FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear parents and caregivers,
Today we held our ‘in school’ end of year concert for 2020. While it is disappointing that
we could not hold our concert as originally planned, the students put in great energy,
were in their full costumes and the event went extremely well.
As with all whole school events, there are many peoples’ efforts that contribute to it being
a successful experience: a special thank you is extended to Sarah Fewster for working
with each class with their preparation throughout the year and to Jessica Pitcher for
supporting our SRC throughout the year to conduct our assemblies and special events.
2020 End of Year Reports
Your child’s end of year report which details their achievement against the Australian
Curriculum will be sent home on Thursday the 10th of December. If you have any queries
about the information provided in the report, please contact your child’s class teacher
to discuss.
Staffing News
In 2020, we are fortunate enough to have our entire classroom teaching staff
returning. This is an extremely positive step forward for our school and will provide a more
consistent start to 2020.
Andi Zerk has done numerous relief days for us throughout the year and at short notice
took on a role in teaching PE for the second half of this year.
Andi is a very valued member of our school community and I would like to thank her for
her hard work and contribution to our school. I’m sure we will be seeing her within our
school next year and beyond in different capacities.
I would like to pass on my thanks to the entire Newbery Park school community. This year
has proven to be a challenging year for all and being the principal at Newbery Park is a
fantastic privilege and the opportunity that I have to work with students, families and staff
is something that I greatly value.
I would also like to acknowledge our staff, teachers and SSOs, for their hard work and
tireless efforts throughout the year. We have an outstanding staff team here who support
each other, families and students on a daily basis and go above and beyond.
With one week to go, on behalf of all staff, we hope everyone has an enjoyable and safe
Christmas and holiday break.

Congratulations
Dear Families,
Students should keep reading for at least 10 minutes a day over the school holidays to set themselves
up for a great start to the new school year. It will keep their brains active, develop overall reading
skills and their love of reading. To help families keep their reading momentum rolling over the holidays,
Scholastic are releasing some resources at the end of term, including
Fun competitions & reading challenges
Reading games for car trips
Author & illustrator tutorials
Book recommendations
Extra special book sales & promotions

Happy summer reading!
Congratulations Josh Bennier – Recipient of our 2020 Environmentalist of the Year Award! “It is with the Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo project that Josh has really stood out. He has been an eager participant on seed collection and seed planting excursions, and has retained huge amounts of information from Bronwyn about the Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo. He has a long history exploring and working in our school garden. No job is too big or too small, and he will tackle any task. He is also a budding “Masterchef” on Wednesday’s, which is cooking day in the garden!”
Congratulations Becky Davis – Recipient of our 2020 Excellence in Music Award! “This award goes to a student who consistently demonstrates a commitment to learning music, and who has developed outstanding technical skill and musical knowledge. Becky is a reflective learner who identifies and solves problems when she plays, and is always dedicated to practicing regularly. She is a valued member of the musical team and is always cooperative, responsible and reliable.”

Room 6 Cooking!
For most of this year I have had the pleasure of working in Room 6 every
Friday. Luckily for me, we decided to try out some cooking, nothing too hard,
using produce from the garden and so it began. The students have embraced
cooking and over the last few months their skills, creativity and confidence
have grown. They have learnt about food safety, knife safety, grating,
chopping, and various cooking techniques. The cleaning up of the work area is
not popular but they all put in to help with minimal complaining.
Last week I demonstrated marshmallows while the students cooked cheesy
herb scones, pumpkin scones and fruit rolls.
Thanks Room 6 for making my Friday’s fun - By Ang

Earlier this term we celebrated the culture, history and achievements of our Indigenous people as part of National NAIDOC Week celebrations which ran from 8-15th of November. NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July (postponed this year due to Covid 19) to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
NAIDOC Week is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life in the spirit of reconciliation and support. NAIDOC Week presents a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support the process of reconciliation. We had a fabulous and fun NAIDOC week this year at Newbery Park which was jam packed for the students.
Classes had an opportunity to cook and eat a different variety of dampers that were cooked with different cooking methods. These included; Vegemite and cheese damper, cheese and chive, pizza and wattle seed damper. It was a mixed reaction with each child but we managed to successfully not burn any of them!
On the Thursday Newbery Park welcomed Uncle Doug Nicholls, a local Aboriginal Elder from Teeluk (Kingston) to Newbery Park. Doug worked with each class discussing topics such as the locally developed six season’s calendar, plant and water sustainability, native animal furs; he displayed and described a range of artefacts, played musical instruments and gave the kids an opportunity to make fire with the traditional indigenous tools. At the end of the session came the highlight for most of the children as they had a chance to test their and throw a boomerang, it was a little windy but majority of the children had a successful throw and no injuries!

fruit Salad
Wow…it is hard to believe
that it is nearly the end of the
year! In room 1 we have been
doing many exciting things. In
Design and Technology, we
have been looking at how
food is grown and where it
comes from. We designed our
own our own fruit salads and
then had a fantastic time
making them ourselves. They
tasted so good!

Over the last five
Wednesdays we have had 13
kindy kids have their
transition visits to school. We
had lots of fun together as we
did many different activities
and got used to the routines
at school. Some of the
exciting things we did were:
singing songs, playing games,
reading with ‘big buddies’,
create some art, reading
stories and helping Ange in
the garden! We look forward
to when they join us full time
next year as brand new
Foundation students!

STARFISH
This term in Starfish we have been
using community and real-world
activities to inform our literacy and
communication learning. We have
focused on our writing and
communication skills through the
examination and creation of
procedural texts.
On each Monday our group has the
job of feeding the chooks and we
wondered what would happen if we
weren’t here or the job needed to be
done by someone else next year. So
we have begun to create a book
detailing the equipment and procedure
for the important job of feeding the
chooks. Together we brainstormed
what was needed and communicated
the steps involved. We also began
creating supportive illustrations and
are working to include photos in our
texts.
Everyone has been able to contribute
to the book using their own level of
literacy skills and we look forward to
its completion.

Sustainability Project 2020
This year we have had a small group of volunteers and students working throughout lunchtime sessions on a ‘small’ sustainability project.
Throughout the year we have collected donations of materials and other sewing materials which we have been repurposing into reusable material shopping bags. Students have worked through each step of the process - guided and taught by Emelia Tidy, Brooke Parry and Jay Watson - including cutting the material using patterns, pinning, ironing and finally sewing!
Next week we will be delivering our first load of shopping bags to Fosters Foodland where members of our Millicent community will be given some reusable bags instead of plastic bags - saving the environment, one reusable shopping bag at a time!
Next year we will again be running our Sustainability Project, and will be on the lookout for more community members to volunteer their time and join us during lunchtimes to support our students in sewing more bags. Also, any donations of materials and sewing equipment are always greatly appreciated!
If you have any queries, please feel free to contact Jess Herrewyn or the front office.
Keep your eyes peeled for our bags as they begin to appear in the Millicent community!
