In the 1850s, the home was purchased by Dr. Humphrey Harwood Curtis, William Harwood’s great-grandson. Dr. Curtis had his medical practice at Endview from 1856 to 1861. The home was used briefl y as a Confed-erate hospital in the spring of 1862 and was then occupied by Union forces until the end of the war.

James A. Fields House James A. Fields (1844–1903) was a teacher, lawyer and member of the Virginia House of Delegates. The house was used by Mr. Fields as his law offi ce and primary residence from 1897 to 1903. In 1908, it housed the fi rst Newport News hospital for blacks. Today, this restored home gives visitors a glimpse into the life of the African-American community in Newport News during the 1900s.

Peninsula Community Theatre In the early 1950s, the Newport News Little Theatre and the Hampton Little Theatre merged to form what is now the Peninsula Community Theatre (PCT). In 1994, PCT purchased the Village Theater, an art deco movie house located in historic Hilton Village (where author William Styron worked as a lad). In just 61 days, the movie theater was converted into a setting for live stage productions. Each year, PCT offers musicals, comedies and mysteries as main stage and children’s productions. The main goal of PCT is to provide a venue for local talent to perform in as professional a setting as possible.

THIS IS HAMPTON Hampton is an extraordinary city in the heart of Coastal Virginia. e

400-year old settlement is multi-faceted; rich in Civil War history, African American heritage, water recreation, and abundant shopping and dining opportunities. It is an appealing destination that prompts leisure visitors to return for major industry conventions.

e cultural landscape of the nation’s oldest, continuous, English-speaking settlement in North America is dotted with historic attractions that interpret Hampton’s role in pivotal American decisions and milestones. On November 1, 2011 President Obama named Fort Monroe a National Historic Monument. Visitors are encouraged to come to the nation’s largest stone fort ever built, cross the moat and see the sites within rsthand. Climb Fort Monroe’s walls and be amazed at the awesome position Fort Monroe has held overlooking the Hampton Roads harbor throughout its history and learn about it personally at e Casemate Museum. Or perhaps you’d like to see Fort Monroe and Fort Wool from the water aboard the Miss Hampton II. e legacy doesn’t stop there: Hampton University’s historic campus leaves one amazed at the timeless signi cance of the institution founded in 1868.

e Hampton History Museum located in Downtown Hampton provides a glimpse the major moments in Hampton history that helped shape our great nation. From the Native American gallery depicting the lifestyle of the Virginia Indians living at Kecoughtan prior to the rst settlers’ arrival, to the colonial and Antebellum galleries, you will experience Hampton during a simpler time. e life-like charred ruins re ecting the burning of Hampton in 1861 in the Civil War gallery illuminate the reconstruction of Hampton and how greatly the seafood industry must have impacted Hampton’s post-war economy. e founding of NACA, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, in 1917 in Hampton was the precursor of NASA and the founding site of the American space program.

Continue your explorations at the Virginia Air & Space Center and Riverside Digital 3D IMAX eater, the result of Hampton’s relationship with NASA. More than 100 ight simulators and hands-on exhibits allow you

JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT, YORKTOWN VICTORY CENTERLiving-History Museums Chronicle Nation’s Beginnings

A hands-on history experience awaits visitors at two Williamsburg area museums that explore the nation’s beginnings. At Jamestown Settlement, gallery exhibits chronicle 1600s Virginia in the context of its Powhatan Indian, English and African cultures, complementing historical interpretation at outdoor re-creations of a Powhatan Indian village, the three ships that brought America’s rst permanent English colonists in 1607, and the colonial fort. e story of the American Revolution, from the beginnings of colonial unrest to the formation of the new nation, unfolds at the Yorktown Victory Center through gallery exhibits and outdoor re-creations of a Continental Army encampment and 1780s farm. e museums are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Christmas and New Year’s days. For more information call (888) 593-4682 or visit www.historyisfun.org.

THE MARINERS’ MUSEUM e Mariners’ Museum, America’s National Maritime Museum, is one of

the largest and most comprehensive maritime history museums in the world. For more than 75 years, e Mariners’ has illustrated the spirit of seafaring adventure, assembling a renowned and strikingly diverse collection of 35,000 maritime artifacts, including gureheads, ship models, decorative arts, historic paintings and small craft from around the world.

e remains of one of the most famous ships in history, the Civil War ironclad USS Monitor, have a permanent home in e Mariners’ Museum’s USS Monitor Center. e Wall Street Journal calls the $30 million, 63,500-square-foot facility “An Ironclad Must-See.” Be a part of the action in the high-de nition battle theater, walk on the full-scale Monitor replica, see artifacts like the iconic revolving gun turret, experience interactive exhibits and hands-on conservation.

e Museum sits on a 550-acre park, the nation’s largest privately maintained park that is free and open to the public. Rolling woodlands, a 167-acre Lake Maury, and ve-mile Noland Trail make this a true urban oasis. e Mariners’ Museum is an o cial site on the Virginia Birding and Wildlife Trail, and visitors can take advantage of our interactive backpack program to learn about topics ranging from the history of the park, its plants, and animals, to environmental concerns.

