The Golden Gathering Scholarship fund established at the Newberg Education Foundation has awarded $1000 Scholarships for continuing education to 17 Newberg High School graduates since 2008.

Tax deductible donations by members of the Golden Gathering link the past history of Newberg High with the future. The scholarships have contributed to an amiable relationship between the NHS student body and faculty with NHS golden alumni in support of the Newberg High School mission.

Sandy Byers, NHS College and Career Coordinator, oversees eligibility and selection of candidates for the GG—NEF Scholarships from which the GG Scholarship Committee makes the final selection. This year there were 16 applications. The presentation of the Golden Gathering scholarship has been updated so that applicants are more aware of the criteria. It is posted on Instagram and other media outlets that give a wider readership to students. In discussions with Ms. Byers it has been clarified that the scholarships not only apply to college tuition but also trade continuing education.

Brad Mills, on the right presents a check for $777.77 in behalf of the Class of ‘57 to Heath Cornich, payable

to the Golden Gathering/NEF Scholarship Fund.

GG Scholarship Fund links past history of golden alumni with present and future Newberg High student body By Jm Marnach, ‘55 Scholarship Committee Chairman

Continued donations and growth of the GG-NEF Scholarship Fund will open the door for expansion of awards and the perpetuity of scholarships to NHS graduates by the Golden Gathering.

The working relationship with the Newberg Education Foundation has been informal, and while successful is mostly based on the memory of oral agreements between representatives of the GG and NEF dating back to 2007. To preserve these agreements and insure the GG donations in the NEF-GG fund continue to be available for NHS Scholarships, it has been recommended that the oral agreements be formalized in a Memorandum of Understanding. Our desire to do this has been informally discussed with a representative of the NEF. A MOU has been drafted and is pending review by a CPA or attorney.

I’m pleased to report that $2,152.77 was contributed this year, with the Class of ’57 donating $777.77 bringing the total in the GG “directed donations” account at the NEF to $58,725.95 as of August 31, 2018.

At the GG planning meeting in June, the feasibility of increasing the two scholarships from $1000 to $1500 each was discussed with the funds professional financial advisor, Heath Cornick of Edward Jones. He suggested the annual withdrawal rate should be around 4% so it was recommended that the withdrawal increase not be initiated until the fund reaches $75,000. Mr. Cornick also reported that the return on investment of the NEF—GG “directed donation” fund for the preceding year was 12.69%.

“One of a kind,” Coach Marv Heater honored

A standing ovation greeted Marv Heater, class of ’47 as he was honored by the Salem-Kaiser High School Booster Club October 6th with the Excellence and Leadership Through Athletics award. He was among six Salem residents to be awarded the first annual Beacon awards that raise funds for Salem athletics.

Marv played football at Newberg High and Linfield College before beginning his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Linfield. This was followed by coaching football at high schools, including Central High School where he was head football, wrestling and track coach. His football teams won three conference titles, culminating in winning the state football championship in 1960.

Over eleven years, beginning in 1961 as PE teacher and head football coach at South Salem High School his teams were Valley League champions five times. In 1971 the Saxons won their second state championship. Twelve of Coach Heater’s players earned Division I scholarships with one player going on to play professionally for the ‘49ers.

Heater’s coaching was described by a former player this way: “Coach Heater is one of a kind. He has influenced my life more than any other adult. His professionalism, integrity, and kindness makes him special to many. I love that man.”

Marv’s 1966 and 1971 football teams have been inducted into the South Salem Hi Hall of Fame. In 1972 Coach Heater moved into administration as athletic director at Sprague High School and assistant principal at South Salem. In 1979 he became the first principal at Mckay High School, retiring in 1986. He then served as executive director of the Oregon High School Coaches Association from 1987 until retirement in 2010.

Coach Heater has been married to his wife Jeanne for 66 years. They have four children , all of whom graduated from South Salem High School.

The story — I, Bob Tripp, (don’t call me class president anymore; Class Rep is just fine), checked with some 48ers

to discover that only about 7 attended the Golden Gathering per year in recent years. A number of reasons popped up, i.e. health, distance, too crowded, disinterest. So the bright idea popped into mind to have something ‘48erish at a nearby location at a time different from the Golden Gathering thereby not interfering with the big show. Classmates could attend both if we had a couple of hours together before the GG. Betty Anderson suggested 11 am.

Location — While in Newberg for a Girl’s Fast Pitch Tourney two years ago, a daughter and I discovered the perfect

place, Social Goods at 500 E First Street. We met and became friends with the owner, Robbin — one of the sweetest persons you will ever meet. They have a huge place with plenty of seating and room to roam. Sandwiches, too. Please Google socialgoods.com and see for yourself the wonderful things they do for the community of Newberg.

Problem Solved — We had a fantastic dozen or so of very happy ‘48ers and guests, Ken Austin included. Bob says, “any

class can do this. Call Robin.”

48ers find way to solve equation:[1948 + 70 = 2018] YIKES!

Bill McDonald started talking about number 70 a couple years ago and he never quit talking — so we needed to talk about this...

It was like Christmas at the 65th reunion of the Class of 1953. Ted and Sandy Bennett played the role of Santa providing fun gifts to each of the 48 attendees.

Janny VanFleet was surprised to be gifted Ted and Sandy’s dog Toby…well, almost! The charade was masterfully orchestrated by Ted with Toby on his leash ready for exchange.

A catered buffet dinner was enjoyed while master of ceremonies and organizer, Bill Killen welcomed classmates from Oregon, Colorado, Idaho and Washington to the Springbrook Estates Community Center August 11th on the eve of the Golden Gathering. Classmates that had passed away since the 60th reunion were remembered with brief eulogies.

Class of ‘5365th Anniversary Reunion

A picnic at Memorial Park in Newberg on Saturday August 11 was the scene of the 60th year reunion of the NUHS Class of 1958. Described as a BYOP (bring your own picnic) 34 classmates participated in the outdoor event, which was declared to be “the best ever” by Dale Jennings from Texas.

Golden Gathering members that attended Central School between 1949 and 1954 will remember that Jack Morton was a teacher and successor to Miss Rush as Principal. Subsequently, in 1955 Mr.

Morton became Dean of Students at Oregon College of Education until his retirement in 1981. Although over half a century

has past, he and his wife Mary remain in the memory of OCE alumni for their hospitality to local and faraway students. He is reported to had a “profound interest in virtually every student and found a way to help them be successful.”To commemorate his legacy,

his friends have initiated a fund raising campaign for a scholarship and the naming of the lobby in the planned OCE Welcome Center in his name. The goal of $!50,000 was almost reached in the six months since it commenced. To donate send check payable

to WOU Foundation, with a note that it’s for the Jack Morton Endowment, 345 Monmouth Ave N, Monmouth, OR 97361
