122 A.D : Roman emperor Hadrian build Pons Aelius

1080 : The new castle was built by Robert Curthose, eldest son of William the conqueror

1174 : The Scots king William the Lion was imprisoned in Newcastle

13th century : Newcastle developed as a merchant and trading community

1400 : Newcastle is made a county in its own right

1600 : The population of Newcastle stood around 10,000.

1650 : About 400,000 tons of coal are exported from new castle every year.

From the late seventeenth century the town became a regional centre

1711 : The first new paper published in the north of England

19th century : Outbreaks of cholera

1891 : The population of Newcastle-upon-Tyne was around 186,300.

1892 : Newcastle United Football Club was founded.

It has a good nightlife, a strong reputation as a poetry center, many theatres and so on
