and is the first ofits kind between a major aftermar-ket supplier and engine remanufac-turer.

Terms of the agreement call forthe company’s Sealed Power pis-tons, piston rings, engine bearings,and Fel-Pro gaskets to be installedin engines remanufactured byJASPER. In addition, JASPER willbecome the f irst aftermarket cus-tomer worldwide to utilize Federal-Mogul’s signature engine systemsmanufacturing capabilities;JASPER will purchase complete,ready to install Sealed Power pistonand ring assemblies for its automo-tive and diesel engines, eliminatingthe need to source, stock, andassemble pistons and rings prior toengine production.
