1080 : The new castle was built by Robert Curthose, eldest son of William the conqueror
1174 : The Scots king William the Lion was imprisoned in Newcastle
13th century : Newcastle developed as a merchant and trading community
1400 : Newcastle is made a county in its own right
1600 : The population of Newcastle stood around 10,000.
1650 : About 400,000 tons of coal are exported from new castle every year.