During the Civil War, the woods and waters of Newport News echoed with the thunder of cannons, the crack of rifl e fi re, the shout of orders along with the cries of the wounded and the

dying. One hundred fi fty years later, Newport News is commemorating the Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War with themed events throughout the year. Highlights of the observance include:

• The Civil War 150th Lecture Series at The Mariners’ Museum. Includes “Launching a Ship, Launching a Sanctuary” on Jan. 28; “African-American Sailors on the USS Monitor” on Feb. 18; “The Battle of Drewry’s Bluff” on May 19; “The Monitor and the Appomattox Raid” on June 23; “Heat, Mosquitoes, and a Gouty Captain: The Ironclad Life on the James” on Aug. 11; and “The Monitor at the Washington Navy Yard” on Oct. 20. www.marinersmuseum.org.

• 10th Annual Battle of Hampton Roads Weekend at The Mariners’ Museum, to be held March 9-11. March 2012 marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Hampton Roads. On March 8, 1862, the CSS Virginia destroyed the USS Cumberland and the USS Congress in a battle that showed the supremacy of iron over wood. The following day, the Union ironclad Monitor met the CSS Virginia in a battle that – though fought to a draw – changed the very nature of naval warfare worldwide.

The weekend will feature living history encampments and demonstrations, 19th century music and games, amateur radio station W4M, plus more! www.marinersmuseum.org.

• Civil War van tours departing from Lee Hall Mansion. Includes “Defending the

Southside” on March 17; “In the Steps of Robert Sneden” on April

7; “Battle of Williamsburg” on May 19; “The Seven Days Battles” on June 16; and “Stuart’s Ride Around McClellan” on July 21. www.leehall.org.

• The 150th Anniversary Commemoration of the

Peninsula Campaign at Endview Plantation, to be

held April 14-15 and April 21-22. See the sights and hear

the sounds of a Civil War battle as hundreds of re-enactors converge

on Endview to recreate battles fought 150 years ago during the Peninsula Campaign. Enjoy talks, demonstrations, battles and camp life. www.endview.org.

• Children’s Civil War Camps at Endview Plantation, to be held June 25-28 and July 23-26. Kids 8 to 13 learn about America’s rich military heritage, teamwork and leadership skills. Experiences include camp life, drills, battles and basic soldier’s equipment. www.endview.org.

DAY ONEAM Meet creatures from the sea at the Virginia Living Museum where you can touch a sea star or a horseshoe crab and watch ocean-going fi sh and turtles in their 30,000-gallon aquarium. Take a walk “through” a waterfall and an “underground” cave. Experience a cool Appalachian cove and a steamy Cypress swamp. Stroll the elevated boardwalk and see red wolves, river otters, bald eagles, deer, birds and more, all in a natural wooded setting. Take time to explore the gift shop with dozens of nature-themed gifts. Take a lunch break at the Wild Side Café before heading over to the Peninsula SPCA Exotic Sanctuary & Petting Zoo. The kids will love the opportunity to pet the deer and goats and to meet some exotic animals.PM Take a hands-on approach to the arts at the Peninsula Fine Arts Center. The interactive Hands On For Kids gallery has plenty of fun activities. Children can paint, draw and create till their hearts’ content, and parents don’t have to worry about the mess! Paints, brushes, paper and smocks are provided. Don’t leave until you’ve checked out the gift shop, where you’ll fi nd plenty of child-friendly gifts. Finally, enjoy some afternoon recreation at Riverview Farm Park. The kids will enjoy all the climbing, sliding, swinging and hiding fun at Fantasy Farm, our 30,000-square-foot wooden playground. Then it’s time to enjoy a fun family dinner and a movie before returning to your Newport News hotel.

DAY TWOAM Begin your day at the Virginia Air and Space Center in nearby Hampton. More than 30 historic aircraft can be seen, in addition to interactive exhibits and a hands-on space gallery. Visitors can launch a rocket, pilot a space shuttle and climb aboard a World War II bomber. See the Apollo 12 command module that went to the moon and a three-billion-year-old moon rock. Finish your visit with an IMAX movie or a spin on a 1920s carousel.PM After lunch at one of the many restaurants in downtown Hampton, head back to Newport News and the Virginia War Museum. Their “World Turned Upside Down” exhibit features artifacts from the fall of the Berlin Wall, including a 10’ x 10’ section of the Wall. On display are uniforms from 1775 to the present, paintings, vehicles, swords and personal items such as photographs, playing cards, ration kits and letters. Don’t miss the museum’s outstanding international poster collection or the toy soldiers in the gift shop. After the sun goes down, enjoy ice skating, miniature golf, roller skating or bowling. You’ll fi nd all these activities just minutes from your Newport News hotel.

DAY THREEAM Today’s the day for some outdoor fun and Newport News Park is the place. Try your hand at geocaching and hunt for the more than 50 caches found throughout the park. Rent a bike and take a pleasant ride through our beautiful woodlands or hike one of our nature trails. Rent a rowboat, canoe or paddleboat and enjoy the

serenity of Lee Hall Reservoir. Take a walk around the Japanese Peace Garden and see the ceremonial teahouse, a replica of a 16th-century structure. Play a round or two of disc golf and check out the many nature exhibits at the Discovery Center. There are plenty of playgrounds and a wide range of free nature programs are offered throughout the year. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy one of our many picnic areas, or have lunch at the Legends Grille, overlooking the beautiful Newport News Golf Club at Deer Run.PM After a full day of fun in the sun, return to your hotel in Newport News and treat yourself to room service and some family games.
