Declaration of Independence

Thousands Rally at Sant Jaume Square in Support of a Declaration of

Independence

More than 3,000 people gathered last 11th May in Barcelonas Sant Jaume Square toclaim a Unilateral Declaration of Independence, called by the Independence 2013Collective and the support of SI.

'Urgent need for Independence', says the collectives manifesto, which explains that thesuspension of the Declaration of Sovereignty confirms they are right and it is a clearevidence that once again the Spanish Government will block any step forward taken byCatalonia.

'The sovereignty process cannot be further delayed and each passing day goes againstus', stressed the spokesperson for the collective, Adam Berruezo.

The spokespersons for Escola en Catal (School in Catalan Association), Miquel Casalsand Montse Niub, criticized the imposition of the Spanish language at schools inCatalonia with Werts law and said that Escola en Catal have already collected morethan 163,000 signatures in favour of Catalan at schools.Uriel Bertran, Secretary-General of SI, made a strong commitment to the unilateral

declaration of independence.Speeches were also delivered by members from the various associations that are a part ofIndependence 2013 Collective.

Declaration of Independence'

'They only declaration they cannot suspend is the Declaration of Independence becauseit is part of international law', said Uriel Bertran, Secretary-General of SolidaritatCatalana per la Independncia. For Bertran, this has been the first demonstration thatwill clearly claim the unilateral declaration of independence. And the current situation,with the suspension of the sovereignty declaration, 'shows that the longer it goes it ismost clearly seen that Spain is an antidemocratic country. The Constitutional Court hassuspended the Declaration of Sovereignty and it will also suspend the consultation aswell as anything we want to do within Spain. We must promote the only Declaration theConstitutional Court cannot suspend: the Declaration of Independence by our

Parliament. Then, as a State, we will be able to call a referendum on its ratificationorganized by the Catalan institutions. Uriel Bertran explained the precedent of Kosovosunilateral declaration of independence, the favourable judgement of the InternationalCourt of Justice in The Hague and its immediate international recognition.

Urgent need for Independence.

Catalonia is on the edge. The financial exhaustion we are subject to by the Spanish Government,

through fiscal looting, overdue debts and the crisis mismanagement, brings with it the economiccollapse of our country: 885,000 unemployed and thousands of self-employed businesses and

companies close down. Hospitals, pharmacies, social services third sector, civil servants andcompanies cannot collect what the Generalitat owes them, which is on the verge of economicbankruptcy. More social cuts are expected in sectors such as health, education or publicbroadcasting, which is an assault on our dignity and on the heart and soul of our sense ofnationhood.

Time is not on our side. Quite the opposite, it runs counter to us. The longer it takes since thatshow of force that the demonstration for independence of last 11 th September 2012 meant, themore time we give the Spanish State to organize itself to impede the independence process. InCatalonia, we shall certainly make things right, in an organized manner, following every stageso as to show to the world that we deserve our freedom, but we must make them right nowbecause time is on Spains side, who is resolutely determined to suffocate and attack us, ourculture, our welfare state, education and institutions; anything to weaken us and to render usunable to move forward. In short, a dirty war with all the tools of a state. We must speed up allthe stages and complete them in the coming months.

More than six months have passed since the big demonstration of 11th

September. Becauseof doubts and pressures as to come back to the impossible deal with Spain, it is absolutelyessential that we take action to force the Catalan Parliament and the Government of Cataloniaeither to call a referendum on independence or to make a unilateral declaration of independence,as soon as possible, this year 2013. Soon the country will be in a much weaker situation.

In this crucial moment for Catalonia, the people must set the tone. Only the people can savethe people, and politicians have to adapt to us and meet our demand. We the people are

determined to express ourselves in the streets, over and over again, until the will of the people isserved.

It is time to keep the flame of 11 th September alight and to keep up the pressure, full pressure.We must make another big mobilization where we all Catalans get together, without blames orpartisanship. We can speed up our freedom, we must do it and maybe we can turn thehuman chain planned for next 11

thSeptember into an event celebrating our freedom.

Spain will try to bring disunity among us but we must bear in mind that this is their assault, notours; we must go hand-in-hand by supporting any action for independence.

Francesc Maci said that good sense unless it is backed up with a strong willingness to fight,only serves as a cover for cowardice. Now good sense tells us independence now; not to achieveindependence this year means a great risk to our country and we cannot afford that any more.

For all these reasons, several pro-independence platforms and organizations have joinedtogether and coordinated to organize a new and, lets hope, big mobilization for next 11th May2013. Take part in it, our country and our people deserve it. Long Live Free Catalonia!
