THE MIKADO - OPERA UNWRAPPED Friday 17 June 2016, 1pm
This glimpse behind the scenes of Scottish Opera’s productions is aimed at Year 6 & 7 students. Hear the orchestra, singers and backstage crew introducing the plot, characters and music of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado. Find out what an opera is, what makes it unique, and discover some secrets from behind the scenes. See how the costumes, sets, props, lighting, singers and orchestra come together to create an opera live on stage.

OPERA NORTH JENUFA & WORKSHOPWednesday 4 November 2015, 4.30-5.30pmTheatre Royal Studio
Set in a Moravian village, Jenůfa, an intense story of love, jealousy and sacrifi ce, is by turns harrowing, heart-wrenching and starkly tragic. In this one hour workshop, students are invited to question and advise the characters before watching the opera itself.

WELCOME Welcome to the autumn 2015 / spring 2016 edition of the schools newsletter which includes information on the fantastic workshops and exclusive discounts we offer to make your school visit to the Theatre Royal an occasion to remember. We have some superb educational productions coming to the Theatre Royal this season, highlights include the Olivier award nominated adaptation of Jacqueline Wilson’s Hetty Feather which comes to Newcastle direct from a sold out West end season. Don’t miss the epic thriller An Inspector Calls when it returns to the Theatre in spring 2016, sure to be a sell-out, so make sure you book seats early. As well as the winner of Best New Play 2015 at the Olivier Awards King Charles III (pictured), Mike Bartlett’s critically acclaimed new future history play explores the people underneath the crowns, the unwritten rules of our democracy, and the conscience of Britain’s most famous family.

William Golding’s 20th century classic Lord of the Flies explodes onto the stage in a remarkable production direct from London’s award-winning Regent’s Park Theatre. When a group of schoolboys survive a catastrophic plane crash, what starts as a desert island adventure quickly descends into a struggle for survival in a darkly sinister world of superstition and immorality.

Presented by Northern Ballet, this adorable new ballet has been specially adapted for children and is based on the classic Grimm Fairy Tale. With an original score, composed by Philip Feeney, The Elves and The Shoemaker follows the fantastic sell-out success of Ugly Duckling and Three Little Pigs by Northern Ballet. This is the perfect introduction to ballet for your school group.

RAMBERT DANCE COMPANYTues 2 – Thu 4 February 2016
Love, desire and betrayal are the ingredients of the shocking true story which inspired Picasso’s masterpiece, The Three Dancers. Now Rambert springs Picasso’s painting from the canvas to the stage, bringing to life his famous Cubist imagery and the themes of ecstasy and doom that fi ll his work. The 3 Dancers is part of a triple bill of dance for Newcastle.

AN AUDIENCE WITH JACQUELINE WILSON Thursday 8 October, 5pm
Dame Jacqueline Wilson will be visiting Newcastle for a wonderful event in which she will talk about her bestselling books and characters, from Tracy Beaker to Hetty Feather. She will share her thoughts about the Hetty Feather play and introduce her new Hetty Feather novel Little Stars.
8th October is publication day for Little Stars, so this is your chance to be one of the very fi rst to get your hands on a copy. There will even be the opportunity for a few lucky attendees to win a chance to meet Jacqueline Wilson herself!

THEATRE DAYSOur Theatre Days offer students the opportunity to visit the theatre and participate in 3 workshop sessions. Sessions can be drama or performance based, tailored to your specifi c requirements, or can focus upon backstage elements, for example stage make-up, lighting, sound, set design or costume design.
Session Duration: 9.30am - 3.pmCost: £520 (max. 20 participants)
PROJECT – AProject A is a one year actor training programme led by an Artistic Director and supported by leading industry specialists. Delivered from Newcastle Theatre Royal over an academic year (3 terms) participants will gain professional standard actor training, culminating in a production term to be performed in the Theatre Royal Studioand toured locally. Applications arewelcomed from those who will be aged 18 in September.

TOURSWe offer private tours throughout the academic year to school groups. Our tours are led by one of our dedicated tour guides and allow participants to explore backstage and experience the splendour of our fully restored 19th century Matcham auditorium.
Session Duration: 90 minutesCost: £60 (max. 25 participants)
WORKSHOPSWe offer a bespoke workshop service, devising and delivering workshops to aid classroom delivery and compliment curriculum demands. We offer sessions that cover all aspects of primary age demands and Drama GCSE and A Level qualifi cations. We also provide work for all levels of Performing Arts BTEC awards. Sessions are delivered in our dedicated Learning Space or alternatively we can visit your setting.
