One of the greatest musicals of all time returns to the stage in a magnificent new production.

Based on Baroness Maria von Trapp’s 1949 autobiography, this wonderfully lavish new staging of The Sound Of Music tells the true story of the world-famous singing family, from their romantic beginnings and search for happiness, to their thrilling escape to freedom as their beloved Austria becomes part of the Third Reich at the start of WWll.

Playing the iconic role of Maria von Trapp is Danielle Hope, who won BBC Television’s Over the Rainbow and starred as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz at the London Palladium. Playing Captain von Trapp is Steven Houghton, best known for his role in London’s Burning as well as a Top Ten single, Wind Beneath My Wings.

Featuring the classic songs Edelwiess, My Favourite Things, DO-RE-MI, Climb Ev’ry Mountain, The Sound of Music and many more.

Jesus Christ Superstar exploded onto the musical scene in 1971 – stunning audiences and changing the face of musical theatre forever. As compelling today as it was at its inception over forty years ago, Jesus Christ Superstar has some of musical theatre’s most legendary songs including I Don’t Know How to Love Him, Everything’s Alright, and Gethsemane through to, of course, Superstar.

Leading performer Glenn Carter returns as Jesus, a role he has played in the West End, on Broadway and on film. Musical theatre star Tim Rogers, whose theatre credits include Carousel,

Whistle Down the Wind, and the title role in Jekyll & Hyde at the Union Theatre, plays Judas Iscariot, while X Factor finalist Rachel Adedeji stars as Mary Magdalene direct from the UK and European tour of Thriller Live.

Produced by Bill Kenwright and the creative team behind numerous blockbuster musicals, Jesus Christ Superstar tells the world’s oldest story with the superb theatricality they have brought to Evita, Joseph, Cabaret, Blood Brothers, Whistle Down the Wind, Starlight Express and many more.

Following a sold-out run at the Almeida and in the West End, Mike Bartlett’s critically acclaimed new future history play King Charles III comes to Newcastle.

The Queen is dead: after a lifetime of waiting, the prince ascends the throne. A future of power. But how to rule?

Directed by the Almeida Theatre’s artistic director Rupert Goold, this ‘bracingly

provocative and outrageously entertaining new play’ (The Independent) explores the people underneath the crowns, the unwritten rules of our democracy, and the conscience of Britain’s most famous family.

Despite protests of innocence, Andy Dufresne is handed a double life sentence for the brutal murder of his wife and her lover...

Incarcerated at the notorious Shawshank facility, he quickly learns that no one can survive alone. Andy strikes up an unlikely friendship with the prison fixer Red, and things take a slight turn for the better. However, when Warden Stammas decides to bully Andy into subservience and

exploit his talents for accountancy, a desperate plan is quietly hatched. Widely considered the nation’s favourite movie starring Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman, Stephen King’s classic story takes to the stage in a new production which examines desperation, injustice, friendship and hope behind the claustrophobic bars of a maximum security penitentiary.

STAR CASTING TO BE ANNOUNCED.

Fresh from their sell-out hit shows Midnight Tango and Dance ’Til Dawn, Strictly superstars Vincent Simone & Flavia Cacace have created their most moving production yet as they prepare to dance in their final ever theatre tour.

Twenty years of dancing together has seen them become Strictly Come Dancing favourites, World Dance title-holders, create and star in

their own West End productions – but now it is finally time for the nation’s best loved Argentine Tango Champions to say goodbye to the stage in a thrilling, new, live performance.

Don’t miss your last chance to see this beautiful couple do what they do best live, in an intimate, passionate and explosive experience – it’s time for The Last Tango.

‘TERRIFIC DANCERS, IRRESISTIBLE ENTHUSIASM

AND GLORIOUS PERFORMANCES’ SUNDAY EXPRESS

Love, desire and betrayal are the ingredients of the shocking true story which inspired a masterpiece by Picasso. Now Rambert springs the painting from the canvas to the stage, bringing to life Picasso’s famous Cubist imagery and the themes of ecstasy and doom that fill his work. Choreographed by Didy Veldman, with orchestral music by leading Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin, The 3 Dancers is part of a triple bill of dance for Newcastle.

The Strange Charm of Mother Nature, created by Rambert’s Artistic Director Mark Baldwin, is inspired by the science of the cosmos. To music including Stravinsky and JS Bach, dancers fizz

with the energy of the miniscule building blocks that created life, the universe and everything.

The programme is completed by Frames, an inventive and visually arresting piece by British dance’s hottest property, Alexander Whitley. 12 performers skilfully manipulate 70 interlocking metal bars, forming shapes, structures and spaces which, quite literally, frame their dancing in a different light.

This is a programme full of gripping drama, world-class dancing and live music throughout. It is Britain’s national dance company at its most captivating.

