JUNE 1, 2019

Dear friends:

“I am because we are, and because we are, I am”.

This Ubuntu proverb, aptly sums up my life's work and philosophy. As someone who has benefited greatly from international and domestic cross-cultural and cross-racial experiences, I appreciate the benefits of exploring new ways of being and doing. Consequently, I am an advocate for multicultural collaboration, because it brings everyone to the table, emphasizes common interests rather than differences, makes room for more effective communication among diverse groups, and enriches everyone’s life through shared knowledge of other cultures. It takes advantage of strength in numbers, because when groups are organized through common purpose, they can wield great power and succeed. This creates community, builds collective capacity to help make things better, and promotes necessary consensus. It offers excellent opportunities to solve complex problems in an atmosphere of trust, cooperation, and mutual respect, with the potential to build a more just society.

More than eighteen years of experience as a pastor within the United Methodist Church (UMC), leading diverse congregations, administering stewardship, reaching out within the community, and fostering cross-cultural/cross-racial relations. Committed to training and mentoring candidates for the ministry. Designated by UMC to assist congregations in resolving issues and advancing their goals. Consultant and goodwill ambassador to East Africa, promoting girls’ and women’s education and empowerment. Background in hospital and nursing home chaplaincy, high school teaching, motivational preaching, and autism spectrum disorders’ consulting.

I thank and praise God for my appointment at First United Methodist Church, Newark. It is my joy to be in ministry with the congregation, local, national and international community. Please join me in praying that the congregation and I will continue to be the Church that God wants us to be in a denomination that is at the crossroads of mission and ministry in the world. Let us continue to trust our Lord Jesus Christ who sends us to serve so that we can go forth to love God and others in words and deeds. May God by the power of the Holy Spirit continue to bless us in the name of Jesus so that together we can transform the world!

Prayerfully, Rev. Dr. Patience Kisakye

PASTOR YANG ’S RETIREMENT LUNCHEON

A Luncheon was held to celebrate Pastor Yang’s retirement. The food was wonderful and there was lots of it. It was wonderful to have some of Pastor Jay Yang’s congregation from Chapin UMC attending. And of course, having the Yang family in attendance to celebrate this milestone was very special.

A special “Thank You” to everyone who worked so hard in preparing this luncheon.

MESSAGE FROM SPPRC

Members of Newark FUMC,

Since Pastor Yang announced that she was going to retire at the end of June, we have been

praying that God would send us a strong spiritual leader to guide and assist us with our vision.

We have learned that our Bishop Mark Webb and his cabinet appointed

Rev. Dr. Patience Kisakye to Newark FUMC. Pastor Patience's appointment becomes official

at Annual Conference in June.

Pastor Patience Kisakye is a dynamic preacher with a deep desire to see people grow closer in

their relationship with their neighbors and with God through Jesus Christ.

Pastor Patience is currently serving Lyons, Palmyra, Port Gibson UM Churches and formerly at

Newark Emmanuel with extensive experience in worship planning, leadership development and

staff training. Prior to her pastorate in the Finger Lakes area, she served in Syracuse, New

Jersey, Virginia, Dallas and Chicago. Pastor Patience has plans to welcome her family that

relocated two weeks ago from Uganda to Colorado and then take some much needed vacation

time this summer to visit with her Dad who is in the evening of his years in Uganda. During her

vacation, arrangements are being made for us to have guest preachers that include our District

Lay Leader Shaeegh Haeeb and Lay Servant

Jeannie Young-Walczyk.

Over the next several months, you will have an opportunity to celebrate Pastor Patience

Kisakye's ministry, as well as express your appreciation and wish her well in her new ministry.

SPPRC will be coordinating welcoming opportunities for you to meet Pastor Patience in small

group settings as she begins her time as Pastor here.

Pastor Patience's first Sunday here will be July 7th. Please be in prayer for Pastor Patience and

our church.

Peace in Christ

Ronald Miller, SPPRC chair

NEWARK FOOD CLOSET

With summer vacation fast approaching and the kids will be

home, we need your help to stock these shelves!

The food closet is in need of donations. So far this year we have served 521 families compared to last year at this time we served 308 so with the in-crease we really need more help with donations to keep up with this high demand of families utilizing our program.
