What is Naviance? Naviance is a web-based service designed to help assist a student with researching information on colleges, careers, high school classes, and effective communication. It allows students to collaborate with parents, teachers, and counselors to assist them with their future plans. In addition to communication with students, Naviance also allows teachers access to information on colleges and careers that can be integrated into the classroom curriculum.

How Does Naviance Work? Naviance is formatted into two different programs: 1. Naviance Succeed is the program in Naviance designed for teachers. This is the side where teachers can access the program and assist all students at their school. Teachers can find a student’s GPA, class rank, colleges and careers of interest, etc. 2. Naviance Family Connection is the program in Naviance designed for students and parents. It is in Family Connections that students will be able to research different colleges, careers, etc., and also complete assessments to assist in their pursuit of postsecondary decisions. Once they enter the information in their account, teachers and counselors can view these decisions and assist them with their decisions.

How Do Teachers Log into Naviance Succeed? To access a teacher’s account, go to https://succeed.naviance.com . A teacher will place their school name on the line that says “Account,” enter their first name and last name with a period between them under “User Name” (for example, Mike Gordon’s account would be mike.gordon), and password, which was sent to you by Sonia Torres (in an e-mail). Once the teacher has logged in the first time, they will be asked to change their password. If the teacher forgets their password, see a guidance counselor. The guidance counselor will reset the password and the teacher will receive a new temporary password on their school email account. If you need to change your password, go to Setup > My Account, click Change My Password.

Creating a Student Group in Naviance (Fig. 10-13) There are a lot of ways to use Naviance as a communication tool to be able to assist students. This can be helpful because it gives teachers and staff members a way to send a message to all students in a personalized format with the option of sending attachments. To create your list, go to the students button on the top ribbon on the home page. After that, there will be another black ribbon and you will want to click on groups. This will take you to a page that is shown in figure 10 below. It contains all the shared groups at your school. To make a new group, click on add new group on the left-hand side.

(Figure 10)

At this time, you will be allowed to enter a code to represent your student group and also create a group name. I would suggest when creating a name that has the teacher’s name, class/organization, and the year of the group. For example, Ms. Narang’s geometry class could be called NarangGeometry2013. This can distinguish her from all other teachers and subjects. Click Add Group when you are finished.

(Figure 11)

This will take you back to the student groups. To add new members, click on edit members.

(Figure 12)

Now you can add any student from your school to the group. Click the student names under the column on the left-hand side called Available Students, and press the add button. This will place the students in the column on the right-hand side called Current Group Members. Once you have entered all the students to your group, click Updated Membership at the bottom. This will successfully complete your student group.

There are a lot of options when sending an E-Mail to Students and Parents. Although you can choose students at your school by several categories (such as GPA, assigned counselor, etc.), the one you will probably use the most as a teacher is the student group. Write a message to the people you are sending this email to. Chose the First Name option from the codes on the right-hand side and click insert to bring the name into the document. Complete the rest of the letter and Save As Template. After this, choose the Student Group that you want to send this message to, double check to make sure you are sending the message to the right grade/classes (choose correct range to make sure you accommodate all of the students in your classes) for your student group. Finally, scroll to the bottom of the page and click Preview and Send.

The last page will give you a final opportunity to look at the message you are sending. In addition to this, there is an option where you can browse and attach any document up to 2 MB’s to the email. You will also see a list of the names in your student group and it will automatically default to choosing all of them, however, you can select or unselect any individuals you choose. Once you have completed the information, click Schedule Message at the bottom. This will successfully complete your email to a student or parent.

Student Family Connection Account in Naviance: A General Overview (Fig. 18-24) To clarify once again, Naviance Succeed is the administrative side of Naviance that teachers and counselors use. The part of Naviance that students and parents use is called Family Connection. Although teacher and counselors will probably not use all the functions, this section will help give an overall view about what students see on their Family Connection account and also where things are located. To get to the student’s individual Family Connections account from the teacher’s home page, click on students. On the student’s account, there will be a button for family connection on the left-hand side. This will take us to the student’s personal family connection page so we can help assist them in creating a resume.

4. Emails: Messages sent exclusively from NMHS teachers and counselors.

they want students and parents to be able to access in regards to procedures and information about their school.

6. Tabs at the top page. Each tab takes a student to a different area of Naviance

Family Connections. More detail will be given in figures 20-24 below
