The Newlands Coal mine is located 33 km north-west of the township of Glenden in the northern part of Queensland’s Bowen Basin, 190 kilometres by road west of Mackay.

Coal from Newlands is transported 171 km by rail to the port of Abbot Point for shipment to overseas customers.

OwnershipNewlands Coal is managed by Glencore on behalf of a joint venture partnership between Glencore Coal Queensland (55%), Itochu Coal Resources (35%) and Sumitomo (10%).

Our History

Development at Newlands began with the mine being officially opened in December.

Open cut mining was then extended to Eastern Creek (1995), Suttor Creek (2004) and Wollombi (2006).

Highwall mining operations commenced at Suttor Creek.

Coal mining operations commenced in October in the Newlands Main Deposit as an open cut mine.

Underground mining began in 1998 with the opening of the Southern Underground. This was then replaced by the Northern Underground.

Underground operations will cease.

Environmental Management

• Original land use in the area is predominatelycattle grazing on native and improvedpastures.

• A single Environmental Authority covers allenvironmental management activities for theentire site.

• A Plan of Operations is submitted on anannual basis which covers the details relatingto each mining area and in accordance withthe Environmental Protection Legislation.

Operation

Newlands Coal operates an open cut and underground mine with associated coal handling and processing infrastructure. A new DMC coal processing plant was built in 2006 to coincide with the opening of the Wollombi pit. Coal is mined from a number of seams in the Rangal and Moranbah coal measures.
