Julie Abadullah grew up in La Costa/Encinitas until she

moved away to go to college. Now, after 30-plus years, she’s moved back!! She learned about our Newcomers Club through our website. Julie lives on Tradewinds Drive in Carlsbad, and she’s got lots of interest in NC activities: She enjoys beach walking, vol-unteering and Community Service, plus Julie would like to investi-gate Monday & Tuesday Book Club, Dining-in and Happy Hour. Movie Goers, Mah Jongg and Pickleball players should give her a call. And when you get together, ask her about meeting Jennifer Hudson. Or, stories about Max, her golden retriever.

Marla (with an “L”) Benik recently moved to

Cardiff and joined Newcomers in August. In 2012 Marla began teaching part time at the main campus of the Uni-versity of Hawaii in Manoa Valley and continued until March 2020. She teaches English as a second language to incoming international students; however, she has also taught diversity, intercultural adjustment training, and has supervised student exchanges. Marla and Mike share a passion for different cultures, which stems from spending two years in the Peace Corps as teachers in West Africa. (1980-1982) With five grown children geo-graphically scattered and elderly parents, Marla and Mike were back-and-forth between Hawaii and Florida or California for the past eight years. COVID-19 brought them to live in Cardiff, nearer Mike’s 90-year-old parents living in San Marcos. You’ll discover Marla is open-minded, purposeful and super curious. She’s especially interested in learning to play pickleball and canasta, has a willingness to explore book clubs, assist with communi-ty service, enjoy beach walks – plus she’s a movie-goer with an affection for Happy Hour.

Another month has gone by- another month closer to getting back to our old lives. Whether it’s a year from now or even more, with a cure or a vaccine, we have to think positively that the day will come! In the meantime, with all the talented members in this club, the future is look-ing bright for some meaningful and enjoyable activities, including per-son to person and others via Zoom. The results are in! Thanks to all of you who participated in our recent survey, our callers, our responders, and Melissa Lee who made it hap-pen. Check the newsletter for the stats but rest assured, we are listen-ing to you! We are gratified to know our calls were appreciated and we hope to keep you involved and interested by bringing your ideas to frui-tion. You are overwhelmingly calling for some in- person activities so those are being planned. While life is not exactly a walk in the park right now, that is one of our plans- to have small get-togethers in parks, back yards or other open spaces where we can congregate and still practice social distancing. At the same time we will be asking you to bring a bag of nonperishable food items which we will distribute to the CRC or another food bank. Two birds with one stone, we get to actually see each other and help those who are in need. Thanks to all of you who give tirelessly to this club and its members. It is your contribution of ideas, your creativity, your caring, that makes us a strong and viable organization. There is no doubt that this combina-tion of ideas and can-do attitudes will see us through this battle with a virus!

On October 13th Ann Stahl, our leader, has chosen a new book that is another important read, of interest to all, called Caste by Isabel Wilkerson. She will have a hard copy to pass around and it should also be available in September and October from your library. Here's a teaser and reason to read! The Pulitzer Prize–winning, bestselling author of The Warmth of Other Suns examines the unspoken caste system that has shaped America and shows how our lives today are still defined by a hierarchy of human divisions. “[Caste] should be at the top of every American’s reading list.”—Chicago Tribune All readers are welcome, if you’ve read the book or not - you may be inspired to read it! Brown Bag Lunch Picnics in the Park When: October 20 and November 17 Where: the host will decide the venue-(park, yard, beach) Who: Club members who are interested in a socially distanced get together

What: Bring a bag lunch and a bag of nonperishable food items to be donated to the CRC This is a win-win for all of us. As a result of the survey we found so many of us would enjoy a safe so-cial gathering while helping those less fortunate. So let's come together, outdoors with masks and so-cial distancing, and share some actual face time! Groups will be limited to 10 or less. If you are willing to attend and/or host, please email Betsy Buckner ([email protected]) or Kathy Bratcher ([email protected]) with 1) your name, 2) your zip code and 3) your desired position as host or attendee. Hosts may change the date to another day that week.

