The Oral Health Convention Planning Committee:

As a Committee we look forward to each year building a better Convention. We hear the members as they outline the types of CEC they require and work to accommodate such demands. This year we offer courses in: Implant Dentistry, Pathology, Pediatric, Infection Control, Restorative Dentistry, and Eating Disorders. The Convention provides for an opportunity to earn up to 24 points per year.

As our numbers have increased the demand for the CE offered has also grown. Therefore to stay within the Fire Marshall’s rules there is a maximum capacity for some courses, so please register early. The cut-off date is May 23rd, 2016. There will be a late administration fee of $25.00 applied to all registrations received after May 23rd, 2016.

The trade show floor has expanded significantly over the years. However, there are still areas that we would like to cover that are not currently on the floor. If there are exhibitors that you would like to see attending our OHC, please let us know and we will work to bring them in.

Managing Dental Disease and Preserving Tooth Structure in All Ages of Our PopulationSaturday, June 11th — 1:00 PM — 4:00 PM 3 CEC points — Category I

Description of CourseThe practice of dentistry is being significantly impacted by the growing older adult population within the United States. Oral health professionals will increasingly need to more effectively assess and diagnose oral problems, as well as skillfully provide a diverse and frequently complex range of preventive and restorative services to geriatric patients. Understanding the important aspects of the actual delivery of dental services and maintenance of care of geriatric patients is essential to preparing future dentists to meet the oral health challenges facing our “graying” population.

Normal Aging of the Oral Complex focuses on normal aging patterns of the oral complex, the results of these changes, and the ability to distinguish between normal aging and pathology. Along with an increase in the population of older adults, there has been an increase in those seeking to preserve and maintain their oral and dental health. A number of predictable changes in the oral complex must be understood when providing the older adult with comprehensive dental care. The oral health care professional of today and tomorrow will treat an ever-increasing number of older adult patients who differ from older cohorts of the past. The new elderly have more of their own teeth, visit the dentist more often, and demand more sophisticated care.

This seminar will address the diagnostic tests and give you tools to manage your patients through the aging process. This will help them preserve their tooth structure and maintain optimum oral health.

Learning objectives:• Recognize early factors in the disease process• Understand the role of saliva pH• Learn how to choose the appropriate dental products and materials to

preserve tooth structure• Understand how on glass ionomer fits into your dental practice• Learn what “Minimally Invasive” is and how to market your practice

The Silent Killer: Understanding and Addressing the Inflammatory PathwaySaturday, June 11th — 9:00 AM — 12:00 PM 3 CEC points — Category IDescription of CourseAre we still treating periodontal disease as an infection when leading authorities have redefined periodontitis as an inflammatory disease? The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) redefined periodontal disease from an infectious disease to an inflammatory disease in 2008. We are missing a critical piece that is the foundation and benchmark of innovative healthcare delivery if we only treat the bacterial component of the disease. This is supported by the 2015 JADA Guidelines for the treatment of chronic periodontal disease. Today the AAP refers to periodontitis as an inflammatory disease with far reaching destructive effects on systemic health. Long running, ongoing chronic disease such as periodontal disease tips the body’s balance towards chronic inflammation.

Inflammation often being referred to as the ‘silent killer’ is one of the hottest topics of research. The latest research surrounding the oral systemic link is both startling and compelling. Current research points to an association between oral health and some of today’s most prevalent and deadly diseases namely cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, respiratory illness, and autoimmune disorders.

What if we now could slow down the destruction caused by chronic inflammation and impact not only oral health but systemic health? If we continue to choose to ignore we are at a standstill in our treatment progress resulting in further destruction and unpredictable outcomes. Sound familiar?

Science and research by leading authorities presents a call to action for dental professionals to challenge our thinking. We have the ability to change lives through the power of our message and the science of our treatment. It’s time to put our words into action and recognize our role in reducing inflammation and sustaining overall health for our dental patients.

The Team Approach to a Successful Energized Dental PracticeSaturday, June 11th — 1:00 PM — 4:00 PM 3 CEC points — Category II BDescription of CourseIn our changing economy, here’s what’s certain; a smart, experienced team, a focus on quality care and excellence and an ability to powerfully communicate.

A well-orchestrated dental practice built upon strong systems and excellent team communication recognizing that the dental hygiene department is a huge contributor to overall practice success. Do your patients truly value their dental hygiene appointments or do they view as ‘just a cleaning’. Do you seem to be attracting new patients however not seeing the results in growth of the practice? Have you ever heard “I only want what my insurance covers”? Unfortunately, all too often. The general public often view the dental hygiene appointment as a “feel good”, non-essential health service rather than a critical contributor of overall wellness.

Discover how to create value both in communication and services that will raise the bar and attain loyalty from your patients. Learn how to optimize the opportunities and minimize the last minute cancellations and other challenges that are undermining the success of your practice.