From Stephen Daldry, the Oscar nominated Director of The Reader, The Hours and Billy Elliot, comes the multi award-winning West End production of J.B. Priestley’s classic thriller, An Inspector Calls.

Hailed as the theatrical event of our generation winning more awards than any other play in history, this landmark production from the National Theatre has thrilled audiences in the West End, on Broadway and throughout the world with its epic

and wildly imaginative staging, raw emotion, evocative score, lashing rain and chilling suspense.

When Inspector Goole arrives unexpectedly at the prosperous Birling family home, their peaceful dinner party is shattered by his investigations into the death of a young woman. His startling revelations shake the very foundations of their lives and challenge us all to examine our consciences.

These amusing and compelling plays span the globe from Moscow to London. With forgery, fraud and hilarious blunders, Single Spies gives us a glimpse into a life full of espionage, secret identities and even an interrogation by the Queen.

Since its premiere in 2012 Matthew Bourne’s dazzling production of Sleeping Beauty has won the hearts of thousands and smashed box office records across the UK and the USA since its premiere.

Matthew Bourne’s haunting scenario is a gothic romance for all ages; the traditional tale of good versus evil and rebirth is turned upside-down, creating a supernatural love story that even the passage of time itself cannot hinder.

Featuring spectacular designs by Olivier Award winners Lez Brotherston (set and costumes) and Paule Constable (lighting). The sound design by Paul Groothuis takes the audience into the heart of Tchaikovsky’s magnificent score in specially recorded surround sound.

Don’t miss this chance to experience a new classic in New Adventures’ growing repertoire - it might just be another 100 years before Sleeping Beauty re-awakens.

When The James Plays premiered in autumn 2014, the critical and public impact was extraordinary. Described by The Telegraph as ‘better than Shakespeare’ they sold out their run at the Edinburgh International Festival and the National Theatre of Great Britain in London, causing a storm of attention, and thrilling audiences. Now returning for a high-profile UK and international tour, these plays represent theatre-making at its very best.

Exhilarating and vividly imagined, The James Plays bring to life three generations of Stewart kings who ruled Scotland from 1406 -1488.

James I: The Key Will Keep The Lock A prisoner for 18 years, James is delivered back to his homeland to reign as James I of Scotland. Returning to a troubled nation, he faces terrible choices if he is to save himself, his Queen and the crown.

James II: Day of the Innocents The young James II is a puppet in a vicious game between Scotland’s most powerful families. As he approaches adulthood, James must fight for his crown and confront the nightmares of his childhood.

James III: The True Mirror Charismatic, cultured, and grandiose, James III is loved and loathed alike. Scotland’s future may lie with his resourceful and resilient wife, Margaret of Denmark. Can she rescue a struggling nation?

On stage seating At each performance there are a limited number of on stage seats available. These seats, built into the set in the style of choir stalls, are at the heart of the action. Facing out to the rest of the auditorium, they form a people’s parliament overlooking the court of the Kings.

The team behind 2013’s smash hit The Pirates of Penzance returns with another Gilbert & Sullivan comedy classic. A stellar cast, in the hands of director Martin Lloyd-Evans, brings the fun to life with a delicious mix of cheeky English Music Hall and exquisite Japanese tradition.

The Mikado has decreed that flirting should be punishable by death. But when his son Nanki-Poo falls for the beautiful Yum-Yum,

it looks like someone might be heading for the executioner’s block…

Packed with anti-Establishment silliness, and full of larger than life characters including self serving politicians that are all too recognisable today, this playful show features some of G&S’s most popular tunes, including Three little maids, Tit-willow and I’ve got a little list.

Superseats Stalls row F and G, for a small premium. Lots of extra legroom... think business class!

Babies and children For certain shows children aged two and under are welcome, on purchase of a £2 Babes in Arms ticket, and must share a seat with you (Babes in Arms tickets are not available for the Amphitheatre and Gallery as the distance from the stage and nature of these areas of the auditorium make it an inappropriate place to have small children). Children aged three and over must have a full paid for ticket. For all other performances, we regret children under three are not admitted to the auditorium.

Should the babe in arms become restless and cause a disturbance, the parent/guardian will be requested to leave the auditorium with the child. We reserve the right to not re-admit. Baby changing facilities are available in the stalls basement accessible toilet.

Booster cushions are available for small children to have a better view.

Heritage Fund Ticket prices include a contribution to our Heritage Fund which pays for the restoration and upkeep of the theatre. For further information check www.theatreroyal.co.uk/about-us/the-restorationLatecomers Latecomers will only be admitted at a suitable break in the performance.

Smoking and the use of e-cigarettes is prohibited throughout the Theatre Royal.