Golf: Thursday mornings Golfers play every Thursday AM at the Lomas Santa Fe Executive Course (1580 Sun Valley Rd, Solana Beach, CA 92075). We have two tee times reserved around 9am, so can accommodate 8 players. Each week please email Ann Welton ([email protected]) by Tuesday PM if you plan to play that week. This should be a firm commitment to play. Golfers of all abilities are invited to play. Because of the COVID-19 situation you must abide by all golf course restrictions. We play wearing masks most of the time (exceptions being if the mask interferes with your taking a stroke or you take a short break and are far from other players) and we carefully social distance. General Info: Barbara Batha ([email protected] or 858-847-0096) or Carol German ([email protected] or 858-356-9691) or Ann Welton([email protected] or 858-509-7553

Lunch Bunch: Nothing in October. Next lunch, Wed, Nov 4, 12:30 pm

" Lunch Bunch" is meeting every other month at present from September to June on the first Wednesday of the month. We meet at a local restaurant with outdoor seating, maybe even with an ocean view. We may also meet at a members home, in an outdoor space on occasion. With COVID 19, we wear masks until seat-ed, and practice social distancing while dining. This group is intended to be small to allow for making more personal, yet safe, connections with others. If you are interested, or want more information, please con-tact

Mona Angel [email protected].

Mah Jongg: Many of us are logging into www.realmahjongg.com to play alone against the computer or with others. This works well on a tablet or desktop and simulates a live game well. It’s free for the first two weeks, $5.99 a month after that and easy to cancel. If you use the option “looking for players” mavens from all over may join you for a game or two or you can set up a game with friends or look for other Newcomers playing and join them. IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL MEMBERS! If you want your Real Mahjongg ID added to our Newcomer list, please send me your real mah jongg name and your ID. I hope to send a completed list to our Real Mahjongg players. We hope to make new members feel welcome and encourage everyone to form a group, join a group, or substitute. Please indicate if you prefer a slow, moderate or fast game. Thanks, Mari Siegel [email protected]

Note: Steve is a fellow Rotarian of mine at the La Jolla Sunrise Rotary Club Note September’s events:

Impressions of Cuba: Thursday, Sep 10, 10:30A ( No change) Photos and conversation based on a recent trip by Isabel and Roger Escalle. Log in the same as you have been doing for our Newcomer Zoom activities: Meeting ID 909 709 5225 Password 261110

CHANGE: An Interactive (Cuban) Cooking Experience : Thursday, Sep 17, 10:30A Sandra, owner and chef of Havana Grill, is not available for the presentation, but her sister Isabel, (our New-comer member) is delighted to be presenting. The dish will still be Fricasé de Pollo (traditional Cuban chick-en stew or fricassee) with Cuban white rice. She is also adding a bean dish. There is no longer a registration fee. ( originally it was a $5.00 donation for Solutions For Change.) Instead of registering on Evite, please con-tact Isabel directly for the ingredients you'll need for the recipes. [email protected] Perhaps in the future we can be joined by Sandra. Moderated Discussion: Thursday, Sep 24, 10:30A The moderated discussion will center around the film The Cuban (see below), views on how society cares for the elderly, the process of aging, and the role of music and the arts in brain stimulation.

Recommended: Watch the Canadian independent film ‘The Cuban’ (2019, 109 minutes) in which Cuban jazz sparks a life-changing bond between a nursing home patient, Luis Garcia, who is suffering from vascular de-mentia and the beginnings of Alzheimer’s. Luis is portrayed by Louis Gossett Jr. (Sgt. Foley in An Officer and a Gentleman, 1982). Until a new caretaker arrives, Luis' accomplished past goes unrecog-nized by the people around him, and at its haunting best the movie suggests a multitude of unknown lives and experiences among the warehoused elderly. The film was scripted by Alessandra Piccione and directed by Sergio Navarretta. The cast includes Ana Golja as Mina and Kris (Giacomo Gianniotti, of Grey’s Anatomy).

The film can be streamed, $12 here (Angelika Film Center and Café). Once purchased you have 3 days to watch it.
