Bob Fitzgerald gave us some insights and his thoughts about the time spent among the many

media sports he has covered.

Bob Speaks OutOur Fall ‘08 speaker, Bob Fitzgerald, came to us

from KNBR-AM in San Francisco where he co-hosts the mid-day time slot. After a brief background sketch on the media and sports, he turned to handling, as he does most weekdays, questions and comments from lis-teners - in this case – the usual rapt OTA audience.

Most had to do with the disappointing performance of the local professional baseball and football teams. And most of his replies were those of a dedicated fellow sports fan. Being a fan would seem to be a requirement anyhow of a sports talk radio host, and there was little doubt of Mr. Fitzgerald’s interest in and dedication to his subject. Attendance was perfect as the Lakeside din-

ing room was filled to capacity; and the dinner, super-vised by Olympic Country Club head chef Mike Burns, was memorable for its presentation and imagination.

The website www.otanc.orgNetwork Sportscaster

By Ray WilsonBarry Tompkins, our April dinner

guest and speaker, was there at the beginning – the beginning, that is – of a behemoth big-time sports media industry. Barry was there doing nightly TV sportscasts before UHF or satellite or cable TV, before the most explosive episode in the expansion of franchises in pro football, baseball, basketball, and hockey; and before weekly televised golf tournaments, and before the spread of championships of all kinds in many other sports.

He was there before the appearance of the “clicker,” or TV remote control. The clicker made a huge difference in the way sports were televised. Just compare a play-by-play broadcast from the sixties or seventies with one from today.

When Barry first went on the air sports broadcasts were generally confined to AM radio and VHF network TV channels (when we all had an antenna on the roof), and the daily newspaper sports section (the latter retaining now only a fragment of its former influence owing to TV and the Internet).

It was 1965 when Barry, a local boy - Lincoln High School - went to work for San Francisco radio station KCBS-AM, writing commentaries and producing college football broadcasts. One year later he was hired by CBS television affiliate, KPIX-TV, serving as sports director.

This too was the golden era of future hall of fame broadcasters Lon Simmons, Russ Hodges, Bill King

and such well-remembered local talent as Don Kline and Bob Fouts. Barry says, in fact, that he owes his career to Don Kline at KCBS who let him do interviews and prepare spotter boards (charts of players and their numbers and stats on 11” x 18” boards) for Stanford games. Bob Fouts and Bill King were mentors too, Barry says, and Lon Simmons “practically adopted me.”

In 1974 he left San Francisco for the Big Apple and media capitol of America, joining WNBC-TV as a sports anchor and feature reporter. A year later he crossed the hallway, so to speak, at Rockefeller Center joining NBC-TV sports, undertaking a variety of assignments including doing play-by-play for basketball and football.

Returning to San Francisco in 1978, he took over the sports director’s desk at KRON-TV. Two years later, in another hectic career

move typical of the media world, he took a chance on the newly emergent cable scene, climbing on board HBO to host and do round-by-round coverage of their World Championship Boxing series. True to his roots, he remained a generalist in an age of specialists, covering Wimbledon tennis, figure skating, gymnastics, and any other sport HBO executives thought worth broadcasting.

Moving on to ESPN in 1988 he continued with boxing doing ESPN’s Top Rank series, adding billiards and poker to his by-now extensive resumé.

Since 1995 he has been with Fox Sports Network, doing Sunday Night Fights and serving as the network’s all-around man, dropping in wherever he’s needed. Woody Allen once said (or is alleged to have said) that “95% of success is showing up.” For more than forty years Barry has had a bag packed and always made a point of showing up on time, ready to go – whether it’s billiards or boxing, or basketball – or now, mixed martial arts fighting!

Our speaker has been the recipient of many awards – several Emmys, six CableACE awards, and is a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame. He knew and knows practically everyone in the broadcast sports scene and has collected along the way a vast fund of funny stories and insights into personalities as distinct as Mike Tyson and Billie Jean King.

It is a privilege to welcome to the OTA this long-time witness to the rapidly changing world of broadcast sports.
